Bucs get a final look at Merling

Some draft news to report:

We hear the Bucs were among the more than 10 teams with representatives at a workout earlier today for Clemson defensive end Phillip Merling, with defensive line coach Larry Coyer taking it all in. The Tigers standout had been physically limited until recently because of a sports hernia surgery.

Today's workout was part of an effort by the player to eliminate any concerns about his health. Merling is expected to be a first-round pick selected somewhere just before or just after the Bucs' No. 20 selection. It's a pretty safe bet that he's in the pool of players they're considering, though we can't say for sure how high they have him ranked on their board.

The Redskins, who pick 21st, had everyone from owner Dan Snyder to coach Jim Zorn at the workout.

I don't get the sense he's real high on their board, at least from what I hear. Doesn't mean they're not intrigued. I think it's a long shot they pick him, but you have to be prepared in case he's the highest-rated player on your board when it's time to pick.

If this kid is avaiable at 20 I say grab him if he can play the left side. If the Bucs nab him and trade for Lito Shepherd, their defense improves immensely. I saw this kid against FSU and he just dominated the game. Of course we still need a WR with speed.

From what I have read, not a bad choice at all if available.I would prefer a DT but the value likely wont be there at 20.

I may be the only Bucs' fan hoping for Brian Brohm, however.

Also because the Bucs want to know who wants him. He may be available at 20 and the Bucs could trade down.
