Injury update: Three skip Denver trip | Main | Updates on Griese, Ruud »

October 05, 2008

Bucs-Broncos live from Mile High

We're here in the press box at Invesco Field on a beautiful day in Denver. Before we get into some of the ins and outs of today's game, a little news.

Jeff Garcia is now the No. 2 quarterback behind Brian Griese, with Luke McCown the inactive third quarterback. If you read the St. Petersburg Times last week, you knew that indications pointed to the Bucs making a change in their quarrterback lineup.

With Griese having thrown six interceptions in the past two games, he's clearly been put on notice that he's got to be more consistent. This has to be a sign that coach Jon Gruden is at least willing to make a change if he deems it necessary.

As for the other inactive players, the one mild surprise is that tackle Anthony Davis is not active. That doesn't seem like a big deal, I realize, but it's interesting because there really isn't a backup tackle active in the event Donald Penn or Jeremy Trueblood went down. In a related matter, Davin Joseph is active, which tells me he's definitely playing.

As we told you last night, safety Sabby Piscitelli (elbow), WR Joey Galloway (foot) and FB B.J. Askew (hamstring) did not make the trip.

I'll be here throughout the game to answer your questions and share some thoughts and analysis. See me in the comments section below.

The Bucs are truly blessed to have arguably the best backup QB in the NFL. No worries if Griese needs to be replaced. I'm sure Griese will do his best keep Gruden from wanting to replace him.
Stephen, what do make of the report "Bennett was held out at the beginning of the season because he thought he was above playing special teams?"

I dont believe that. BENNETT isnt a primo donna type

Leo, there's so much info out there I can't always keep up. Where was this reported? I don't believe as well, as Bennett has always said he'd do whatever he was asked. I think he'd play special teams just to get on the field.

I was surprised when I heard it. "Ledge" on the pre-game radio show talked about it at length. It must be true. I believe he is paid by the Bucs for performing that duty. Basically Bennett felt because he is a former 1000 yd rusher he was exempt. He obviously changed his mind.

I suppose it could be true then. I don't know. I haven't talked to Bennett about this topic in a long time. Who knows?

Davin Joseph is starting today. I didn't realize that earlier.

The way to beat this Broncos team is to sustain drives and keep their electric offense off the field. Not sure a three-and-out on the first possession accomplishes that.

Stephen, do you know what the depth chart at QB is?

Stephen, please keep an eye on that road grater wearing #75 for the Bucs & let us know how he looks. TV doesn't always allow a decent look.

DR... I mentioned above that Garcia is No. 2 as we wrote in the paper last Thursday. Griese has officially been put on notice i think

Thanks, sorry I didn't notice it before. Yeah, I'd say that would be an official notice that the leash is shorter this week.

One thing that is going to continue to be a problem today is containing Cutler when he attempts to get out of the pocket. This guy is much more elusive than I realized, having not seen him this year

Im back. An I have the same message. Holder shouldnt we run the football this game? We can dominate on the ground against the Broncos. I say it every week. JON RUN THE BALL!

GO RAYS!.

That's a no brainer Rob. See above. Also, refer to the Bucs' earlier scoring drive.

is this game being called on the radio on any websites today?thanks

Stephen - Its been a no-brainer all season..yet we always seem to throw the ball 40 times a game. I just hate when we gash teams in the 1st quarter then leave the run alone for the remainder...we have talent running backs we need to pound the rock. Any reason Jon strays from that? Is it because he has no patience??

I am seeing so many plays that Griese is not getting for us that Garcia could.

Yeah, yeah, I know...the backup QB is always the most popular guy in town; but it's not like we didn't see what Garcia can do for an entire season last year.

Radio, my perception is the NFL will ONLY allow it on NFL Field Pass.

i believe you have to subscribe to a service to get it online. Unless you live in Tampa Bay and can get it on 620 AM, which I assume you don't. Someone correct me if I'm wrong about that.

rob, here's my theory on that: Gruden wants to win, yes, but he would prefer to win the way he draws it up on paper. Problem is, the game is played on grass, not a chalkboard. As good a coach as Jon is, his biggest weakness is his stubbornness.

Outstanding answer Mr. Holder. I agree most definetly. At the same time, it brings me back to my point that we could use an offensive coordinator or atleast a playcaller who knowns Jon's offense. Sometimes you need someone who takes that step back and says hey...I know what we want to do, but this is what they are giving us. In my not so humble opinion 5.7 YAC is better then 5.7 per pass...ONLY because you have incompletions when you pass.

Sorry I meant 5.7 Yards Per Carry..not YAC

Why doesn't Gruden ever pass the ball! We have to stop running. WAH

Domanik - a typical couch fan.

