Bucs audition three WRs

The Bucs still are shaking the bushes looking for help at receiver.

Coach Jon Gruden said the team worked out three receivers Monday: Eric Moulds, Eddie Kennison and Bryan Gilmore.

Kennison, 35, was plagued by a hamstring injury with the Kansas City Chiefs last season and caught just 13 passes for 101 yards and no touchdowns.

Moulds, 34, caught 34 passes for 342 yards last season with the Tennessee Titans and is an unrestricted free agent.

Gilmore, 30, caught just seven passes for 111 yards with the 49ers last season.

""We're still looking for some more players, not just at that position, but other positions as well,'' Gruden said.

The Bucs didn't do much to address the receiver position in the off-season, aside from signing troubled but talented veteran Antonio Bryant and using a second-round pick on Appalachian State's Dexter Jackson, who primarily is a kick returner.

Trying to teach old dogs new tricks. None of these are very exciting, and the time spent on questionable recievers who would have to learn a very complex offense is not productive. The Bucs need to focus on real threats that will open up the offense. None of these guys would keep a defense honest.

Greg said it all...

Why aren't any of these guys being brought to 1 Buc Place to evaluate?

Randy Moss (U) New England
Bernard Berrian (U) Chicago
D.J. Hackett (U) Seattle
Bryant Johnson (U) Arizona
Donte' Stallworth (U) New England
Andre Davis (U) Houston
Marty Booker (U) Miami
Ernest Wilford (U) Jacksonville
Jabar Gaffney (U) New England
Devery Henderson (U) New Orleans
Drew Carter (U) Carolina
Reche Caldwell (U) Washington
David Patten (U) New Orleans
Robert Ferguson (U) Minnesota
Justin McCareins (U) NY Jets
Keary Colbert (U) Carolina

bored,

Yes thats right. Lets rehash all the WR's that were either not an upgrade, weren't worth the money, or weren't ever going to leave their respective team w/o being well over payed.

Our main problem last year at WR was not the WR's. We didnt have a lot of big plays in the passing game because our oline struggled to pass protect. This lead to a lot of 2WR sets and Gruden playing conservatively. We won our division and made the playoffs so its hard to argue with his strategy.

This year the Oline should be much improved with the addition of Faine and all our young guys will have another year under there belts. So you would think the passing game will be opened up and guys like Stovall and Clayton will have more chances to prove themselves and make plays.

Btw I'd take Bryant's skill over two-thirds of those WR's listed.

The younger guys are developing. Parris Warren had a great preseason last year and he's almost 100% again. I wouldn't give up on Clayton either as he's out to prove why he was drafted in the 1st round. All in all, I believe the receivers we have are going to surprise a lot teams this year.

Ok lets comment on all those WRs commented on earlier to show how uninformed some fans in this area.

Randy Moss (U) New England Tom Brady or Jeff Garcia enough said
Bernard Berrian (U) Chicago Over Paid
D.J. Hackett (U) Seattle Came here didnt want to sign
Bryant Johnson (U) Arizona Came didnt want to sign
Donte' Stallworth (U) New England Over paid a good number 2 not a number 1
Andre Davis (U) Houston didnt want to sign here
Marty Booker (U) Miami He is worse than the 3 here today
Ernest Wilford (U) Jacksonville Inconsistent player not worth it
Jabar Gaffney (U) New England come on now
Devery Henderson (U) New Orleans Drew Brees or Jeff Garcia
Drew Carter (U) Carolina Come on Now
Reche Caldwell (U) Washington See Carter
David Patten (U) New Orleans Really now
Robert Ferguson (U) Minnesota I think we are pushing things here
Justin McCareins (U) NY Jets
Keary Colbert (U) Carolina

You see my point here, some of the guys that came into One Buc went other places. Now if you ask why that happens,as to why they wouldnt sign here if the money was close. That I would open that for discussion...ie see the way the Head Coach has treated some Vets in the past. So before you ask questions as to why, have some clue.

Glazers...THE NEW CULVERHOUSE! The reason none of the real high end receivers have been brought in is because Glazers won't pay. We are the '76 Bucs again!

