Bucs release Boston
David Boston's tenure with the Bucs is over - and possibly his career.
The Bucs released Boston after reaching an injury settlement with the 29-year-old receiver, just six days after police determined that test results showed high levels of GHB in his system at the time of his DUI arrest Aug. 23.
The Bucs replaced by Boston by re-signing kick returner Mark Jones.
General Manager Bruce Allen said the Bucs will not attempt to re-sign Boston the way they brought him back after releasing him at the start of the 2006 season.
'''Yeah, I think we've moved on,'' Allen said. ""And we're hoping this group stays healthy and we move forward.''
Since his arrest last month, Boston had maintained he was not under the influence when police found him slumped over the steering wheel at a Pinellas Park intersection.
Two days after his arrest, Allen said there was no 'objective evidence' to support the charges. But all that changed last week when a unrinalysis revealed Boston had high levels of GHB in his system.

Maybe before Bruce Allen spoke he should have waited for the results.

Too bad. We don't need any more distractions on this team this year.
Posted by: Mike | September 12, 2007 at 11:50 AM
Gruden will find another trouble causing thug to bring in. Surely somebody around the league has done something to get thrown off a team. The other coaches must cut guys and give them Gruden's card.
Posted by: Tony | September 12, 2007 at 12:02 PM
Tony was probably one of the one's who said Gruden was going keep Boston and bring in more thugs. Everything that happens, good or bad, somebody always finds a way to spin a negative viewpoint at Gruden. If our next coach is bad it's going to be becuase he inherited Grudens team. If we have winning years with our next coach its going to be because Gruden couldnt coach. GET OVER IT PEOPLE. Please comment on the headline not what you think of Gruden.
Posted by: AL | September 12, 2007 at 12:09 PM
and by the way, Boston screwed himself.
Posted by: AL | September 12, 2007 at 12:10 PM
First Allen throws money away on Simms, now he throws money away on Boston. Allen could have easily have cut Bosotn before the season and not owe him a dime. If the results then came back clean, re-sign him. I doubt Boston would have gone anywhere else in the meantime. He didn't last year.
Posted by: Ted | September 12, 2007 at 12:17 PM
Another retread showing why no other teams want him. The underlying problem is that Gruden and Allens concept of "Team Building" is flawed. Trying to put together a collection of "cast offs" is not how to build a winner. Winning teams have historically built through the draft and a nucleus of key young players. Bill Cower will have his work cut out for him in 08
Posted by: | September 12, 2007 at 12:55 PM
ted, allen didnt throw money away on simms. he will turn out to be a good pro. be patient wait for this crap (gruden) to blow over (getting fired) and see what the next coach does with our qb's. the first thing he will do is let garcia and grad go. and declare simms the starter. he needs this year to get healthy again. his body and in his head. he will be back next year. and besides look at how our o-line played, we may need 4 qb's this year. boston only cost us like 500k. chump change considering how much money allen has saved by making decisions as stupid as the one to get rid of simeon.
Posted by: aaron | September 12, 2007 at 01:03 PM
Maybe Elijah Dukes can go back to playing football. He would fit right in with the Bucs. This team has become an embarrassment and it will stay that way until Allen is replaced with a real GM who has some decision making authority. Gruden is a good coach when he leaves the personnel responsibilities to someone else. People focus too much on Gruden vs. Dungy, but this team took a nosedive on and off the field when McKay left.
Posted by: TT | September 12, 2007 at 01:04 PM
i wish we could get cowher but i think the coaching shakedown will go like this:gruden to cleveland, cowher to carolina and charlie weis to Tampa. that would be great. good for the offense and good for simms. weis can develop simms like he did with brady. i am not comparing simms w/ brady, dont get me wrong. i just saying weis is good in helping out the strong armed qb's. unlike paul "the hack" hackett.
Posted by: aaron | September 12, 2007 at 01:07 PM
i loved dungy but man i am tired of hearing about him. he is a former coach who was great for us. but we fired himand he moved on, so should we. right now we have gruden and he is lousy. but we cant go back and say dungy this and dungy that. we need to think about the future, not the past. imagine when gruden gets canned. what a wonderful, bright sunny and pleasant day that will be. it will be like one of those covers on an old gospel album with the sun breaking through the clouds. think about all the optimism that will be spewing from these blogs.