Now that I am really mad about the bolts lack of scoring I even more pissed at this lousey offense. Trueblood sucks!!!!! This offense is the only one the Broncos has stopped all year long. No talented offensive with a shity offensive coordinator.

That's a hell of a couple plays for Jeremy Trueblood there: negates a first down with a holding penalty then gets beat by Dumervil for the sack on the very next play.

Trueblood is getting embarrassed. I sure hope he rises to the challenge.

Bolt fan, you don't want to have your IP address blocked by the blog police, so watch the language. But seriously, I agree totally that this Broncos defense is pretty much a joke.

What do you mean the Broncos defense is a joke? I mean, the Kansas City Chiefs have a great offense...for a high school team. The Chiefs won by running the ball. The Bucs are averaging over 7 yards a carry, give EG the rock.

Again, Lord Kiffen's defense is doing a great job. They bend but don't break.

Is A. Bryant out there today?

Run the freaking ball...RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN...goodness I wish he would adjust his play calls....he is a fool if he doesnt run EG, Dunn til they cant walk tomorrow.

Why are the bucs not running. Were is Bryant and that o-line needs to get a push. This game paln is a little week on both sides.

I swear we must lead the league in drops

Sorry Joe. My bad for asking about him.

Its great to see Mike Clayton making plays. I still think he has potential

NO SHOT AT THE ENDZONE ARE YOU KIDDING ME...SO NOW NOW NOW HE RUNS THE BALL...OH MAN GRUDEN IS TERRIBLE.

A little bit too conservative for my taste.

You have to like the Buc's chances in the second half! Low tie score at halftime. A few adjustments and put 'em away.

Leo you are always so positive I love it. Sounds good...Stephen go pass a note to Jon about running the football!! Ha

You should have known better, Leo! :-)

Count me as one of the people ticked we didn't take a shot in the end zone.

I literally said to my ESPN colleague sitting next to me that Gruden wouldn't take a shot at the end zone in that situation. I knew it. Sure enough -- he didn't. Same thing happened last week before the half. They positioned the ball in the middle of the field for the FG. Go figure

Mike Shannahan said at halftime "If you pass to much in this league you get your butts kicked" wish Gruden would take notice and then look at EG 10 yards again!

The question I have is whether it's that he doesn't trust his players or is he just being overly prudent? Not sure which it is.

Stephen - 3rd and 4 and we throw a two yard pass. An thankfully Bryant gets and extra two yards. How come we cant run that draw or atleast playaction in that situation? Does Griese make a lot of checks at the line?

16 passes and 13 of them less than 5 yards. that makes no sense, just run the ball.

Gruden being prudent? Is that a sign that he might go back with Garcia soon?

With the blocking the way it is, he may want to go to Garcie. Griese looks like Frankenstein rolling out.

Great punt & coverage. Time for a TURNOVER!!

so pleased to see that gruden has NO confidence in his system, in his offense, in his qb.

No defensive pressure yet from D-Line. Wonder why? Maybe the cut block schem e and DJAX is not the answer on return game..bring back Karl "The Truth" Williams!

Man, this offense still sucks, and always will. Where is our genius now???? Denver's defense sucks and we can't even get a touchdown. I'm sick of Monte's defense saving John Gruden's butt. He sucks as a offensive schemer and from what we all hear is an butthole to boot....Where's the offense???If we could have had a top 10 offense(which from a genius should not be a problem)we would have already had more rings than the Patriots....We suck offensively, it's offensive to the point I can't take it anymore...

Stephen: Gruden doesn't trust Griese to throw the ball away in that situation. I think an '07 Garcia would have been allowed to take a shot.

Running a scared offense and as the game goes on the DEFENSE keeps the team in the game, i wonder if we will see any passes that will go down the field. Remember the 1st quarter when #8 misses the te in the enzone. That might be the difference.

You may get your wish DR Griese is down. Hurting. I hope he gets up I dont think Garcia is much better!

I seriously hate being happy about Griese being hurt. But...

Way to go...bring Garcia in and on his first action in weeks...you pass!! LOL LOL Gruden has got to be kidding me.

Okay...all you Garcia backers here you go. Happy?

It's a shoulder injury for Griese. His status is questionable.

Wow this o-lin is soft!!! With the return on #75 the line looks horrible.
This part of there schedule starts getting more difficult. The easy games are gone.

Notice we've been exchanging punts, yet the Broncos are edging closer to our side of the field. Those are the "hidden" yards coaches talk about. That long pass to Sheffler when we had them pinned at the 4 yard line is still having an effect on this game.

