Crockett's back; Askew might sit

Haven't been given a press release just yet, but FB Zack Crockett was around this morning and B.J. Askew's left ankle is back in a cast.

Seems like Askew might be scheduled for a week off as he is still dealing with a very sore ankle, and Crockett is presumably his replacement. Crockett was signed and later released earlier in the season, shortly after Michael Pittman sustained his ankle injury. Coach Jon Gruden said after Crockett's released that the Bucs may have a need for him later in the season.

Given his at least vague familiarity with the offense, he was probably the best option available to them. The Bucs also have Byron Storer on the roster but it's not clear who would start if Askew sits out this week. The goal is apparently to get Askew some rest with the playoffs approaching.

This may be good timing for BJ Askew to sit and rest. He is a very valuable member of this team who doesn't get enough credit. We need him for the playoffs.

I hate to say it, but Askew has been an upgrade over Alstott this year. I know I'm going to get some shiz for saying that but I'm just being objective.

Mike

Tom, the ideal situation would have been to have Alstott and Askew in the backfield after the injuries we have had. I am certainly not complaining about EG but I remember back in the days when Lorenzo Neal would block for Alstott. That was awesome!

Tom

Mike, you're right. That would be a nice combo. And Alstott would be great for goalline situations. But for the most part, Askew has been a devastating blocker and extremely athletic cathching the ball out of the backfield. Two elements that I think Askew is an upgrade over Mike at this stage.

RICH

Hey I think ASKEW was an upgrade from ALSTOT also. But only in the pass catching catagory. ALSTOT was smashing people in the running game.

Chet

Tom, and up until this week, LoNeal had been the guy leading through the hole for LT in SD for the past few years. I always liked that combination of Neal and Alstott in the backfield. We finally got a FB from the Jets that was becoming a valuable part to the offense, hopefully the rest will help in the post season.

Mike

I think if Alstott had been healthy this year that Askew leading for Alstott would have been brutal for D-lines.

Skylar

Alstott/Askew would have been the best 4th quarter clock killer in the league this year. Hey, he hasn't retired yet, so maybe we'll see it next year. I'm just saying...
