Favre talking to Bucs, multiple reports say
The Bucs are talking to Brett Favre about the possibility of a trade to Tampa Bay, according to multiple reports.
One Green Bay outlet is calling the talks "serious," adding a deal could be consummated soon. Favre has spent the day talking with Green Bay officials but seems to have failed to reach a resolution that will allow him to play for the Packers.
If that is the case, the next option the team planned to explore was a trade. The Bucs are in prime position to swing the deal, provided Favre is amenable to playing in Tampa Bay -- something that isn't yet known. Tampa Bay has adequate cap space to accommodate Favre's $12-million salary. The Bucs also could handle rejection by Favre because they have experienced quarterbacks in place if he chooses not to report. The Jets, the other reported suitor, is in a much less favorable cap situation that would require them to clear cap space to take on Favre's salary.
Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy is scheduled to have a 6 p.m. news conference. Bucs general manager Bruce Allen is unavailable for comment. He is out of town because of a previously-scheduled meeting unrelated to Favre, team officials confirmed.
Asked this morning about Favre, Bucs coach Jon Gruden tried to deflect the Favre talk, telling the St. Petersburg Times "I love all these reports. I enjoy reading them."
Favre met with Packers officials earlier today and said the sides were deadlocked.
"We're at a stalemate," he said. "Mike (McCarthy) and I both agreed last night that me being out there is a distraction and will continue to be a distraction. We all know the reason I'm here is because the commissioner reinstated me so we have a lot of things to figure out. It's simple and complicated, both at the same time."

wendy nix on espn said at 5pm est that farve told her he is hopeful a trade to the bucs can be worked out.

Please, please, please stay away
And stay retired. You've embarrassed yourself enough already.

Hop on board, Brett. Naysayers be damned.

The Bucs don't need Favre. As a life long Bucs fan I don't want to see our team make a mistake by sigining an old qb that we'll only get 1 or 2 years of out max....... Stay away Brett!

If we do get Favre, we should also consider re-signing Sapp, Lynch, Marshall Faulk, and a bunch of other former Pro Bowlers. Then we could start a new ad campaign for the '08 season:
Tampa Bay Buccaneer HIT SHOW!!!
(C'mon, you know you're laughing at the thought of it. "Devil Ray Hit Show" made EVERYONE smile)

I just want the Bucs-Favre jersey.
Posted by: Al | August 05, 2008 at 05:41 PM
For every person who is against this guy and thinks he is washed up:
He is a top five quarterback IN THE WHOLE LEAGUE even at his current age!
And he is probably the greatest of all time. How could you not want this guy for one or two years? He is going to be around as long as Garcia would be. He has NEVER missed a game, and im sure Garcia will miss at least one this year. How could you not want this???
Posted by: Tony | August 05, 2008 at 05:43 PM
For those Bus Fans that say they don't want Favre... And he is too old.. How old is Garcia? Exactly. I am a life long packer fan and if you get Favre, you are in the playoffs for sure and maybe a chance at a superbowl. He's better then anything you throw out there. So what if you rent him for a year or two.. it's not like Garcia is getting any younger.. and he is hurt. Shut up and welcome Favre with open arms and watch your team take off.
Posted by: Andy | August 05, 2008 at 05:45 PM
Stay OUT of Tampa.
We do NOT want you here either.
Posted by: Debbie | August 05, 2008 at 05:46 PM
We absolutely do not need Favre here!! We may not have the best QB's in place, but they will do just fine. He's great and all, but it's just not a good idea right now. What a circus it will be, and can he even learn the playbook in time?

here is a link that said as of 5:30 p.m. the deal to the bucs with brett has been completed and is about to be announced.

