Report: Bucs can talk to Favre
The Bucs can talk to retired Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre, FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reports.
Favre has permission from the Packers to speak to the Bucs or the Jets, both who have expressed interest in a possible trade for the NFL's all-time passing leader. Green Bay is unlikely to grant such permission to an NFC North rival, such as Minnesota, which is currently being monitored by the league for a possible tampering violation.
Favre reportedly told Packers G.M. Ted Thompson Thursday that he plans to report to training camp this weekend, a move that could be intended to force the team to quickly work out a trade, according to the story.

Big mistake! The unity if the team is better than an old icon that has a questionable commitment. I think this will disrupt the chemistry of the locker room. Regardless...I will support the Bucs decision.

I disagree..... when you have the chance to acquire a player the caliber of Favre, you take it, period. I have alot of respect for Garcia and what he accomplished here, but if we get ahold of ol' #4 and he plays like he did last year, that could easily mean the difference between a conference championship and another first round loss.

good can't wait to see what happens with brett just so espn can finally shut up

what a joke, I hope the bucs do get him and they go 4-12 again.....

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
This is just WRONG!!!! Unless we plan to trade him to Minnesota, this is just pointless. With the Saints and Panthers tweaked, a new QB with 3 weeks to learn probably the most complicated offense in football, and one receiver who can catch, spells 3rd place for us.

I WOULD LOVE BRETT FAVRE ON THE BUCS!!

No way!
Do we really think one more old QB will make a different. we need to trade for a head coach. That's when the Buc's will become a real team.

How 'bout Simms straight-up for Favre? Try to trade Garcia to someone for a late round pick or just release him and then you have your four quarterbacks (with Johnson de-activated each week). I'd love to see this scenario play out.

Brett Favre. Pewter and red.
Hmmm. Sounds pretty darn good to me.
I mean, his hair is pewter already. Coincidence? I think not.
Sign the man, put him in the fire, watch what happens. I think he has the heart to take us to the big show.

The Buc organization is alot bigger than Favre the player...let some team that is desperate for ticket sales be the cite of his fairwell tour. Us Buc fans are serious about going deeper in the playoffs this year...and Garcia (who knows the system already) is a much better bet than the interception prone media distraction that would be Favre. Lets hope that they trade a 5th round pick for Favre and then turn around and trade him to the Vikings for a 4th round pick!

The Packers want a 1st round pick for Favre he aint worth it if hes only playing 1 more year. Lets go for Anquan Boldin or Chad Johnson. Garcia can get it done if we get one of those WR.

Huge mistake. What is wrong with these guys (Gruden and Allen)? Why do they invite chaos and distraction on the eve of training camp. All for a QB who simply hasn't been that good 3 of the last 4 years. Favre threw a lot of interceptions in Green Bay where he knew the system. How many do you think he'll throw for the Bucs where he's learning the system on the job?

favre is worth the 1st rd pick if its pick 31,or 32.basicly those picks you might as well say are rd.2 picks.the first 10,or 15 picks in the 1st rd are great to good after that it levels off.if the fans are content with just the playoffs stick with garcia.if they want a superbowl go get favre.

and who would catch those darts? that is if he can avoid the defensive rush that the porous offensive line gives them...gruden forgets "D" wins championships...like t dungy put together here and in indy...

What are you talking about Darryl? Favre hasn't made the Super Bowl in more than a decade. You honestly think he'll get the Bucs there this year when he couldn't get the Packers there in the last 10?
Posted by: Capn B | July 25, 2008 at 06:53 PM
Marc -- enough with the "most complicated offense" nonesense. Gannon, Johnson, Griese and Garcia all thrived in their first year under Gruden. You remember Brad Johnson, righ? Don't believe the hype. You think Favre, who has played in a West Coast system his entire career, couldn't pick it up? PLEASE
As for all the comments about chemistry, I guess Favre is unable to rally a team? HELLO .. . . have you people been watching the NFL? Man . . .

If you were going to compare Favre and Garcia, who would you want to start for your football team? The answer is Brett Favre. We know Favre will play all 16 games, has a better arm to throw downfield, is a top 10 QB of all time and has a championship ring and 3 MVPs as well. He's just a better QB and we have a better chance to reach a SB with him than with Garcia. Yes, he will need to learn Gruden's system, but what better player to have for a cram-studying this than Favre. Like Garcia a lot, but love the Bucs and love the idea of bringing in Favre. Brett, Tampa Bay is yours for the taking!!!

They can't give up a first round pick for Favre period.. however, they can trade Simms and a fourth rounder to the Packers.. That would be a fair trade. Any picks lower than a fourth would be a waste.

I've been a Packer fan all my life for I grew up in Green Bay WI. Since I moved to Florida 5 years ago I became a Packaneer. If Brett becomes A Buccaneer here, that would be great!

The Bucs organization is not very smart, it seems. They will trade for Bret but he won't show up (remember Jake Plummer?). Bucs will become a laughing stock once more. They never learned.

Favre should stay retired... Give Garcia the contract he deserves. All Favre is, is a drama Queen oh those Crocodile tears he shed all that wimpering and whining jsut to make it all start over again in the off season. I wanna paly I dont wanna play get over it Brett stay retired we dont need you in Tampa we got Garcia

Ben -- the Bucs traded a 7th round pick to Denver for the opportunity to get a good quarterback and $3 million dollars. How does that make the Bucs stupid?
Also, Favre is seeking to come out of retirement. Plummer was trying to retire. Not sure how the two are the same?
Might want to be careful who you call "not very smart."

Favre was worth a first rounder 16 years ago; 16 years and a league history’s worth of INT’s later, he most decidedly is not. The Packers know this. Favre should stay retired or throw interceptions for some other team, perhaps the Panther’s so we could at least benefit twice a year. He decided to retire from a talented and up and coming Green Bay team and then inexplicably turned around with intentions to unretire but wants to go to some other team? Am I missing something? The only thing that makes sense to me is that Favre delights in seeing his name on the front page of the sports section and as the lead on ESPN. What other motivation might he have? He willingly left a rising team in a city that adores him and fans who deify him. That makes sense how? After several years of off-season suspense (will he retire? Will he ask for more time to make his decision this year? [nail biting]…), GB must be delighted that it no longer has to endure his off-season hijinks after this season. We don’t need this at the end of his rope, ego driven “gunslinger”. At a minimum, his skills don’t even come close to fitting the offense already in place, nor do we have the personnel to support a change based on his skill set. ‘Nuff said.

capt.B what you are saying is true, but favre had rookies, and nobodys he was throwing to.if it wasnt for the dumb int.they would have been the ones in the SB.someone like favre here would bring fire, and excitement to the players on the buc's.the receivers here are much better then the packs.imagine what favre could do with these guys.

The dumb interception is exactly the point- Favre has a history of those. Favre had an incredibly fortunate year last year- everything fell into place for them pre interception. However if you’ll go back a few years you’ll see that last year was an anomaly. Mediocrity has been the theme. Fans are blinded by what could have been last year, dismissing the reality of a QB having to learn and digest a brand new system (yes, Gruden’s WC offense does not resemble GB’s WC offense at all), adjust to the heat and humidity he’s publicly stated he wants no part of, adjust to a new set of teammates, etc. The best case scenario with a QB that’s NOT an old 38 would be a two year adjustment period. That doesn’t favor a scenario including Favre (not to mention all the other significant reasons cited in my previous post).

why not conditional picks for favre? say a first rounder if the Bucs make the super bowl ,a second rounder if they make the championship game, a third rounder if they make the playoffs, with the initial pick being a fourth round pick?
