Bucs trade Buenning, re-acquire Mahan
The Bucs have traded guard Dan Buenning to the Chicago Bears for an undisclosed draft pick while simultaneously re-acquiring guard Sean Mahan in a trade with the Steelers.
Tampa Bay will give Pittsburgh an undisclosed 2009 pick for Mahan, who was drafted by the Bucs in the fifth round in 2003 but left as a free agent last season. Mahan apparently is viewed by the Bucs to be a bit of an upgrade from Buenning, who according to coach Jon Gruden has struggled to regain his form after a November 2006 knee injury. Last season, Buenning was inactive for all 16 regular-season games and the wildcard contest.
Buenning was a fourth-round pick (107th overall) in 2005 and played in 25 games with 23 starts in his career. Mahan started all 16 games for the Steelers in 2007 but was unseated by Justin Hartwig as the starting center.

uh...why??

oh you didn't mention they traded for mahan

So what does this mean for the o-line depth? Are we back to being thin, and any idea what round pick?
Posted by: Erick | September 02, 2008 at 05:25 PM
Geez...I didn't realize we were that deep..on the O-Line to trade a player that can play both gaurd and center???

This makes no sense to me. Any insight into what the thinking behind this was?

The Bucs have traded with the Steelers for former Bucs center Sean Mahan, in exchange for a 7th round pick.

Dan's Little Brother, Sean Mahan can play center better than Buenning and replaced Buenning at left guard in 06 when Buenning went down. Good move Bucs

I have no idea how I missed the Mahan part of the story. Duho on me. Yes, it is a good move. Sometimes you wish you could remove a post. LOL

Turk... I updated the original version of the story. You might have seen it before that.

A very happy day in Green Bay for Dan's family, there is absolutley nothing wrong with him physically. There is a problem somewhere, when the guy who blocked for 85% of the o5 ROY, aka cadilac, cannot get back on the field, because he didn't heal as fast as JG wanted. Have a nice year

Proof is in the video, Dan's Dad. Watch him get rolled a couple of times in games, and I think we made a good choice. Have a nice year yourself.

I think Dan's dad has Alzheimers.

Remember all this when they [the bucs] bring back Dan Buenning for big Bucs
Posted by: Dan's Uncle | September 02, 2008 at 07:25 PM
Well, they didn't seem too happy about losing Mahan last year. Didn't seem to thrilled about having Beunning this year. So, one mediocre player gets traded for another. Yeah. Exciting.

Dan was good. He wasn't the reason Caddy was ROY, but he was adequate. The injury really slowed him down and we upgraded at his position in the meantime. It's not his fault, but the SEC just puts out better talent and Sears stole his spot. He was a value as a 4th rounder, but I believe Mahan is sturdier and provides starter potential. Buenning still doesn't look the same; sorry Dan's family :-(

I think you just violated a few of the comment policies over there on the left, Kurt. carnell was never ROY and your comment about the SEC is asenine at best. So what you're saying is that Buenning was replaced by a better player purely and simply because Sears played in the SEC? Gee, that's really too bad for the Hall-of-Fame chances for Johnathan Ogden, Orlando Pace, Walter Jones, etc... I guess that means Davin Joseph stinks, too, way worse than the backup OG for Vanderbilt or Arkansas or wherever. The fact is, the SEC is strong in talent but as far as the OL is concerned, they are far from being the factories that other conferences are.

Can we get an article as to why the recently released "hostage" Chrissy Simms has not been signed yet by any NFL team. Could Dr Stroud get with Rich McKay and find out what is going on. Calling Dr Stroud....Dr Stroud, you still practicing medicine?

I want to play for the Falcons so that the Panthers can rupture my other spleen.

I am impersonating an impersonator that wants to sell all Bucs Bloggers of all ethnic origons on the fact that I know what I am talking about. I only understand vulgarities and profanity, all else is quite frankly jibberish. If I tell the truth I am lying through my teeth, and if I understood what libelous meant I would probably take myself to court. I find humor in threatening remarks and political correctness boring. I cannot think of a trademark to stomp on but I would if I could. I think I have broken every comment policy possible and will miss my free speech. I am going to throw myself a beating now.

Great job Bucs, now go steal Larry Fitzgerald and or Anquan Boldin with your $55 million, and let's get a championship!

this was a ridiculous trade. Dan Beunning is a better player than mahan, period. Sean Mahan has versitility but so did Beunning. both played center and gaurd. But dan was just flat out a better blocker. In pittsburgh i heard more than once announcers refer to sean as The Matador. That isnt a good thing.

Brandon, sometimes I wonder why you bother to blog. Williams WAS the 2005 Offensive Rookie of the Year and quite frankly, everybody with any semblance of football knowledge reasons that the SEC is the most football talent laden conference in all of college football. Maybe I embellished that point a little bit, but certainly there was no reason to make some huge rant over arguable stats. It appears that you are still mad that Griese got the backup job (just like I knew he would and you didn't,) but don't be "asenine" in your rhetoric boy and please just let it go. You keep entering these battle of witts completely unarmed...did you get that?
Posted by: Kurt in Charlotte | September 03, 2008 at 08:15 AM
Aaron, how can you say with such certainty that Buenning was so much better than Mahan, when Mahan started all 17 games for the Steelers last year and Buenning can't even get on the field in Tampa? You usually make very astute observations on this blog, but I think you are getting more personal with this one. What's up?
Posted by: Kurt in Charlotte | September 03, 2008 at 08:18 AM
I was a fan of Buenning when he cam einto the league. But Arron Sears, Jeremy Zuttah, Anthony Davis, and even James Lee were ahead of Buenning in the depth chart. I had a notion that this may happen. I wonder why Buenning did not help his cause by learning to long snap. Having a long snapper who doesn't play anywhere else on the field seems like a wasted roster spot to me.