Bring Favre on to Tampa
Posted by: Rich | August 05, 2008 at 05:52 PM
I'd rather get Aaron Rodgers instead.
Posted by: Mike | August 05, 2008 at 05:52 PM
time to warm up the t.v. at 6 p.m. the packers coach is going to have a televised press conference. should be on one of the espn channels.
Posted by: george | August 05, 2008 at 05:55 PM
I would welcome Favre...then immediately trade him to Minnesota! Whatever draft picks I could get out of them would be more profitable than the 1 or 2 years I'll get out of Brett.
Posted by: Jason | August 05, 2008 at 05:58 PM
Who is Favre going to throw to?
Posted by: jh | August 05, 2008 at 06:00 PM
NO NO NO what mess hell no if he comes I won't go!!!
Posted by: jc | August 05, 2008 at 06:00 PM
I dont know, part of me says oh know, and part of me says let me reserve judgment. I guess i can only wait and watch the circus begin. He is Brett Favre yet it is seriously late in the training camp season. Can he learn the system? i hope so. Will he go to the Super Bowl? i just don't see it.
Posted by: | August 05, 2008 at 06:05 PM
The Bucs should take Favre, send Garcia to Minnesota, and have Minn give up the draft picks to Green Bay.
Posted by: T-money | August 05, 2008 at 06:10 PM
Speak for yourself when you say we don't want Favre... He was a beast last season, and one of the major reasons that GB made the playoffs -- Favre as our starting QB, and McCown and Johnson studying under him would make me happy... and maybe let the NFC South Champions repeat! I'll buy a Favre Bucs jersey tomorrow!
Posted by: Joey Myers | August 05, 2008 at 06:11 PM
If you think the Bucs don't need Favre, you're blind as a bat and maybe you should stick to baseball. Last year, the Bucs had the third weakest schedule in the league and barely had a winning season (1 win over .500). Yes, we're rebuilding and have a lot of young talent to go with the graybeards, but Favre would make the team much better if the O-line rates better than mediocre.
Posted by: CVal | August 05, 2008 at 06:13 PM
Favre is an upgrade for the Bucs QB position. Bruce Allen needs to get back from his supposed non-Favre related during-training-camp trip and get this done.
Better yet, let the Glazer boys handle it. They can do what they want quickly.
Posted by: Fugilebrity | August 05, 2008 at 06:14 PM
Brett Favre is a thousand times better than Garcia. Welcome to Tampa Brett. The Bucs should give the Packers Chris Sims and a draft pick.
Posted by: Tyrone | August 05, 2008 at 06:14 PM
I agree Brett is better than what we have...however, this situation sounds eerily simliar to Joe Montana and the KC Chiefs...did that team improve dramatically with him?
Posted by: Jason | August 05, 2008 at 06:17 PM
good one dave in arkansas...lmao
Posted by: scooterbucs | August 05, 2008 at 06:17 PM
Oh well, I didn't want to win this year anyway. Maybe we can get a top 5 pick again.
Posted by: Marc | August 05, 2008 at 06:41 PM
hey guys, I am a casual fan of the game ... don't really know too much other than when to stand up and do the wave during a game and where I can buy JayRay Stadium
someone just told me that we'd probably get in trouble if we traded Bert Farve to another team within a certain time period but I didn't know ... sorry :(
Posted by: Jason | August 05, 2008 at 06:48 PM
i would take him if he promised to retire as a buc
Posted by: hockeyjoker | August 05, 2008 at 06:56 PM
Trade for Favre's rights .... draft pick
Salary implications = $12 million
Watching the Bucs POUND the FudgePackers while Favre sticks one in their collective cornhole .... PRICELESS
Posted by: Adding Insult to Injury | August 05, 2008 at 07:08 PM
For all the Joe-Montana-in-KC comments, 1) Joe was pretty beat up physically, and 2) he did take them to the AFC championship game.
While I otherwise lean towards thinking Garcia should remain the QB here, it's not a fair comparison, as Favre is healthy and playing relatively well.
Wouldn't be the end of the world; Favre could be great here .. though it sends a pretty lousy message to future free agent veteran prospects, about how the front office might treat them
Posted by: Dave Greenberg | August 05, 2008 at 07:20 PM
Farve is making the same mistake Ali made - He doesn't know when to walk away. It's disheartening to see great athletes stay in the game long enough to become losers.

