Wilson agrees with Bucs
Patriots free agent safety Eugene Wilson has agreed on a one-year contract with the Bucs.
The deal will earn Wilson $1.8-million next season with $500,000 in guarantees.
The Bucs plan to use Wilson at cornerback in nickel situations. He also could back up both safety positions.
Wilson, 27, has started only 10 games in the last two seasons due to injuries. He has recorded 10 interceptions since entering the NFL in 2003.
The Bucs appear set at safety with Jermaine Phillips, Tenard Jackson and Will Allen. Sabby Piscitelli, the team's second-round draft pick, spent his rookie season on injured reserve and will challenge for playing time.
Tampa Bay lost safety Kalvin Pearson, who primarily was a special teams standout, when the Bucs failed to match an offer sheet he signed with the Detroit Lions. Wilson should emerge as the Bucs' nickel corner and will be vying for playing time with Sammy Davis and Torrie Cox.

I have to say, the ucs have taken a very smooth and calculated approach to free agency so far. Very smart. Players they have picked up have created depth at needed positions and they can still address these same positions in the draft without having to reach for a player because of need. We have now signed a plyer in each skill position as well as versatile defensive players. So my question is now that they can take the best "available" player at #20, what position will it be?

I agree totally with Mike. This has been a quiet but VERY productive off-season by the Bucs. Kudos to the under-appreciated Bruce Allen!!
The club has positioned themselves to a point where they have an extreme amount of latitude in the draft.
Responding to Mike's query, I say CB or DT.

I agree but we still need to address the wide receiver position. Otherwise, keep up the good work!

Good post and observations Mike, I agree with you but also believe the Bucs are not through with free agency.
There were a few good FE players this year but many were overpriced and coming off injuries, there is a reason their own team didn't extend them. The Randy Moss's of this crop of free agents were resigned by the teams they played for last year.
I think the Bucs will take the best available player on the board at a position of need. Either a CB, WR, DT or DE. Many pundits are predicting WR with either Limas Sweed or DeSaun Jackson, but I could see the Bucs pulling the trigger on Jenkins from USF if he falls to 20.
Every year players drops down the board because many teams reach with draft picks as a result of need. I think a good player awaits the Bucs at 20.

Very good signings in the last few days. Quality depth is an enormously important thing if you have any hope of being a playoff team. They seem to have high hopes of doing that next season.

A mock draft I recently has us picking up talib rd. 1, Andre "Bubba" Caldwell rd. 2, and Ray freakin Rice in rd. 3. That would be a hell of a draft!
Posted by: Mike | March 14, 2008 at 07:21 PM
well, he probably wont play much except for nickel and maybe dime situations. we are set at safeties with our hard hitting backs in jackson and phillips, but yea, he could be a situation player.

I grabbed Eugene's junk once. It was pretty sweet.

Stephen, what do you hear, if anything, about veteran players that will likley get cut due to large roster bonuses. McAllister with the Saints is an example. Anyone that you think the Bucs may be targeting?

Hi guys ... I agree that we should also take Bubba Caldwell ... of course I am also the same guy that said Ryan Leaf would be better than Peyton!

Getting Wilson was a solid move...But can we please sign a WR?? Bryant Johnson got a 1 yr deal with SF...You mean to tell me we couldn't top that with the cap room we have? C'mon...Let's go get DJ Hackett please..I would be elated

Tampa Bay seems to have alot of uneducated people.

If DJ Hackett comes here, I will immediately change his name to BJ Hackett. Yummy.

Adding depth with each pickup. Staying away from the over priced free agents. All this fuss over Justin Smith from Cincy, the guy only had TWO sacks last year. Add Rodger-Cromartie thru draft (hopefully he is still available) and some WR's and lets get that second lambardi trophy.

I bet ya Jeff Garcia's wife is hotter than yours. If you even have one.

Contrary to popular belief, Jeff Garcia, not the box jellyfish of northern Australia, is the most venomous creature on earth. Within 3 minutes of being bitten, a human being experiences the following symptoms: fever, blurred vision, beard rash, tightness of the jeans, and the feeling of being repeatedly kicked through a car windshield.

VERY produdtive offseason? yeahhh not so much...

Garcia has a hotter wife than half of America.

They were gonna carve Garcias face into Mt. Rushmore, but the granite wasn't strong enough.

When Jeff Garcia sends in his taxes, he sends blank forms and includes only a picture of himself, crouched and ready to attack. Garcia has not had to pay taxes, ever.

What is this Garcia nonsense? Quit it already. It's dumb.
Posted by: Stephen Holder | March 15, 2008 at 11:42 AM
Considering Garcia has a face for radio, I was stunned when I saw his wife in Sports Illustrated. DR is making an understatement that she is hotter than half of America, try 99.5%.

Faster than a speeding bullet ... more powerful than a locomotive ... able to leap tall buildings in a single bound... yes, these are some of Jeff Garcia's warm-up exercises.

...Kipp your a hater.

If you think Garcias' wife was hot in Sports Illustrated, try checking her out in Playboy!

Some people look under their bed for the boogie man. The boogie man looks under his bed for Jeff Garcia.
Posted by: The Man | March 15, 2008 at 03:14 PM
What coward keeps posting in my name? Who gives a damn about Gracia's wife? That is pointless.
Mike, it's good to have depth when you have star go-to guys at key positions. The Bucs don't have that. Their best players are aging vets. The only solid young guy they have is EG.

Jeff Garcia's tears cure cancer. Too bad he never cries.

Ha you guys keep signing losers and sit on your hands while the rest of the division gets better. Last year you were only the best team by default, if Vick and Delhomme were on the field your sorry assed team wouldnt have made it above .500. You guys wont win more than 4 games this year with that dinosaur for a QB and your idiot coach Chucky Gruden running this crap team into the ground.

I would say the Saints have gotten a LOT better through FA so far. And they'll (probably) get McAllister back next season.

Jeff Garcia invented the bowflex, just so that his opponents would have a slightly greater chance of surviving his roundhouse kick.