Beunning had Davin Joeseph and Arron Sears in front of him last year and John Wade. While wade wasnt as physical as we would have liked he was very smart. Mahan was the starter on a very weak o-line. Big ben was battered last year. this is from an article written this summer about the Steelers o-line....
"Considering how Sean Mahan is a giant punching bag for Steelers fans, I'm sure a lot of you are surprised he gave up only 6.5 sacks. Don't be. Mahan's biggest problems came in the running game. And as a center, 6.5 sacks is still what would appear to be a pretty high number. Against a standard four-man rush, the center is uncovered and only has to pick up a blitzer or help out in case of a twist or stunt. Against a three-man line, the center is lined up against a massive nose tackle who usually will be lucky to get a couple of sacks a year."
sean is a down grade. hey i like the guy. i was a fan of his when he was here, but i realized letting him walk the first time wasnt a bad thing.

sorry that went twice guys. sometimes i stutter.
Posted by: aaron | September 03, 2008 at 09:22 AM
hey i am not going to bash him, i like the guy. i hope he can bounce back from a mediocre year lst year. He does have versitality in being able to play both gaurd spots and center. and hey if he gets plugged in at one of the gaurd spots, he should have good chemisty with Faine having played along side each other at Notre Dame.
Posted by: aaron | September 03, 2008 at 09:37 AM
That's more like it Aaron. I figured you had your reasoning, but I still have to go with Mahan as I believe he is a good guard and fills in nicely at center also. He may have gotten bad reviews last year from the media, but you've got to remember that barring Holder, our media has no football sense whatsoever. Therefore, you have to take their criticisms with a grain of salt. Especially the comment "against a standard four man front...," that's fine and dandy, but few teams run a vanilla cover2 like the Bucs, especially in the AFC.
Posted by: Kurt | September 03, 2008 at 09:55 AM
Steeler fans may have call Mahan the Matador but he wasn't the only Matador at this bull fight.
I think he will do well. Different coaches - different playbooks - different style of QB.
Posted by: Dave | September 03, 2008 at 10:57 AM
Brandon, I know what you mean, Kurt sure doesn't but that's not a surprise. The SEC is the strongest college conference but that is it, college. There are plenty of colleges throughout the nation that have NFL talent, more than any team in the SEC. Gators were always great, but what have they prodeuced in the NFL? The QBs and WRs from Florida flat out SUCK in the NFL. Chad Jackson just was cut from NE, a second round pick a few years ago. The second to last pick, Colston, well, we know how good he is.
To ride on ROY honors for Caddy is again, stupid. There is one thing being a homer, but thats going way out there. Caddy wished he could put up the numbers EG did last year. He has been a bust, no pun intended, so far, especially being drafted so high. Caddy has been the 5th best RB in his draft class, not the 5th best player, where he was picked.
Go waterboy, get me a water...

it good to see you are still at it DR. i have been away for a while, but its good to see things are still the same.
Posted by: aaron | September 03, 2008 at 12:01 PM
Oh my God...DR thinks we give a rats @ss what he thinks. You obviously didn't read the posts as your statements don't make any sense concerning my blogs. Typicall DR dipsh!tedness. Aaron is right, things are still the same. BTW - Wasn't it I who informed you DR of how well EG was going to do before he got the start? And wasn't it you who said he was "crappy" and would not play well? How quickly we forget being b!tchsl@pped! Nobody cares what you think DR; get lost.
Posted by: Kurt in Charlotte | September 03, 2008 at 12:58 PM
I second DR getting lost...in Dallas somewhere please! You obviously didn't read the posts because at no point in time did Kurt defend Caddy or say he was anything other than the ROY of 2005, which was in defense of Brandon clearly getting that fact wrong! But we're used to you making stupid statements DR. And yes, I do remember you saying that EG was slow too and wouldn't be able to make plays in the NFL.

I've just been reading this blog and it's so funny to see people like Brandon and DR make mountains out of molehills, apparently just to see their thoughts online. Both of you are tools as evidenced by your ignorant comments and you really might want to find another hobby because you don't make any sense and miss the meanings in everyone else's blogs. Are either of you even Bucs fans?
Posted by: Tripp Ritchie | September 03, 2008 at 02:03 PM
Kurt, as usual, you reply with a stupid non football statement because that is the only thing you can resort to when you are proven wrong, almost all the time. You made a reference to Caddy's ROY and my reply was who cares. So what if Brandon forgot he did? The rest of the league forgot he did to. He certainly hasn't lived up to those honors.
You made reference to player being better than another player because of what college he went to. Thats a blatantly stupid comment that you couldn't support. College ball means nothing as soon as you turn pro. You're obviously in the pros because you were a great college player.
Posted by: DR | September 03, 2008 at 02:25 PM
Again, you obviously haven't read the thread. You're too stupid to bother with DR. The previous two blogs to yours prove my point and position as to how others' feel concerning your ignorant statements and lack of insight.
