Simms agrees to deal with Titans

Chris Simms is back in the NFL.

Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher told reporters Tuesday night that Simms had agreed to a deal to serve as the backup to Kerry Collins.

Titans starting quarterback Vince Young could miss four to six weeks with a sprained ligament in his knee.

The Titans worked out Quinn Gray, Doug Johnson and Joey Harrington Tuesday but told all three to go home. Simms also received interest from the Ravens, Patriots and Chiefs.

Congratulations to Chris Simms for landing a roster spot with potential.

I say that because it appears that the Titans, as well as Vince Young himself, don't seem well suited for his life in the NFL. I can't speak to his mental state, but I can't imagine the front office has a lot of confidence in him right now.

Kerry Collins is a good, serviceable backup at this point in his career, and he'll do well to help transition Simms into his new role. Basically, it's his job to take in the next year or so, and I absolutely wish him well. I hope he is able to accomplish in Tennessee what he only glanced upon down here. Good luck, Chris!

skp

good situation for simms, particularly since it's widely acknowledged that the titans run a dumbed down offensive system for the benefit of vince young...simms can pick it up quickly and stands a chance to elevate himself to #2 since Chris is pretty much the same QB as Kerry Collins only younger and left-handed...both are inconsistent but occasionally solid passers with big bodies, strong arms, and limited mobility

Tom

I agree Jay; I wish Chris the best and believe he will be starting next year. I also thought we should’ve kept Chris and cut McCown. McCown reminds me of Rob Johnson, mobile good arm but held onto the ball to long, wanted to make something of every play and didn’t make good dictions. Chris on the other hand I thought had the best arm of the QB’s the Bucs had, Gruden just had a hair up he @$$ (TypePad's antispam filter sucks) and couldn’t alter his play calling or his play book two accommodate Chris’s style. Shouldn’t a good coach be able to adjust to the strengths of his team? I’m just saying.

WHO CARES???

We all care!!!

Mike

Sweet, maybe now you will stop writing articles about him.

Gruden (as seen by the Doctor of St Pete)

Who needs a pro style quarterback that can throw the deep ball. Anyone can do that. A real quarterback throws a 3 yard dig route when you are at 3rd and 15. I'm an offensive genius!
If I would have known somebody was going to pick him (Chris Simms)up I would have held on to him longer!

Gruden's Hit List:

1) That bully who took my lunch money (check)
2) Mike Alstott (check)
4) Brad Johnson (check)
5) John Lynch (check)
6) Warren Sapp (check)
7) Chris Simms (check)
8) any other player who was more popular than me (check and still open)
9) Monte Kiffin
10)Derrick Brooks
11)Ronde Barber
12)Malcolm Glazer
13)Roger Goodell
14)President Bush
15)Jesus Christ

OAR

Simms had his chances here was 7-8 (losing record), 12 td's to 17 int's, sacked 43 times, 9 fumbles, and well no stats on batted balls(but we all now about that). Best arm doesn't mean squat look at Jeff George.
As for Gruden's hit list; top half is called injuries/cap situation, the second half is ridiculous attempt at comedy.

BigEd

Gruden: Simms was wanted so bad he sat out there for over a week and Brooks Bollinger was signed before him. Just maybe, your not in practice everyday to see his melon was never the same after the organ removal! Stick to the water cooler and fixing the BRAKE lights on the back of your house!

DR

biged, your a moron!!

...and in unrelated news, the Titan's announced that they are working on a new helmet shape for their offensive linemen that deflects passes thrown at them downwards instead of up in the air..

aaron

i agree Tom a GOOD coach would adjust to the players around him.

Dave

Good luck Chris. Good things happen to good people.

Al

Chris Simms is the worst QB I've ever spleen, I mean seen. My grandma could've gone out there and thrown the ball at the back of our O-line. It was embarrassing. My only regret is that he didn't get signed by the Patriots so he could totally destroy their chances now that Brady's out.

DMS

At least Simms won't try to ff himself for getting booed after a subpar performance. He's been booed everywhere he's played.

That said, best of luck, Chris.

Vince

Happy Trails Chris Simms!

Tom

I guess there's another Tom. I disagree with the other Tom. There are some players that should adjust your game plan for like Moss, LT, Brady, etc. because these are elite players. You don't rip out your playbook for Chris Simms.

He never fit in this system. He's a vertical passer so a system like what the Cowboys play would be suited. He doesn't fit a west coast offense because he can't freakin throw a slant. I love the kid's toughness but he has zero pocket presence and mobility.

chad

i cant belive that you all hate on the kid but i bet in 2005 when he took over the team and led the bucs to the playoffs you swore you were his biggest fans. Youre all hipocrits and i wish chris the best of luck and i hope he takes them to the playoffs and shuts you all up

Telos

Dear Dr,

Based on your apparent command of English grammar, you're the moron.

J

Oh sure, it's Simms fault the offense didn't score points. Just like it was Johnson's fault, and Griese's fault, and Gradkowski's fault, and McCown's fault, and...

The Bucs offense has NOT improved since Gruden took over for Dungy. And just in case the Gruden apologists are looking for proof, here you go:

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nfcsouth/0-3-3/By-the-numbers--Gruden--guru--label-fading.html

That 0.7 gain in first downs per game is huge, right?

How many more QBs will the Bucs have to bring in before people realize the problem might be with the offense?

Good luck, Simms! I'm glad you got another chance.

