Pats safety Eugene Wilson visiting
Patriots safety Eugene Wilson is visiting the Bucs today, according to the NFL Network.
Wilson started six games for New England last season. New England already has lost conerback Asante Samuel to Philadelphia and Randall Gay to New Orleans.

So Wilson will probably play CB, no?

if they signed him

Saints just signed randal gay. I wasn't worried yesterday. I'm getting a little worried now. I know we can find offensive playmakers in the draft, but I atleast wanted cornerback filled in free agency. By the way his contract is 4 year $17 mil so at the same time I understand why they wouldn't pay a nickelback $17 mil. I don't think barber makes that much, correct? It's insane what these guys are getting paid in free agency. And it sucks he went to the saints. Now show me chad johnson, larry fitz, moss, or javon walker!!!!

WE cannot let Wilson leave without a contract.

Re: WE cannot let Wilson leave without a contract.
Huh? Why not?

The season has not started and the saints are already kicking our butts. Can't believe free agents preffer the dump that is new orleans.(and it is a dump no matter what the politically correct say.)over tampa.Whats up.

The "winner" in free-agency is never the winner in the regular season. Take San Francisco last year and the Snyder-Skins for several years. It makes NO SENSE to chase down a bunch of overpriced free agents. With the salary cap, it is much better policy to be prudent, pick a few key targets (don't overspend), and fill in with some role players. Bruce Allen is doing the right thing.

Randall gay was a good football player, and that hurts that he went to the saints. I hope there is plan in place b/c it sure does not seem that way. All the hype in getting playmakers and making the football team better. This is so frustrating. There is almost no one left in FA worth chasing.......especially at cb. Good job brass!

What a croc. I could see Wilson signing and taking over Tanard Jackson's spot and having Tanard move over to corner which is the position he played in college. Or maybe we trade for Lito Sheppard now. I don't know, the Bucs are either going to trade a high pick for a receiver or a high pick for a corner. If they can do that and still have their first rounder I think we'll be fine.

Wilson was a cornerback in college at Illinois, and there are some personnel people in the league who see him as a legit CB in a nickel set.

I am stationed in Jacksonville and I am unable to complete this task myself. I was wondering if some of my fellow Buccaneer fans can drive by One Buc Place and make sure they are aware that free agency started this friday, not next friday!!!!!!!

the sky is falling .. the sky is falling
ohhhhhh no, we're not jumping in and overpaying for a less-than-stellar FA crop like the crappy Saints and Browns!!!
ohh no ... we're doomed

Randal Gay may have signed with the Saints, but remember, their #1 CB is still the human OFFENSIVE highlight reel - Jason David.
And I don't see the pressing needs that everyone else does. I can see Kelly coming back if we open up the checkbook a bit more, and our only pressing need would be a nickel CB to replace Sammy "Blown Coverage" Davis. The rest of the depth can be handled through the draft.
You guys must not have that much faith in the scouting departments that brought you Ruud, Jackson, Haye and Graham.
I think the rule of thumb is to watch what Al Davis and Dan Synder do, and then not do the same thing.

Wilson can go play safety or nickel for someone else. We dont need to pay a nickel CB. Hopefully we can land a strong CB in the draft to play nickel and eventually take over when Barber retires.
All of you crying about the Bucs being a non-factor in free agency need to check yourselves.
Seriously now. Hardly any of these newly signed free agents will not even come remotely close to living up to their contracts. This is a free agent class filled with mediocrity, but the draft class is strong at CB, WR, and RB. The Bucs are going to take their chances in the draft and that is BY FAR the best idea.

Wow! why is everybody making a big deal of not signing the "big FA"?? The bucs are doing what is best for the organization! You think you could do better? i dont think so peolple! Everybody should read what Justin has to say, i agree with him 100%!!!

why not bring in Ty Ageless WOnder Law. Even if it is for just one year I think that he can get it done.

Hmmm, everyone seems to think we can't address CB in the draft, when many experts have said the CB position is probably the deepest in this years draft.
A few high priced free agents are not going to address the problems the Bucs had. Depth was an issue, roster depth isn't addressed by blowing your wad of salary cap $$$ on a handful of players.
Faine was paid, because there was no one better than him at his position in free agency or the draft and was a definitive upgrade over Wade and we also got younger in the process.
Have you people calling for us to sign every free agent available learned nothing from the Redskins or the mistakes of the early days of Allen & Gruden? Throwing money and signing every free agent under the sun doesn't work.
Have patience, let the market take its course, let the spending sprees subside and I'm sure the Bucs will sign players they feel will help improve the teams depth and at a price that keeps us out of the salary cap snafu from years past.
There still are many quality players available, and once these teams have spent their wad that will leave teams like the Bucs to dictate what they want to pay.
I'm just glad the Bucs didn't do something stupid like Atlanta did paying Michael Turner 34.5 Mil for a RB with a total of less than 240 carries.

Gay is not an all-pro corner, and he isn't from a tampa 2 defense. You can't just sign anybody to play corner when the scheme may not allow fit his style. Better to draft a guy and let him sit and learn what to do. Because with a free agent at $4 million - they've got to be ready to come in and play immediately.
That being said, if they don't sign a corner it's basically a declaration that Buchanon is the starter next year. We'll see.

I don't see what the big deal is...we already have a pretty nice stable of CB's and like many have already stated, the draft is full of CB's. We're just looking for depth and project players to be the next starters. BK is still in the mix; mark my words.
Posted by: Kurt | March 03, 2008 at 08:02 AM
Kurt, that's true to an extent. After Barber and Buchanon, who are fine in my opinion, you've got Torrie Cox and no one else. You want to line and play with T.C. all season if one of the starters goes down? And he's coming off an ACL injury, let's not forget. They need some QUALITY depth. I think that's the point here. Not that I'm advocating breaking the bank on average DBs.

They need to get off a little cash for Ronde and Derek since they both helped the team sign people the last few years by taking pay cuts. I'm ok with the teams patience and understand what they are doing I was just hoping for at least one offensevie weapon to show up before I stroke my Season Tix check on the 6th. I mean if my tix can go from 36 ea to $99. ea in 10 years the least they can do is get a playmaker with exp. Intrigue me!

Looking for a safety? Look no further than Sabby. HE WILL BE BACK!!
Posted by: Duffiedawg | March 03, 2008 at 05:25 PM
I was gonna sign, but after reading the blogs, I decided against it. Who would want to play in front of these ungrateful, ignorant fans?
Posted by: Eugene Wilson | March 04, 2008 at 03:51 PM
Hey Geo, not only did the Falcons overpay for an Ernest Graham type back, they have a poor O-line. Maybe the Falcons should have spent some money on a tackle and a guard. Yikes, how would u like to run behind the Falcons O-line and probably with a rookie QB to boot.

the bucs are sitting good rite now they have gotten some key offensive players like antonio bryant, warrick big daddy dunn, brian griese, and ben troupe and there inervewing dj hackett tonight so dont say there not doing anything in free agency.