Posted by: aaron | September 12, 2007 at 01:13 PM
Aaron - My comment about throwing money on Simms deals with the here and now. No one else was signing Simms so why rush out and give him $5 million? Simms could have been resigned for a lot less. Allen was bidding against himself and probably didn't have to bid at all. Simms would still be a free agent today if the Bucs didn't resign him. I'm hoping he's fine next year but he wouldn't make any other roster, he's on our roster only because we invested $5 million.
Posted by: Ted | September 12, 2007 at 01:14 PM
Sorry Al. Maybe there's a reason most are bashing Gruden. Is it really negative spin, or is there reality to it. Will let you sort it out.
Posted by: Richard | September 12, 2007 at 01:15 PM
i give allen credit on the fact we are under the cap. BUT his judging of talent as well as gruden is bad. Caddy, Clayton, Joseph, and others have been miss leading and flawed. Monte has finaley got a draft under hais belt and it looks so far to be good. Monte should be are next coach, he is the founder of the tampa 2 not Toney. give Monte the ROCK.
Posted by: mike | September 12, 2007 at 01:26 PM
GHB can easily be put into someone's drink without them knowing it. Sounds fishy to me.
Posted by: SH | September 12, 2007 at 01:28 PM
You Buc fans make me sick and this is why I HATE the Bucs, did I tell you I HATE the Bucs, I HATE the Bucs, but I’ll read ever story and blog, I’ll cry about the team losing and tell you Gruden is a crappy and Allen sucks as a GM , Brooks can’t tackle and Garcias over the hill. Let finish by saying GO BUCS
Posted by: DR | September 12, 2007 at 01:37 PM
i talking about here and now too ted, IT LOOKS LIKE WE NEED 4 QB'S! 5 million is nothing for 2 yrs. he didnt hurt the cap. we have all the room in the world. its not like he is taking a huge chunk of the cap.
Posted by: aaron | September 12, 2007 at 01:40 PM
caddy, clayton and joseph are not bad picks. they are good players, they just lack quality position coaches that can teach them and help them develop. the drafts havent been all that bad, the player development has been bad. allen is great with the cap but it ends there. we all know he is the $ man and gruden is the personell man. drafts have been okay but the free agent signings (other than cato) have been awful.
Posted by: aaron | September 12, 2007 at 01:44 PM
Is that you Tom blogging for me? I overslept last night, must have had too much GHB. It sucks that Boston got cut, he was my "in" for selling drugs to the team. Now what am I supposed to do?
Aaron, Simms hasn't earned a dime and never will be good. Did you watch him in college? And in the pro's? Geez, the kid is horrible. Daddy's joy ride is coming to an end.

Eat your Wheaties in the morning, then play ball. It's just soooo simple. Bears rule! Hike!
Posted by: SixthString | September 12, 2007 at 02:04 PM
No it’s not Tom, but the three of you are just too negative. Yeah we you don’t like Gruden or Allen but come on man. Every team has its problems, even the Pats allegedly stealing signals. Do you think there good enough to win 21 straight with out cheating? Not in this league. We maybe going threw a slump… well ok a good slump and yeah I may vent Sunday and maybe even Monday but I still am going to pull for the Bucs win or lose. Instead of always being acidity post something good, move Cato to the weak side in the nickel and rest Brooks …

the bear suck this year which you'll find out after losing the next few.with out Ted Cottrell the bears D won't stop anybody
Posted by: Tim | September 12, 2007 at 02:32 PM
I'm surprised that Bruce Allen caved in so quickly, maybe he's not as big of a scumbag as we think.
Posted by: Paul | September 12, 2007 at 02:49 PM
Its not negative to call out crap when you see it. C'mon man. Its really lose-lose situation this year. If the Bucs win, Gruden and Allen will stay- which is terrible. If the Bucs lose, well, losing sucks, but Gruden and Allen's reign of power is over. I'd have to favor the latter, only because even if the Bucs win enough games to make the playoffs, they have no shot to win a Super Bowl. They don't have the right guys and the guys that have the the talent to win have no respect for the terrible leader they have.
The Pats are cheats and Goodell better come down on them hard. They should make Belichick suit up as a clown the rest of the year.
Posted by: DR | September 12, 2007 at 03:03 PM
Ted, Is it possible that Bruce Allen and the Bucs knew Chris Simms can not sign with any other teams due to his injury, but still signed him the $5 mil sitting on the bench to recover. Giving away $5 mil is hard, but it is the right thing to do for someone that gave everything (including his life) to the team? Point is, unless your name is Allen or Glazers, nobody knows the reasons. So, have a positive outlook in life.
