Report: Talib and Boyd fight at symposium
Bucs first-round draft pick CB Aqib Talib and fellow rookie RB Cory Boyd got into a fight during a seminar at the NFL Rookie Symposium, according to a report by ProFootballTalk.com.
According to the article, the altercation apparently took place during a session on finances, but the two were seen jawing at each other throughout the symposium, which began Sunday in Carlsbad, Calif.
The symposium is attended by over 250 rookies with the intent on teaching them how to develop life skills like financial planning and getting adjusted to life as a professional.
Both rookies had issues in college, with, according to reports, Talib suspended for two games while at Kansas. Boyd was suspended for a year at South Carolina for disciplinary reasons.
Bucs coach Jon Gruden has had high praise for Talib during recent workouts, calling him the future "face of the franchise."
Through a spokesperson, the Bucs declined comment Thursday morning.
Stay tuned if more information becomes available.

Tisk, tisk...
Come on boys you are now supposed to be professionals and teamates. GROW UP!

Because no one smokes weed in college. That has absolutely zero to do with him getting in an altercation with a teammate, and shouldnt even be brought up in this piece(of crap)

Non physical, non issue, everyone jaws every now and then

These guys are fitting the mold nicely. The "Raiders East" transformation continues.
Posted by: scooterbucs | July 03, 2008 at 01:13 PM
Raiders East? That's just stupid; the Raiders suck. I imagine Boyd ran over Talib in practice and that is what this is all about; considering their draft disparity.
Posted by: Bo | July 03, 2008 at 01:45 PM
It was only a matter of time before AT screwed up in some way. Wait and see....this will be the first of many. He'll go down as another wasted first round pic of the Bucs.
Posted by: Bruce | July 03, 2008 at 01:52 PM
Hey Scooter...the Raiders don't hold a candle to the Bucs and last I checked, we fired Boston the second he screwed up. Our team has a very good history of disciplining/firing people who get in trouble while on our squad. We have given people second chances and for the most part it has turned out in our favor, but don't act like we haven't fired our fair share of jerks like you.
Posted by: Skylar | July 03, 2008 at 01:56 PM
So tell us almighty Bruce, besides smoking weed, what has Talib done that was so terrible in his life? You realize the number of pot smokers there are in our country right? It's really the lobbyists that keep it illegal; not the people. Medically proven to be beneficial in so many ways and far less harmful than alcohol, but I guess being judgemental is just in your nature.

First of all the guy at profootballtalk isn’t a legitimate source. Last year he had inside information that Derrick Brooks was going to get cut and Tony Dungy was going to retire. Chance are pretty good that there isn’t anything there at all, and I am pretty surprised that this is being posted in a legitimate forum without and corroboration!
Posted by: Valrico Rick | July 03, 2008 at 03:00 PM
Not a great first impression from these two. Send them to a symposium to learn how to behave like grown-ups, and they end up providing precisely the example of how not to react. This wasn't the practice field. It's a business setting, for crying out loud.
On another note, while it's shameful for our 1st-round pick to get into it like this...what the H was Boyd thinking!? Isn't he the (statistically) least likely rookie to make the team already? At least out of the draft picks. Now when they're down to the last cuts of the preseason, where it's so often a judgement call, does he think he's going to get the benefit of the doubt? Great job, rook! Proved already that you can't get along with our new golden boy.
Shame on both of them. Talib, especially, should know that more is expected of him.

Bruce Allen continues to destroy the franchise. You ain't seen nothin' yet Tampa...
Posted by: | July 03, 2008 at 03:31 PM
Wait, two guys argue off the field and suddenly it's the apocalypse thanks to Bruce Allen? Are you serious?
Leonard Little KILLED a woman while drunk driving, and then was arrested AGAIN 4 years later for driving under the influence. While he's still in the league, no one is calling the St. Louis Rams the coming of the anti-christ. Character issues? Hardly.
(Seriously. I hate Leonard Little).

