Report: Bucs offered Simms, pick for Favre
General manager Bruce Allen claims the Bucs never made the Green Bay Packers an offer for quarterback Brett Favre.
Certainly, it can be debated what constitutes 'an offer.' Is it something that's documented and faxed or a verbal discussion of parameters?
But Allen's two attempts at clarifying the situation has not stopped reports to the contrary.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel source said the Bucs' offer consisted of Chris Simms, one of four quarterbacks on their roster, and a fourth-round draft choice in 2010 that would be awarded only if Favre also played in 2009.
According to ESPN, the Packers told the Bucs they would accept a third-round pick that could upgrade to a second rounder, plus quarterback Brian Griese. Allen has denied that Griese's name was discussed with Green Bay.
Fortunately, this episode is over. But somebody in the Packers organization must still be suggesting - off the record - that the Bucs talked compensation.

I made the point before ... will do it again ... how do we know THIS report isn't false?
Look, the Trib was completely wrong about Favre coming here ... just like the Times about Bay to the Rays.
So, why trust this story, too?
Do I completely believe Allen about not really talking to the Packers? No. The truth is somewhere in between. But, after the sensational "journalism" and the lies and the utter cr*p displayed by the local media in town, I tend to think the truth is closer to what Allen says than what these media clowns say.
I'm sticking to Bucs.com from now on for my info. I'll listen to what the players/coaches/management says straight from the horse's mouth in their press conferences without some negative hacks doing just that ... hacking up quotes to twist words to make stories appear how they want them to appear so they can thump their chest to prove they were right about some sensational story they pushed out.

Stroud,
Let it go you media loser.
"Fortunately, this episode is over. But" No it's not. You keep bringing it up.

what else is new

I just don't see why Allen would lie.. Everyone knows the truth, Jeff Garcia included.. Why perpetuate the opposite.. Like you said, this episode is over (thankfully)

Seeing that Gruden/Allen have alienated Garcia, Simms and Griese at one point or another, you gotta wonder if any of these guys want to play for the Bucs anymore. Yeah, they're professionals, but they're people too. If I'm a free agent QB, I certainly would want to play for Gruden/Allen. Do the right thing and work out deals to keep Garcia and Simms here... wouldn't hurt to throw in a couple of apologies as well.

If there is a shred of truth behind this, then Bucs should be rewarded for sticking to their guns. Simms is on his way out anyway and who knows what 4th round in 2010 will be. It sounds to me, then the freaking sportswriters should write articles about how NY overpaid. Stroud, you tried to make the Bucs management look bad. But, it looks like it back fired.

C'mon guys! This is the NFL. Everyone is on the hotseat except Brady, Manning and LT. Gruden/Allen are aware that they could be gone at any moment also.
I'm not worried if anyone's feelings are hurt. What's Garcia going to do? Tank the season? I don't think so.
He's going to fight harder than ever. After this season, if he wants to repeat a Browns/Lions experience again, then he can leave.

Tampa Trib does stink! I like Steven Holder but the other writers on this site stink also.
Posted by: Tom | August 08, 2008 at 05:35 PM
Regardless of the validity of this pile of Stroud, Allen would be intarded NOT to try and get something for Simms, let alone if it were to help land a Farve. Oh, so what if Garcia has his panties in a wad? Waah! Let him earn the respect he wants on the field! Let's see him go a full season starting every game and playing well (like FAVRE) and then we can talk about respect... and money.

It doesn't make any sense for the Packers to turn down a player and a draft pick to take an offer for just a draft pick, even if it is a conditional pick. It seems to me that if this were true the Packers would have asked the Jets to up their offer to a player and a draft pick or a higher round pick. If the Bucs offered Simms the Packers could have turned around and traded him for another draft pick. Maybe they do business differently in Wisconsin but there isn't any logic to accepting a lower offer. The fact remains that the Packers were not going to trade with an NFC club as long as an AFC team wanted him. The Bucs were used to try an leverage the trade. No big mystery, no big lies, just a matter of the Packers wanting the situation to go away quickly!

what gets me is when brett favre talked at the press conference on espn as a jet he acted like it was his decision where he went. once a player is reinstated to the roster the packers could have traded him to the buffalo bills if they wanted to. his only decision was whether to show up or retire again . he had absolutely no say in the matter. he had lost total control once he came offically out of retirement.