Posted by: KG | September 12, 2007 at 03:15 PM
DR
If the only way Gru and All are fired is if the Bucs post a losing record then why complain about the loses? Besides if there record is bad enough they get an elite talent. Either way Gruden is gone, but if we win then his picks are descent players and Gruden stays so really can we have it both ways?
Posted by: Tim | September 12, 2007 at 03:20 PM
If the 5 mil's not used or needed this year it's not lost
Posted by: Tim | September 12, 2007 at 03:22 PM
KG, what happened? Ever since you lost me, you lost your manhood. Remember Rice, when he signed a contract and The Adam's family wanted to renig on it even though they signed it and everybody hated Rice cause he was hurt? Wouldn't it be the right thing to do to have him heal and play again? He did help them win a Super Bowl, with his 12 sack average. What has Simms done to even deserve a contract? Losing record, terrible QB rating. Just because he lost his spleen doesn't mean he's a good player. No disrespect to Everett, but should he be inducted into the Hall of Fame because he was paralyzed? (I hope he recovers fully, and speedily) Its pretty obvious Simms is faking an injury to recover money he hasn't earned. He must have read Bettis' play book. He didn't tell the coach he was injured. Gruden won't put him on the IR and is waiting 'til he is healthy to cut him.
Posted by: KG's Castrated Nuts | September 12, 2007 at 03:26 PM
Tim, have you seen the players Gruden and Allen have drafted? I would rather have Rosie O'Donnell draft players than those two idiots.
Posted by: DR | September 12, 2007 at 03:28 PM
if Gruden and Allen are fired, then how can Gruden and Allen do the drafting?
Posted by: Tim | September 12, 2007 at 03:31 PM
I think what happen in Seattle could have been the best thing to happen to Tampa this early in the season. I see they brought other players who did a good job in pre-season. I think that Tampa Bay will have a great game against Saints. How about bringing Darby from Alabama onto the active roster. If Kelly is still injured put him on IRL and let the young corners and safety learn under fire. This was a great 2007 draft of players.
Posted by: George L Hicks | September 12, 2007 at 04:48 PM
Correct me if i'm wrong, but if you put Kelly on IR you'll lose him till week ten. If it's just a groin pull he maybe ready to go Sunday and I would rather see Jackson and Black learn from Kelly just like Gaines would've benefitted learning from Rice.
Posted by: Tim | September 12, 2007 at 05:36 PM
what an amazing bunch of bandwagon fans you all are. look at the NFC South... we are one game out and looked better than other 2 teams that lost... and we lost to the NFC favorite, opening day, on the west coast. reserve your judgement until at least after week 5, and if we are 2 and 3 then we have a great shot at the playoffs. go bucs!
Posted by: Bill | September 12, 2007 at 06:47 PM
Boston gone - good! One thug less.
Is Stevens still around? Not so good. One thug still here.
Posted by: Bro-Eli | September 12, 2007 at 06:52 PM
I'll tell you all something, after this year, this team better make some choices in the offseason. That means sign players who can help (especially wide receivers), cutting players (even Buc veterans), drafting the right players in next year's Draft, even getting a new GM who can make right choices, whatever it takes to get this team back to championship form. I'm damn glad they won a Super Bowl, but one is not enough. Some big changes need to take place next year.

Isaw that same post on the Bucs release David Boston story, be a little original, bears SUCK
Posted by: | September 12, 2007 at 09:16 PM
I think the distraction from the Bucs has been Bruce Allen and Jon Gruden. Is this the 3rd or the 4th time that they have picked up Mark Jones? If he was that good to return punts in this league, wouldnt someone else have picked him up the other times we cut him? C'mon Bruce, get your player personnel department to look for quality players, not recycled guys. Boston at least had a good camp and could have made a difference on this team.

DR: simms had a great college career. i dont know what planet you are from. he lit it up. so let me get this right, you hate the bucs and you hate texas, so you must be a panther fan and a sooner fan. #1 most yds in a game, #2,#3 yds in a season, #4 career yds, #2 passer efficiency, #2 qb victories, #2 career td's, #1 td's in a game, #1,#2 single season td's. the only knock on simms in college was he couldnt beat oklahoma. he was 3-0 vs. texas A&M though. so dr, your ? about did i see simms in college, yes i did. i dont think you did though.
Posted by: aaron | September 13, 2007 at 07:05 AM
simms has yet to really get on track here with the bucs, i agree. the year before last was a good year though. if we could just get our o-line to develop and improve their pass protection skills it would help in simms having a productive season. the play of the o-line affects how simms plays. the time lost due to injuries is a direct result of their ineptitude. he lost a spleen because they couldnt pass protect. could you imagine what we could do with a simms-galloway combo? when he gets his head/mechanics straight that combo will be lethal. that is where simms excells, the long ball. that is also where galloway excells. let us all hope our next coach can shore up our o-line and get simms back on the field for us.