Man I cant get any respect
Posted by: JGarseeya | August 05, 2008 at 07:45 PM
Is there anyone...anyone at all...who thinks that the Bucs have even a remote realistic chance for a championship as the team is presently constituted? Barring injury, can one not see the Bucs as a strong competitive force in the playoffs with a quarterback of Favre's caliber running the team?
If one cannot understand the implications of these interrogatives, I would suggest he/she get sports information from the brash and self-appointed sports maven, Steve Duemig, and just stop thinking for himself/herself.
The only serious impediment could be the lofty price of making the move.

I think this is great that once now the Bucs could be getting all the attention instead of the DALLAS COWBOYS. I Love it maybe Tampa will land after all, But for how long. I been a buc fan from day one. Why not! wouldn't that be something if not only Tampa won this year, But Beat the Cowboys out and go back to the Superbowl in Tampa. Iam 63 years old this september. And I would love to see the Bucs Hosting the Superbowl IN TAMPA. The Area would GO Nuts. Iam very glad that it may happen. Lets Look at the Tampa RAYS, WHO LAUGHING AT THEM NOW. HOW ABOUT TAMPA WINS both Baseball & Football.LETS START DREAMING FANS

Pete in Kenosha, "make a mistake by sigining an old qb that we'll only get 1 or 2 years of out max."
isn't that what we did with Garcia?
Posted by: david | August 05, 2008 at 08:04 PM
I love these jokers on ESPN saying that if Favre went to the Vikings they would be the NFC rep. in the Superbowl .....with Favre and that Defence. But they don't say that about us if he came here?
Could be Garcia didn't injure himself in a non-contact drill, they may just be sitting him until they can push the trade through.
Posted by: Matt H | August 05, 2008 at 08:06 PM
Why not? The Bucs are collectors of QB's to go along with all the RB's they have.
Posted by: Tammy Pinner | August 05, 2008 at 08:16 PM
I love me some Brett Farve!
Posted by: Sara Mootz | August 05, 2008 at 08:17 PM
You'll love him until he throws a stupid deep ball into the hands of an open CB in a crucial playoff game.
Posted by: | August 05, 2008 at 08:22 PM
WELL I GUESS I WILL BECOME A BUCS FAN. TREAT HIM FAIRLY HE WAS PRESSURED INTO RETIRING. YOU SAW HIM CRY HE CAN'T END THIS LOVE FOR THE GAME. TAKING HIM WILL PUT GOOD KARMA ON THE TEAM. WHO CAN BLAME FARVE?
Posted by: val sommerviile | August 05, 2008 at 08:33 PM
Sign him and let's go to the Super Bowl in Tampa. Give him his last few years here and we will will win with everything the bucs have put together.
Posted by: Ellen Rentz | August 05, 2008 at 08:36 PM
Favre can't play down here( It's too dam hot!) unless he likes 95 degrees all day!!
Posted by: I b 4it | August 05, 2008 at 08:38 PM
Not a good idea. Just as he agrees to come here will he say" I am going to retire or I am not sure". He jerked Green Bay around for three years. It's time to move on and for him understand that it is not all about him. Good for Green Bay.
Posted by: Ross | August 05, 2008 at 08:41 PM
Let's think about it from a X's & O's standpoint. Our defense does best when they can rest. Garcia gives us that rest by protecting the ball. Farve, I know, will make some nice long passes to Joey and also a bunch of picks. Either way our great, but aging, D is back on the field.
We will lose in shootouts period
Posted by: darren | August 05, 2008 at 08:43 PM
I'll take any of the tickets being dumped on here if Favre comes.....
Posted by: Ken | August 05, 2008 at 08:43 PM
sorry Val ... we don't need "fans of players"
be true to the jersey ...
by the way, don't you have some dishes to do?
go get your husband his pipe and shoes

9 - 7, yeah we dont need a better football player on our team! when we can win the division at 9 - 7, and our squad can be in the comfort of their own home to watch week two of the playoffs. those who dont want him, dont care to get better.