Sounds to me like an exchange of words and a few taunts got a little out of control and they got in eachother's faces a little bit. These guys are fresh out of college and still have no clue yet how to behave like professionals, so it's not suprising nor cause for concern at this point. I think a slow (football) news day led to someone blowing it out of proportion to make a story out of it. Like any of us grown men never got into a shouting match with someone else in our adult lives. Give me a break.

This isn't the worst thing that could happen. It gives the coaches an opportunity to make a point.

Another fine job by the Bucs drafting players with no character! Give these two enough time and they will be toking and getting DUI's.

Kurt pot is more harmful than alcohol actually. Alcohol only damages your brain and liver but pot has over 4000 cancer causing agents in it and damages your brain cells. even though people say that pot helps with glaucoma all it does is relieve the pain from it and you can go get pain killers over the counter at your local pharmacy. meanwhile alcohol(mainly wine) helps the heart

Kurt,
You're an idiot potsmoker yourself. Do you realize all the studies out there that have conclusively linked smoking marijuana and depression and mental illness?
Marijuana is dangerous are so are the moronic potheads out there that continue to downplay its seriousness.
Posted by: Brandon | July 03, 2008 at 11:38 PM
Just cause you tried pot does not make you a bad person... Bruce is also doing a fine job restoring our cap...
Posted by: Dylan | July 04, 2008 at 01:39 AM
So many judges and juries here. I wonder if you all would be willing to go under the scrutiny and judgment you all place on the players, team and organization.
I also love how everyone justifies their own addictions but have very little patience for others choices.
Stop judging everyone and take a look at yourself in the mirror, that's the only person you have the right to judge.

I agree with the comment about profootballtalk not being a legit source. That guy reports about guys stepping in dog crap (allegedly). He just throws stories out there and sees what sticks... even if they were arguing/fighting, how many stories come out of training camp about these guys getting into it with each other? It's the nature of the game - it's a violent sport, full of trash talking.
Posted by: CW | July 04, 2008 at 08:27 AM
You don't win with bad character guys. It's that simple. That is why teams are trending toward building their organization around the scouting department.

Shane,
Actually Glaucoma is painless. It is a flattening of the optic nerve due to high pressure in the eyeball. I believe that smoking the evil weed is shown to reduce the pressure in the eye, if I'm not mistaken..not that I have any experience with that specific treatment.

Mike Jenkins wouldn't have gotten into a fight with a teammate...
Posted by: Dave W | July 05, 2008 at 06:51 PM
mike jenkins wont be half the player talib will be.who cares abuot the fight corey boyd wont even make the team.we have too many backs already.
Posted by: john | July 06, 2008 at 10:37 AM
John, Talib and Jenkins are two different corners. To say he wont be half the corner back Talib is shows an extreme bias for the bucs. Jenkins is an amazing talent. Back to topic though, fights happen between players all the time... this just happened to be in the wrong place. Boyd is going to fight against kenneth darby for that forth/ fifth spot.

TO SHANE & BRANDON - Please stop with your opinions on pot. You are spouting republican/government garbage stats that are not factual. Your "facts" are made up and you both look stupid spouting them off.
Posted by: Reason | July 06, 2008 at 04:51 PM
Who cares? Another wasted 1st round pick? Like Davin Joseph or Gaines Adams? I think it's good they've lit a fire under each other before training camp. If ruining the team is building the league's best young offensive line, a good cap number and fielding the division champs, then Allen is full speed ahead.
Posted by: 74 | July 06, 2008 at 05:53 PM
hey reason go ahead and look up the side effects of smoking pot(when the haze dissipates) and you'll actually see that the facts are not made up and are endorsed by many doctors