Posted by: aaron | September 13, 2007 at 07:13 AM
I agree with aaron, put Manning or Brady behind our line and they wouldn’t be very effective either.
Posted by: Tim | September 13, 2007 at 09:16 AM
Tim, again, comparing Simms with Manning and Brady? I'd say put Frye, Plummer, or maybe Eli Manning behind the Buc line for a comparison. You guys get the tears out now, you will never see Simms play an NFL game again.
Aaron, you're too funny! A&M isn't a big challenge, Simms never won a big game in his life. His last name screwed Major Applewhite out of a great career. Simms lost every big game in his college career. Who cares if he had the most yards against the Little Sisters of the Poor college, those games mean absolutely nothing. The game that sticks out in my mind was when Simms threw 3 straight completions...to the other team. It was great. Throw me the stats when he played against top 15 teams, i know, you won't do that.
Posted by: DR | September 13, 2007 at 10:56 AM
if applewhite was so good why is he not playing footbal anymore. its great he is coaching now but if he was so good why isnt he playing? simms was 26-5 as a starter. 3-4 vs. ranked teams. with two bowl wins. in 2001 vs #14 colorado;Chris Simms threw three TD passes to move into sixth place on UT’s all-time TD passes list.Simms also moved into seventh place on UT’s all-time passing yardage list. He had 234 yards that day, giving him 2,838 for his career.
Posted by: aaron | September 13, 2007 at 12:21 PM
DR who do you think should be our qb now and/or qb of the future? where does your faith lie? is it the grad man? garcia or in the college right now?
Posted by: aaron | September 13, 2007 at 12:30 PM
DR or DR fan
I was never comparing Simms to Manning or Brady. Simms may not be or may never be as good of a qb as them; I was simply pointing out the fact that Simms doesn’t have a chance behind our offence line and even if you put a great qb such as the afore mentioned they wouldn’t be affective either. As you’ve seen Garcia was much better in San Fran and Phili then Cleveland, Det or Tampa’s offence Sunday. Now just for agreement sake put Simms in Indy or the Pats “O” and given the time, he develop into a descent qb, but as long as Gruden running things we will never know.
Posted by: Tim | September 13, 2007 at 02:10 PM
Name a Hall of Fame quarterback that didn’t have a great line.
Posted by: Tim | September 13, 2007 at 02:28 PM
good point tim. nobody eversaid simms was the second coming of dan marino or dan fouts. just give the kid a decent o-line and he could be a good qb.
Posted by: aaron | September 14, 2007 at 06:32 AM
Oh, now its blame the O-line time. Simms can't throw the ball over the O-line, he has the most batted passes by far. If I had a quarter every time I saw a WR throw his hands up, wide open, and not get it, i'd be a millionaire. Simms can't see the field. He can't check down, his first receiver is his lock in. These WRs don't even care that Simms isn't in the game. Simms is just a Ryan Leaf with a better attitude and thats a compliment to Simms because Leaf had a far better college career than him. Gradkowski has a better shot at being an NFL quarterback than Simms.
Posted by: DR | September 14, 2007 at 06:45 AM
DR
There no denying the offensive line is suspect; you said it yourself on some of the earlier blogs, but be honest, tell us how you really feel about Simms? All I’m saying given time, which with the current line isn’t possible, maybe he would be ok. We don’t know, but he sure look good in “05” after taking over for Griese. If batted passes are a problem put him in the gun which Gruden never did, until that happens you me and aaron will continue debating this issue.
Posted by: Tim | September 14, 2007 at 08:27 AM
my god DR! you seen to be a pretty knowledgeable f-ball fan. you should even realize the batted balls are not necessarily simms fault. the o-lines job is not only to block the assigned man but to keep that mans hands and arms OUT OF THE PASSING LANES! that is their JOB. and it is Bill Muir's job to teach and make sure his guys are doing just that. damn right it is blame the o-line time! how has simms gotten knocked out the past couple years? why cant caddy break one off? why was garcia knocked out of the game? damn it DR, it is the o-lines fault. imagine if simms had time to toss a long one to galloway. or in your case imagine if garcia had time to toss one. imagine if caddy had a hole to run thru. or how many catches alex smith might have if he wasnt always helping out blocking...
