MLK Street re-opens after garbage truck crash

ST. PETERSBURG -- St. Petersburg Police officers are re-opening Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street between Gandy Boulevard and 94th Avenue North.

Earlier today,a city garbage truck struck overhead power lines with its hydraulic lift in the up position, yanking power poles down onto the road, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department. The accident occurred near Executive Center Drive at 1:23 p.m., police said.

A live wire landed on an occupied vehicle, according to police, but the woman was safely removed from her car. No injuries have been reported.

At 3:15 p.m. police announced that north and southbound Martin Luther King Jr. St would be shut down for at least four hours. Rays fans should be able to travel the road as normal when the game ends.