Making mountains out of molehills. I guess it just depends on what reports you read by whom as to what and whether to believe them or not.
Posted by: Kurt | July 07, 2008 at 03:17 PM
Shane, so you know your history? Do you know doctors used to endorse camel cigarettes? If the government wants to ban something, they will. Look at ephedra, it's been taken off the market despite the facts that aspirin has killed way more people than ephedra ever has. In fact, not many people have died from ephedra and yet it was banned by overhyped hysteria. That is what got MJ banned. Our country was built by hemp fields. Rope, fabrics, and paper used to be made from hemp. In fact, hemp is better used. 100 acres of hemp can produce more paper than 100 acres of trees because of the quick regrowth. That was part of the main reason MJ was banned. Hemp was a far better product than cotton. A few rich businessmen (Mr. Reuters was one of them) saw the opportunity to tie MJ and hemp together and caused public panic with pure lies to get it banned and eliminate their better competition. It's a stronger better product, and yet, it was banned (sort of what Bushey did to Kerry in 2004, made a war hero into a bad guy despite the fact he was a coward and avoided his service. In retrospect, it probably was a good thing he hid under his daddy's cover, he probably would have gotten more hard working Americans killed back then, than he has gotten killed in his faulty war today) Anyways, alcohol is far worse than MJ, statistics prove that too. Quit being a lemming and look into the situation before you go off saying something is bad. You probably still think there are WMD's in Iraq too. That's your history lesson for the day.
On the football side, who cares about two football players fighting. That's what they are supposed to do. It wasn't the right forum, but they were probably bored out of their mind and they at least provided entertainment for the other bored players. Training camp needs to get here quickly so we stop reporting trivial crap.

To Shane & Brandon,
Your miopic views of marijuana vs. alcohol are sadly generalized statements backed up by wreckless Republican rhetoric. When you realize that the world consists of a lot of gray and not so much balck and white, then we'll be in the same arena to talk. Overall, with everything considered, to say that alcohol is more beneficial (or less harmful) than marijuana means you lack the ability to see the forest through the trees (no pun intended.) The fact is that doctors did not ask that marijuana be made illegal; DOW chemical did after we used it extensively in WWII to produce oil/rope/etc. as DR so eloquently put it. DOW saw the dilemma pot posed for the industrial compound was successful in making it illegal; just as Big Oil is being successful in bashing ethanol even though our government pays farmers to "not produce" corn in order to keep the prices high in the market (our beloved farm bill.) There is a lot in the governemnt documents section of your local library that you need to uncover (I suggest starting with Reagan's administration;) that is, if you really want the truth of the matter(s.)
One last thought; don't come to a battle of witts so utterly unarmed!

Hey DR what do you think about the reports of the Cowboys being interested in Chris Simms?
Posted by: aaron | July 08, 2008 at 02:50 PM
aaron, I heard that and I had to pull my vehicle over to vomit. I had to at least lost 20 pounds. I calmed myself because it's just rumor and speculation, but if it came true, I may drive to the sunshine skyway.
In all seriousness, Brad Johnson is a terible back up to Romo right now. He is old and immobile and they have to change the offense when he comes in which is not a good thing when you're doing things well. However, Simms would be a horrible back up as well. He has been an average at best QB, which fortunately for him, in this era of the NFL, average at best QB's are worthy of a roster spot. Simms has never proved himself on the field. He never put back to back quality performances together and he couldn't even win the big game in Texas. I worry for his safety going anywhere near Austin, Texas. His choking ways were hopefully forgotten after Vince Young took them to the shady and very questionable promise land, called a college football championship.
Posted by: DR | July 08, 2008 at 03:36 PM
Chrissy Simms would bomb in Dallas and Buffalo, anywhere he will end up.
Posted by: STIXX | July 09, 2008 at 01:12 PM
DR and Kurt- nice work. In addition, William Randolph Hearst was also pivotal in getting MJ outlawed. He used his papers (using paper made from wood pulp from an industry he had huge financial interest in- hence the narrowly focused and dollar driven MJ crusade) to crusade against MJ in a feckless "Reefer Madness" type fashion. Anyway, my two cents.
As for the rookies, I agree with what someone wrote above. Likley Boyd ran over Talib during practice and that started their mouths running. Nothing to worry about at this point. Boyd may turn out to be a better player than Talib.