If you ask me, I say there's not much of a "question". I think even if Griese is okay, I don't know that we'll see him again.

Pittman didnt run like that for us except Superbowl game!

Defense is tired. To to many three and outs for our Offense. Lets go offense we need a score here.

Wow! It looked like Denver practiced that TD play all week.

Garcia, it's your time to shine. Griese shouldn't come back, but you never know with this clown. He may spite Garcia and tell Griese to throw left handed.

OK Jeff. Time to show us what you are made of.

DR your an idiot! But a funny one. Albeit we are 3-1 but we have problems offensively. Always have..goes back to Sam Wyche days! Bring back Dilfer, Bring back Dilfer!

Garcia's back out for this series.

"Maybe I should tell Bruce to order Jon to let the quarterbacks call all the plays. Oh well, soccer game next week. The boys will figure it out, I guess."

-- Malcolm "The Blade" Glazer

Hold your breath this will be a wild ride. Gruden, Garcia dont communicate well.

It looks like Jeff is going to experience the same issues as Brian on the deep passes. The lanes are open but the WR's for whatever reason cannot get there. It's been like that most of the season. Why not send DJAX on a few deep routes?

STEPHEN,

What kind of BS GARBAGE KIND OF CALLS ARE THESE? on 3rd and 16? This offense stinks. How Gruden keeps his job is beyond me. Year after year...NO IMPROVEMENT!
HOLD HIM ACCOUNTABLE!!

The thin air may be getting to the defense.

Is that bootleg pass to the TE going to be wide open every play?

we have to run the ball when we get it back

Jack's right Stephen...The media needs to do a better job of holding this team accountable.

This offense has never improved under him.

To expect the defense to win every game is just stupid. Nothing more than stupid.

Jack, I don't know what else to call that but a give-up play.

gatrmf, that depends on the score when the Bucs get the ball back. And the time.

we need a guy like stokley or a ricky prohel, ed mccaffery, wes welker type a good "hands" guy that is not a coward or a quitter like we have here Ike is the closest we got but Gruden wouldn't use him right anyhow

Don, I don't know what to think sometimes. Most people rip us for being too "negative" like we're covering high school sports here. This is NFL for crying out loud.

This team fools no one on offense. My great grandmother wouldnt be fooled. They never have. They never will with this coaching staff.

Simply pathetic and for all homers that to the last two wins that doesnt say anything.

I'll second, third and fourth the statement the OFFENSE SUCKS. You ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT leave the DEFENSE on the field the entire game.

OFF with Grudens head. Damn we need a head coach.

Grudens crappy offense has killed this defense today who has played there butts off. What a shame Gruden!!!!!!!!!

Drew- Lane Kiffen needs a job! HA HA

It's the same offense every week. It's unimaginative. It's vanilla. It's boring. And it looks sad. Just sad. e

Way to hold them D! This game is still within reach. It looks like "Gut Check Time" again. Deja Vu!

Drew and Rob are both right. LANE KIFFIN would be interesting....He certainly couldnt do worse than Gruden and his clowns.

What's it been 5, 6 or 7 years of this OFFENSIVE BS. I think Garcia was right, p'ed off Gruden with his open statement about complexity. Even I can call it from here, DINK, DINK, DUNK and PUNT.

That was a disappointing drive for the defense, but I don't feel right ripping them for that against this team. Think about this: the Broncos came in averaging 33.2 points and 435.5 yards. They have 16 points and 305 yards right now.

And by the way, I can't even begin to emphasize how horrific this Denver defense is. Yet the Bucs have six points.

HAHAHA! FIRST DOWN! Exactly how Gruden drew it up!!

:-)

Looks like NOBODY wants that ball!

We got a break there!

Allow me to describe this offense.. DINK...DUNK...DINK...DUNK...DINK...DUNK...

Who are these jerks on offense fooling?

I believe the Broncos have just one play over 20 yards thus far.

I rest my case... DINK, DINK, DUNK (INT).

Air it out on 1st down, no team in the NFL would expect it from TB.

Pitch on 3rd down?

I'm burning my Bucco gear.

STEPHEN...If you are going to say stuff like that...let's see you and Fennelly and Cummings slam these jerks in the papers...Heat is needed on this coaching staff. New York media style heat. Not sissy Tampa style.

How many yards and points did the Broncos D give up per game? How many have they given up now?

Let's be blunt, Tampa Bay still wins despite of its offense, not because of it.

I tell you right now, the offensive line took a huge step back from their progress. They look pathetic. It doesn't help with the play calling too. I always hat the short yard HB toss so the HB has to get 7 yards instead of 2. With the line blocking as bad as they are, stick to the basics man.