Hey vince, some people on this planet actually live far from where they grew up, and can't get a paper! We rely on the internet and blogs like this for our info and to stay connected. Stroud writes useless dribble, and people like me who protest it have every right to do so. This blog is crap, we want better, so we let it be known!
Posted by: Vince is ignorant | August 08, 2008 at 07:46 PM
Pete, look at your blog, it doesn't make sense. It would be wise as a GM and coach to keep your bargaining chips close and out of sight but when the whole world has you read like a Dr. Seuss book, you should man up and tell the truth. IF Allen would have admitted to talking about trying to obtain Favre in a trade, which he was, and again, everybody and their grandmother knew, I would agree that he is looking into the situation like a good business man should. However, he took the other route and denied everything and became a lying POS who can't even back stab his own players right.

As stated by most readers.........the story is over! Brett (thankfully) is playing for the Jets. Garcia remains the man in Tampa! End of story! Pleeeeeeeease let it be the end of the story.

This is classic Stroud, trying to save face after taking rumors and running with them as fact. Have you burned so many bridges with the organization that all you can write about now it articles about guys who aren't on the team and puff pieces on Chris Simms? We haven't seen a Rich McKay article in awhile, how about another one of those? No one is above going to extra mile to try to do their job well Stroud....

Who cares about the FEELINGS of the players? People suggesting we financially reward our QBs for flirting with Favre are ludicrous. Why should we reward a couple of QBs that at this point should be thankful they have a job.
Posted by: Brandon | August 09, 2008 at 09:33 AM
Let it go, Rick!!! IT'S OVER!!! You idiots in the media are not helping with the healing.
Posted by: Jon | August 09, 2008 at 10:03 AM
He never said he didn't talk to them. He said they were not interested in trading to an NFC team. What's so difficult about all this? Why are we villifying Allen when he had no opportunity to get Favre? It's obvious the Packers wanted to unload him to the Jets on another willing AFC team. Get over it. Our front office is tops in the NFL.

Since the Bucs won the SuperBowl in 02 the Packers have revamped their defense, runningbacks, receivers and the coaching staff and have had only one losing season over that time.
True or not could you really blame them for trying to get hold of the only consistant part of that team?
Posted by: John | August 09, 2008 at 01:08 PM
allen is a liar just like thompson of greenbay the only one that told the truth through this whole ordeal was favre.

Has a football team ever hosted a Super Bowl game in their own stadium?
In: Super Bowl [Edit]
As of the 2007 season, no Super Bowl team has played in their home stadium. The closest a Super Bowl team has been to playing at home was Super Bowl XIV when the Los Angeles Rams played the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California and Super Bowl XIX when the San Francisco 49ers played the Miami Dolphins at Stanford Stadium.

Enough of this #$^@!!!
The media needs to move on with reporting the team positives and season as it progresses. Get you're head out of your @$$*$ and drop it!!!
Posted by: Drew | August 09, 2008 at 05:32 PM
It was widely reported that the Packers were asking significantly more from the Bucs than the Jets because they did not want him to go a NFC team, especially one they play this season, without making it worth their while.
That is why the discrepancy with what the Jets paid versus what the Bucs would have been required to pay.
The real losers are Green Bay, who have no veteran QB on their roster and if the untested Rogers goes down with an injury, the oft-injured rookie Brian Brohm would have to perform.
I can't believe the Packers wouldn't have wanted to pick up Garcia in the trade for 1 or 2 years of insurance until their rookies get some experience, if not Simms as a backup to Rogers.
