Public access station, Hillsborough settle suit
TAMPA -- A public access cable channel has settled a lawsuit with Hillsborough County commissioners, who voted last year to cut the station's funding.
Mediator Peter J. Grilli filed a report in federal court today saying the two sides had tentatively reached a settlement, subject to the approval of the County Commission and the board of directors for Speak Up Tampa Bay, the network that sued.
The public access station filed its complaint in federal court in October, after commissioners voted to eliminate the network's $335,000 budget on the recommendation of County Administrator Pat Bean.
The lawsuit accused commissioners of trying to censor the station's free speech. Terms of the settlement were not immediately available.
