Cowboys, Bucs have talked about Simms
The Dallas Cowboys remain interested in trading for quarterback Chris Simms if the Bucs will lower their asking price of a mid-round pick.
The Cowboys are believed to have communicated their interest in Simms last May but the Bucs have insisted on a third or fourth-round pick.
Simms has taken very limited or no reps in 7-on-7 and team drills since starter Jeff Garcia arrived in training camp Monday.
"I understand the situation,'' Simms said Tuesday. "I don't know what the plan is, but I understand the situation.'
Simms, 27, has been throwing after practice with quarterbacks coach Greg Olson and rookie quarterback Josh Johnson. He is among five quarterbacks in training camp with the Bucs, a list that includes Garcia, Brian Griese, Luke McCown and Johnson.
Former Bucs quarterback Brad Johnson is currently Cowboys' the No. 2 passer behind starter Tony Romo. Johnson turns 40 in Sept.

If the Buc's can get more than an old boot for Simms they should take it.
DR may kill himself if the Cowboys gave up a 3rd rounder.

3rd or 4th round pick would be fair value for Simms if he is healthy...but who knows if he is healthy. A 6th or 7th round pick would be better than release him at the end of camp with no return. How about Miami? MAybe Parcells can do for little Simms what he did for big Simms.

This information according to whom? No sources are cited, nobody is quoted. Is this total speculation?
Posted by: Brandon | July 29, 2008 at 09:48 PM
Why don't they make it a conditional pick?
Posted by: Kurt | July 29, 2008 at 10:18 PM
i am with everyone else in that i would take anything draft pick wise for simms.
Posted by: JR | July 29, 2008 at 10:21 PM
Brandon, this absolutely NOT speculation. We have two independent sources on this and they are good as gold. Unfortunately our paper have a policy that prohibits unnamed sources, so we cannot cite them. Doesn't mean this trade is going to happen, but there have definitely been talks.

They need to just pull the trigger on a deal. If they only get something in the 5th through 6th round range, so be it. Also, when trading players for draft picks, not sure if anyone noticed but Detroit and Arizona tend to be good destinations. Matt Millen and whoever the Cardinals GM is need to be at the top of every other GM's speed dial. Those teams are consistently picking in the top 10 and a 5th rounder from the Lions could easily be 20 picks better than a 5th from the Cowboys. The Cowboys would be one of the last teams I look for picks from. And let's face it Detroit sucks and they're not getting better any time soon, I don't care what Kitna says. A Detroit 5th rounder is just about as good as a Dallas 4th. Get me Matt Millen on the phone, I've got just the guy he's looking for.

Pulling the trigger on a trade right now just because you guys can't wait to get him out of town is some sort of misguided spite! Although why you all decided he is so worthless all of a sudden I have no idea. Best passer on the team plain and simple! His crime is he's a left handed down field passer and Gruden won't adjust his playbook to match his strengths! And oh yeah, he was stupid enough to get him self hurt taking one for the team. The one thing that seems to be completely overlooked is that our current starting quarterback has been mouthing that he is likely to mess with the team chemistry, or hold out because he isn't making enough money, and I don't remember Simms ever putting himself over the team! Please enlighten me to the reasons we all hate Simms so much that we can't wait to get rid of him?
Posted by: Valrico Rick | July 30, 2008 at 12:49 AM
This is baloney. I am in Dallas. There has been NOTHING, nada, in the print media, online or on the radio about interest in Chris Simms.
Several weeks ago the Fort Worth Star Telegram, which has the credibility of National Inquirer and is NOT considered a reliable resource, mentioned this rumor but with no sources.
This nonsense has been generated by Simms himself and/or his PR agent.
Posted by: | July 30, 2008 at 04:09 AM
Matt that's very funny; and true. Get rid of this kid for a fifth or sixth round choice and move on. As Gruden would say: "Jimminy Crickets!"
Posted by: Sound Off | July 30, 2008 at 06:27 AM
Matt, you're right! I will drive to the bridge if the 'Boys give up a 3rd or a 4th rounder. That could be another future Barber III given away. Simms isn't worth a 7th rounder.
I'm not sure where this info is coming from when my inside info in Dallas is saying the Cowboys will wait until the Bucs lower their offer or release Simms. There will be no trade for a 4th or higher. There is no reason to panic and get a guy into camp that you're hoping will never see the field. Unless, Romo gets hurt. I don't care if its Simms or Brad Johnson or Joe Schmoe backing Romo up, if Romo goes down, pack your bag, seasons over.
Can we talk about a better QB, like, say Heath Shuler? I hear he may want to play again.
Posted by: DR | July 30, 2008 at 07:37 AM
Simms isn't going anywhere. Gracia and Griese will be gone before Simms. They way Garcia has practiced the last few days, I think Gruden should make a move now. He's really stinking up the place. If this is the offense Gruden plans on putting on the field, we have a long year ahead of us and so does the Deffense. Get rid of the disgruntle players now, Simms is unhappy, not disgruntle.