I guess Warrick Dunn, Jeff Garcia, Kevin Carter, Trotter vets that didn't want to sign here?

you forgot june, faine, hilliard, garcia, etc....

I guess you didn't forget Garcia...

As long as they are bringing them all in for evaluation, we at least have a chance and are being proactive. Moulds used to be an excellent receiver, while Kennison was good and I don't know Gilmore. I haven't kept up with them over the past year or so. Any status on these guys anyone?

Hmmm...Same old philosophy. Pun intended! Hey Jon, we don’t need a team of geriatrics. We are a couple players off from being a serious contender this year. One word to remember, youth! Show us something baby!

Kevin M., you said it all - the OL is the heart & soul of a successful team at the NFL level. If yours is better than theirs, you can dictate how the entire game unfolds - picking apart their weaknesses, whether that involves ground or air attacks. Jeff Faine may end up being the most valuable FA acquisition in the league this year.

Hey they didn't invite David Boston yet?

Kevin is on it. our play calling despite the long bombs to galloway was very conserative. this happens when you lose a lt, your center is average at best, a rookie lg and two 2nd year players on the right side. Penn did good enought to allow us to have to only keep one extra blocker, but is hardly what the bucs were looking for in a lt. Pettigout will win that job. and these receivers are all here to create more competition. i would expect them to compete but for the most part the wr position is set with:
Galloway Clayton Stovall Hilliard jackson and one luck guy. all of them are vying for one spot. don't believe me? tell me which of these guys will get cut this year? yeah.. didn't think so

I think That the football staff are really looking into trying to change the way the offensive move the ball around. I have really not seen a evenly team on both sides of the ball. Can you Imagine what the Bucs could do. If the Offense Matches the Defense teams. Why can't the bucs go back to playoffs again. Go Bucs

All I know is that passing on the WRs they passed on in the 2nd round, to trade down and get the kid they got, if that pans out much of this becomes moot. Same thing if this Bryant guy grows up.

With that said, it certainly would be nice to have a sure thing come in, not a bunch of question marks.

None of those names excite me. Let's bring me old and cheap guys. Typical Gruden and Allen. Eric Moulds is done and Eddie Kennison was not all that anyways. The Bucs should had drafted WR Sneed or Malcolm Kelly. Give Stovall a chance; they never play the guy. He has the ability to be a big play guy. Like the Bucs never give Stovall any playing to showcase his talent; same thing with Rays OF Justin Ruggiano. All Gruden cares about is old WR and players who have off field issues. Besides, the 08 recieving core is bad anyways.

"Bored" was dead nuts on target!

There was a time to look at No.2 WR's and now it is too late. They really dropped the ball in this regard and if Joey is not 100% the passing game will suffer...

Does anyone think we should look to sign a certain Cincinnati receiver? I think there is one out there that is looking to relocate. I'll give you a hint: He loves running down the length of the field and catching touchdown passes. Any takers?

WR?? are you guys talking about WR?? We first need a QB that can reach them no matter who we get. We are looking for short break out speed because with the QB's we have aside from ( Chris Simms) they can't throw it pass 40 yards!! Are you guts kidding me?? Joey had to come back 7-8 times last year having 2 int! CB and Safties would let our WR go after 40 yards because they knew Garcia couldn't reach them!! Lets get an arm and have teams respect us going long. Teams are going to bunch up going short with no place to throw!!

I don't see why we love the old guys so much. Its cool to have Vets but when your taking away time for young player to develop, and the Vets are mediocre at that position, gets annoying. We got so much young talent that is going to waste. Here we go right here...My picks for WRs for 08-09.

Antonio Bryant
Joey Galloway
Mike Clayton
Maurice Stoval
Paris Warren
Dex Jackson
Amarri Jackson

Thats it!! Forget everyone else

Perhaps the reason to look at a Moulds or Kennison is for work ethic help. We have three really young receivers (Clayton, Stovall, and now Jackson) that have struggled with consistency, and those two have had relatively long term successful careers. Galloway has as well, but how often have your heard of Galloway being a good mentor? He isn't, he is a great player, but not much help to other players.

I don't care what any one says Eric Moulds is a good football player. I think if we put him on our team we would see alot of victories. I think yall is just hating on him because he can play football and yall can't.
