Bucs GM calls Favre talk 'hypothetical'
Bucs general manager Bruce Allen declined to comment on speculation Tuesday that the Bucs might be interested in trading for Packers quarterback Brett Favre.
The Packers have contacted several teams to gage interest in a possible deal for Favre, including at least one NFC team, according to NFL.com.
"There's been so many reports that have come out in the last few weeks,'' Allen said. "The only people that can address that are the Packers and/or the player. I can't keep up with all of them right now.''
When asked if he saw any scenario whereby Favre might play for the Bucs this season, Allen said, "Again, all of those conversations are hypotheticals. Only the Packers or the player can ever discuss those things.''
One quarterback who will be there Friday is Chris Simms, who met with Allen last week and will be among five quarterbacks competing in training camp.
""I met with Chris last week and we discussed what the plan was for him,'' Allen said. ""He's among the group.''
""We'll adapt as we go. The five quarterbacks, as we've talked about, the position is important us. We see it as a need position in the entire NFL. We feel fortunate that we have on our roster four different guys on our roster that have won games for the Buccaneers. A lot of teams wish they could say they have two.''
Simms' possible role with the Bucs still is uncertain. He will provide insurance for the Bucs if they sustain an injury at quarterback while the team likely seeks to trade him.
"The mindset is let's make sure everyone we have stays healthy. We've seen our depth depleted at different times at various positions due to injuries,'' Allen said. ""We really like the players that we have in place. We'll see what transpires. It's too hard to predict the future right now.'
Simms was very outspoken last month that is relationship with coach Jon Gruden was beyond repair and that he did not want to play for the Bucs.
Allen would not say what if any effect those comments will have on Simms training camp experience.
""They can discuss that,'' Allen said. "Our goal is what's good for the Buccaneers. That's what we're doing.''
During a pre-camp interview Tuesday, Allen also dismissed reports about an altercation between first-round pick Aqib Talib and seventh-round pick Corey Boyd at an NFL Rookie Symposium as 'blown out of proportion.'
""We had employees who were also at that rookie symposium and I think it was blown out of proportion on many of the reports I've seen,'' Allen said. ""That was handled about three minutes after the reports came out.
""We talked to them. First of all, it wasn't as elaborate as some of the reports said. People have disagreements all the time. Just ask my middle brother how many time we have arguments.'
Allen said the Bucs have to release four players to reach the 80-man roster limit. He said it appears that running back Cadillac Williams will be headed to the Physically Unable to Perform list. If so, he will count against the roster limit.
""Cadillac is the one you feel is going that way, but not only by league rule, we decided a long time ago we would give him a complete physical at the beginning of camp along with everyone else and make a decision on that day,' Allen said.
Third-round pick Jeremy Zuttah, a guard/center from Rutgers, agreed to terms on a contract Tuesday. The Bucs have three draft picks who remain unsigned - Talib, second-round pick Dexter Jackson and fifth-round pick Josh Johnson.

I saw Nicholson at Int'l Mall and he looked like a sparkler.

Gauge is spelled with a "u". Great work journalists.

Favre would be a huge mistake. We already have an old QB and Favre wouldn't be able to toss the ball up to our receiver's like he did with Jennings and Driver. Keep him away!

More mistakes, did Allen really say "Just ask my middle brother how many time we have arguments."?
How many time? Or is this more bad writing?
Then it says "Allen said the Bucs have to release four players to reach the 80-man roster limit. He said it appears that running back Cadillac Williams will be headed to the Physically Unable to Perform list. If so, he will count against the roster limit."
Actually, if he were placed on the PUP list he WOULD NOT count against the 80 man limit. Who wrote this garbage?

Does anyone remember when the last time Favre even won a game at Raymond James was?
I remember the last 3 or 4 times we've played and we beat them every time.
Stick with Jeffy.

Favre has been traded to the bucs for a 4th round pick.

Man, Bird, open your mouth so that you can stick your foot in it. Look in the dictionary before you speak:
American Heritage Dictionary -gauge also gage. Just like doughnuts is also spelled donuts.
The PUP list does count against the 80 man roster.
And yes, I agree tampasportsblog, Favre wouldn't make the Bucs any better.

For the record, Cadillac WILL count toward the 80-man limit if he is on the PUP list. I asked Allen twice. But thanks for reading!

come on guys, I'm a casual fan of the game -- like most girls, I get attached to a team because of a player I have a crush on or because I think their colors are cute ... he he he
don't worry, I'll vacate my seat on your bus as soon as the next cute qb comes along :)
PS) A-Rod is HOT ... GO YANKEES!

IF Brett becomes a Buc, we DO NOT want any Packer fans jumping aboard the bandwagon. Go back up North and take your pasty women with you.

TO THE DUMMY WHO SAID TRADING FOR FARVE WOULD BE A MISTAKE IS RETARD FARVE IS THE GREATEST QB TO EVERY PLAY AND IS STILL THE THIRD BEST IN THE LEAUGE RIGHT NOW AND LUCKILY THE TWO AHEAD OF HIM PLAY IN THE AFC SO ITS TIME TO WIN NOW WHILE WE STILL HAVE THE BEST DEFENCE IN THE LEAUGE. AND BY THE WAY HES YOUNGER THEN JEFF.