Look Chris is a bright and tuff young man I don`t think anyone would argue that fact however he isn`t a starter in the NFL heck he wasn`t in college either there has always been drama around this kid and if not for being a players son probably never makes the league as more then a career back up and truthfully if you want to pay a couple of MILL for someone to hold a clip board pat a few guys on the back SIGN ME UP I am ready and willing to hold down that job sounds alot better then busting your backside day in and day out for less then a hundred k every year huh?
Posted by: Wags | July 30, 2008 at 08:17 AM
To Nick and Valrico Rick: you apparently haven't watched Simms play the past 3 years (including his debut as opening day starter!) He is terrible! Albeit, he has a nice long ball; it's his only throw that is effective. In camp this weekend, he couldn't hit anybody out of the backfield and has serious trouble with his intermediate routes. Furthermore, (although I haven't seen Garcia practice) Greise and McCown looked very sharp, hitting Stovall, Clayton and Jackson for multiple long balls against a very good defensive backfield. Maybe the two of you should not evaluate players as you apparently are either no good at it or just spewing your personal feelings which really don't have a place here.
Posted by: Kurt | July 30, 2008 at 08:36 AM
I think everyone is jumping the gun here. Personally, I think Simms may be the biggest surprise of all in camp.
If what im hearing is true, then I think the Bucs should keep Simms and let things play out... Garcia will never hold up an entire 16 game season..

"I'm not sure where this info is coming from when my inside info in Dallas is saying the Cowboys will wait until the Bucs lower their offer or release Simms." - DR
If anyone wants to laugh at DR, just Google "Cowboys and Simms" and you'll see many message boards pop up with the same exact "inside info" that DR is posting here. LOL... DR, you're a complete joke.

an espn report with ed werder said the same thing yesterday.

Easy fix - fifth (5) round conditional pick. If Simms makes the roster for the Cowboys it goes to a fourth (4)rounder. Come-on Bruce, let's start moving this along...
Posted by: mkurbo | July 30, 2008 at 10:02 AM
James, I called Brantley on ESPN 1470 and told them Gramatica was signed and Vanderjact was released and he didn't believe me either...until the end of his show when sportscenter finally got the word. It was funny reading internet sites claiming the Cowboys weren't going to sign TO when I was told two weeks before hand he already agreed to a deal. The other deal with TO..can't go there. I didn't read or watch any news yesterday because of the crap with the stupid Favre saga so I didn't know if it was out or not.
You should visit Irvin, Texas and walk through the crappiest stadium in the league. If you want the thorough walk through, let me know, I can hook you up.

How bout a conditional trade that the Cowboys give a 7th round pick for Simms and if he still sucks, they get the pick back and Simms has to agree to check tickets at the gate for 2 seasons. At least he'll earn a little bit of the wasted money on him.
Posted by: DR | July 30, 2008 at 10:06 AM
3rd or 4th round isn't bad for what is at least a solid #2 QB. And maybe Chris regains his old form and takes the starting job. Then it's a steal. You have to consider the money and time the bucs have invested. They believe if they get Simms some snaps in practice, he can increase his trade value by performing well.
Posted by: Chris | July 30, 2008 at 10:28 AM
The Bucs invested alotta money in Simms and have a right to fair value, f- everyone if they don't wanna give it. I hear alot of you out there,... but all the word is Simms is looking alot sharper in camp,.. and seeing as Dallas just wants a backup anyway,..let him play in some preseason and change their minds on what he's worth. I got nothing against Simms,... who knows what went on behind closed doors, but the Bucs need to be smart here and get something for him as some sort of return on their investment. It's not like he's gonng to be a problem in the locker room.

It's so confusing trying to find out who's playing well in camp. All of the media outlets are full of feel-good talk that makes for poor news reporting. Can't any reporter with camp access just give us an honest & fair critique? I have NO CLUE which QB is actually playing well or not and I read ALL of these articles. If I read one more story about how someone has "great speed" or about a group of players who have "good chemistry" - I'm going to vomit all over my keyboard.
Posted by: IMISS_No47 | July 30, 2008 at 11:38 AM
IMISS No47: I can only tell you what I saw this weekend, but Simms looked very bad on most of his short and intermediate throws (so I'm not sure where Jim gets his info) and I guess looked ok elsewise. Greise and McCown both looked very sharp. Adams, Buchanon, Brooks, Troupe, both d and o lines and Graham looked very good. Nobody looked bad quite honestly except Simms. I'm not bashing the guy, but he just doesn't seem to get it. He continues to throw the ball very low in the short and intermediate game (hence blocked passes.) The defense will be #1 in the league this year and I believe the rush had been rejuvenated. That's just one person's honest take from two practices without pads.