DR

Aww, ain't it cute, my fans are back again. Nothing better than having a few idiots post under your name.
Thank god or aliens that Simms wasn't signed in dallas. I guess there are teams out there besides the Bucs that like to waste money on horrible players that shouldn't be anywhere near a NFL football field. Desparate times call for desperate measures I guess.

DR

J, thanks for trying to show these clowns the light. They were discussing on sirius the coaching situations around the NFL and were wondering if there is any coach that has lasted as long as Gruden with the same mediocre record. They couldn't name any, but they could name coaches who won divisions and a super bowl and put up back to back playoff teams that were fired with far better records than Gruden.
I guess we'll have to blame the defense for a loss if they give up any more than 14 points. The Bucs offense only put up 13 points against the worst defense of '07. You guys who are comparing first week losses to previous years seem to forget the fact that the Panthers and Saints are much better than they were last year. I can't say the Bucs improved as much as those 2 teams did. Atlanta has improved as well, they upgraded their QB position with a rookie.

Al Gore

Simms better keep Stroud on speed dial in case Vince Youngs unstable azz tries to take him "hostage". Be careful up there Chrissy. The Titans have put lipstick on a Palen. Vote for buhrock, manbearpig is sereal.

Sound Off

RIGHT ON OAR!!! Judas Priest, can we talk some football and forget about the Losers who get booted. Read my lips: SIMMS WILL NEVER BE A STARTER IN THE NFL...oh he might replace a starter briefly because of an injury; OTHER THAN THAT.....fahhhhhhgitaboutit. K???

aaron

i find it strange when people say simms isnt mobile. its not like he is vinny testeverde...go to youtube.com and type in "chris simms, the dive"

Duke DeLuca

I'm both a Bucs and Titans fan, so I'm happy to see Simms in Nashville. Unlike many others, I like Simms as a QB. I'm not so crazy about his attitude and mental makeup. Vince Young, unfortunately, isn't adapting well to the change in offensive coordinators, so maybe it will turn out to be a great move for both Tennessee and Simms. As for Gruden, I miss Dungy. Tony Dungy is a dyed-in-the-wool winner; I often wonder how many more games the Bucs would have won if Tony had been allowed to build the Bucs for a longer period.

Sound Off

MISS TONY DUNGY.....Jimminy Chrismas! Don't you remember how TD couldn't get it done here and so he moved to Indy, with the BEST offense in the game and it took him FIVE years to get her done there. I don't miss TD at all. I do miss Warren Saap, John Lynch and Kennan McCardell. I like the way Hilliard plays. Right now! I think Griese is better than Garcia. We'll see how he does Sunday.

RD

HEY CHAD WE DIDNT HAVE AN OPTION GRIESE WAS INJURED AND SIMMS WAS #2

DV

Simms isn't a Buc. Why are you reporting on him? Why don't you do an in depth article on Trent Dilfers' new job as an ESPN analyst while you're at it? This must be Jon Grudens' fault somehow... and definitely not Rich McKays. Where is Saint Dungy right now anyway?

R. Goodell

DR, your truly the idiot here. Go back to your girly cowgirls site and post about you butt pirate homo or what ever her name is. If they where even lucky enough to land Simms he would replace homo by week three and you would then be singing Simms praises, you bandwagon fagot.

Vince

Stroud -- you are unbelievable. Love the spin:

"The Titans worked out Quinn Gray, Doug Johnson and Joey Harrington Tuesday but told all three to go home. Simms also received interest from the Ravens, Patriots and Chiefs."

You view Simms as a victim of Gruden/Allen so you spin it like the Pats, Ravens and Chiefs were interested. Every one rejected him, with the Pats actually turning him around at the airport. Besides, look at the list of people he beat out to back up Collins (emphasis on "to back up Collins".

Contrary to your view Stroud, the Bucs did not screw Simms. He got a big contract when he could not play because the Bucs needed insurance. Good for him. He was never Gruden's guy because he is a slow footed, slow release pocket passer. Simms was yet another bad McKay pick. Remember, McKay passed on Westbrook to take Simms.

Simms is a great guy, but that does not mean we all have to paint him as a victim and make him somehting he is not.

The Doctor of St Pete

Gee BigEd. Another quarterback controversy has developed in 'ol Buccaneerland. It certainly couldn't be because Gruden is a divisive, egotistical little jerk whose teams will always be embedded in controversy.
Trust me, there isn't a quarterback in the league or who has ever played that would be good enough to run Gruden's(and I use the term loosely) offense.

Wait...we just ran a 3 yard dig route when we need 9 yards for the first down. Ever see that before there Mr. Ed, er...I mean Big Ed? Gruden the "Offensive Genius".
Wait...we just passed the ball into the endzone from inside the five when we had one of the best fullbacks in the league...How about that one Ed? You're nothing but a Chuckiphite or maybe Chuckiphile (nobody really knows what you do wit that Chuckie Doll when you're alone)

You know Ed you're right John Lynch, who by the way said he would have taken a pay cut just to retire as a Buc, was totally finished with his career. We may have been #2 in total defense and #1 in pass defense, but weawere #17 in run defense in 2007 and we got beat in the play-offs, in part by a team that is a run first pass second team. We didn't have a safety in the lineup who could give the same run support.
So Mr. Ed, keep playing with your Chuckie Doll while Gruden continues to obliterate (that means break apart or blow up Ed) the team aspect of the Bucs. It's all about The Chuckie!!

Oh yeah, one more thing Mr (Big) Ed.....your break lights are done. Your wife brought the car over last night and I figured it was the least I could do after what she did for me.