Thanks Kurt - I appreciate your honest appraisal.

these trade talks have been confirmed by ESPN today
Posted by: shane | July 30, 2008 at 02:19 PM
I heard from my inside source that the boys were real interested in Simms and my even give up a second rounder, because they know it's only a matter of time before Homo... I mean romo gets benched. My source told me they were looking for a quality quarterback and Simms is just the man they think can save there season.
Posted by: JR | July 30, 2008 at 05:13 PM
I am confirming JR's report, except that they have upped the ante to a 1st rounder as long as the Bucs promise to give the Cowgirls a 10 point spot in their regular season game. Details are to be worked out...Reuters
Posted by: Skylar | July 30, 2008 at 05:20 PM
I heard these same rumors on NFL network last night. They are validated, good job Stephen - KEEP US UPDATED!!!
Posted by: Bucsfan | July 30, 2008 at 05:48 PM
okay due to fact that DR has not replied to skylar and JR's remarks means one of two things
1) He is too appalled by those remarks and has to read them 10-11 times or 2) doesn't know how to respond to obvious humor and is taking it too literal and preparing to bash the crud right out of the two of them(verbally not literally)
Good jokes but a little off the radar guys

DR couldn't punch his way out of a paper bag.
Posted by: Skylar | July 30, 2008 at 06:40 PM
A wet one at that Skylar?
Posted by: Kurt | July 30, 2008 at 06:45 PM
Yeah, that too. Don't you ever get tired of being right all the time Kurt?
Posted by: Skylar | July 30, 2008 at 06:51 PM
Nope. The only thing I know is that I know nothing at all.
Posted by: Kurt | July 30, 2008 at 06:56 PM
Shane, the comments were pretty funny. Almost as funny as Kurt and his alter ego Skylar, or is it the other way around, or is it a gay love affair? I feel guilty laughing though. It's not nice laughing at handicapped people.
Posted by: DR | July 30, 2008 at 07:27 PM
Yeah, DR, you're the man! Aren't you tired of being absolutely 100% correct all the time?
Posted by: Mylar | July 30, 2008 at 07:30 PM
Mylar, there is no such thing as right or wrong in a freaking blog, but thanks. I admire your football insight to this blog even though you have provided nothing to it.
Posted by: DR | July 30, 2008 at 07:35 PM
You're the best DR. Everyone should listen to DR, he should have his own radio show, maybe something like "The Biggest Pitbull on Steroids" show.
Posted by: Mylar | July 30, 2008 at 07:37 PM
Mylar, thanks for supporting my opinion with completely absurd, senseless and stupid comments that have nothing to do with this football topic.
Does this sound familiar?

Me and my Romo doll sleep together every night. He says that I am the greatest blogger of all time. It's only a matter of time before I get inducted into the blogging HOF since I have no life. If Dallas trades for Simms giving up a 4th rounder, I will find a way to justify it so it makes sense to me and at least one other person, my Romo doll...
Posted by: DR | July 30, 2008 at 10:05 PM
Until Simms can prove himself in live game action, if the Bucs can get anything for him, they should take it. We broke this down on the show tonight.

kurt is a beast with many heads and if you chop one off another takes its place and in fiercer than the last.(lol had to borrow from the Greeks)But in all seriousness Chris Simms isn't worth a 4th rounder and if the Bucs get that from Dallas even I would be appalled and so would 95% of ESPN and I can almost hear Skip now "blah blah blah...Dallas should not have done this it was a dumb move...blah blah blah...The Bucs are probably jumping for joy over Dallas' mistake...blah blah blah...I have no testicles and I hate every move made by every team in every sport...blah blah blah...I am DR's father...blag blah blah"

If Skip Bayless was my father, I would have hung myself with the umbilical cord. I'd rather have Woody Paige as my father.

Good one Shane.
Posted by: Kurt | July 31, 2008 at 01:10 PM
DR i would have to agree with you on that one(about Skip). I could imagine Skip talking about the birth of his child..."blah blah blah...This is an exciting moment for me and my family we just added possibly the best acquisition of our live so far and i can see good things for this family's future...blah blah blah...But I do think this kid may have some attitude problems and may cause the family to implode and instead of us all living a full life together the kid is asking to go to another family while the wife and I are divorced and I am contemplating jumping off my high horse, which to me is suicide...blah blah blah...now back to the chad johnson situation..."