Hah. I hope the seats at the Ray Jay are empty next week. Serve 'em right for bad offense. 7 years running! Come see it! Come one Come all! A circus of clowns on offense..dinkin' and dunkin'!!!

Luke McCown next week folks? You can see why Garcia is benched and did not get a contract extension. Yes Gruden is afraid of his qbs, all of them.

Dexter Jackson is going to cause me to have to buy Prilosec OTC.

If GRUDEN is paying any attention to the Dnever OFFENSE, he'll realize he's not in Shanahans class. Then maybe he'll gracefully resign.

Dr. Dexter & Mr. Jackson. Come on Dex, we've soon the good side of you. We want to see it again.

What a great draft pick in the second round. Out of all the WRs in the second he is worst. Why at a crucial part of the game he is back there???? What a wast of a great defensce. Kiffen is this teams best coach !!!!!!!

I meant seen

Would it be too much to ask to get some insightful commentary instead of whining? Who is losing the game for us? What do they plan on doing to correct it in the last 7 minutes?

Take me out to the BALL GAME. Take me out to the BALL Game. Buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks. I don't care if they eever come back.

And if D-Jax doesn't give me heartburn, then Trueblood will

Case in point. ^^

Pathetic. Gruden is losing the game for us and there is no plan to change it because he is in charge. Pathetic I say. 9-7 is what I predicted and I dont go against that yet.

Stephen? Some help please? Why did they change QB's? Griese was 8/11 for 88....?

Sorry... 13/19

It's not sissy style Tampa heat. It's the humidity.

Hey guys, we need your support. Come on over here http://blogs.tampabay.com/rays/2008/10/american-leag-1.html#more

Jason he got hurt. Griese is out with a shoulder injury and he completed his passes to RB's in the flats.

Time to open it up and ATTACK!

I mean seriously, we're in the playoffs. You love us. You know, cowbell.

Thanks, Rob. This is the best we can do? I don't hold out much hope for the future if this is all we can muster against a suspect (at best) Denver defense....

I'm done with these guys. I'm going to the Rays blog.

I'm done with these guys. I'm going to the Rays blog.

I bet that they kick to Denver if there is more than two fifty left after they score.... any takers?

Yah! Here we go again! Plenty of time for one more score!

Plenty of time for 1 more score.

OK D. You know what to do. Business as usual.

What...no onside kick!!!

They are done. Why would you kick to them with 2 minutes left? I just don't understand it.... I mean, that's GENIUS! Why didn't I think of that??? That is plenty of time for a 3 and out against this D, plenty of time for Jackson to take a dive at the 4 and march 96 yards is, what, a little over 30 seconds????

How ironic!! the 31st rated defesen against the pass and the bucs throw almost the entire drive. Gruden is an offense genius!!

Time for the DEFENSE to step up.

Gutsy call by Shanahan. Smart move by the TE to stay in bounds

Game over. Why didnt we kick the onside again?

Brilliant PLAY CALLING by Gruden. OK, so I'm being somewhat SARCASTIC.

Well, let the QB controversy begin!

I say Jeff Garcia should start next week, no question.

Sounds like they completely deserved to lose this game.... better do something new on offense or this is going to be a looooooooooonnnngggg season!

I posted earlier that #8 missing Stephens in the endzone on the first quarter might be the difference. Three point loss.
They better find a qb for the first place Panthers next week who will stop teh run.
Someone from Denver should give Trueblood a game ball. He was great for them.

I say let Jon Gruden QB next week so he can see first hand how pathetic his play calling is.

At least the TORTURE of watching this GAME is over. There's always next weeks BDSM session to look forward too.

Jon THANKS for the great play calling. You out do yourself each week.

Note to Jon Gruden: The Kansas City Chiefs put up 30+ against Denver last week. Just sayin... So much for that #7 ranked offense against one of the worst defenses.

only an idiot doesn't ONSIDE there.

Terrible game plan, they went in afraid and it showed. Bad play calling!

I have a dream that one day our offense will make 10 yard + throws

Perhaps we could use Barber on offense as he sure as hades can't cover anyone on defense. He can disguise himself with cover 2 or zone but one on one he gets toasted everytime. I even spotted him high fiving a receiver who just toasted him and laughing about it.Ronde should call it quits without further embarrassment. So, with this offense sucking and the defense getting tired and not scoring today, it is a recipe for a loss and thats what happened. Garcia does give you a much better shot at winning on a consistent basis, if he WANTS to play..

Offense - SUCKED, SUCKED, SUCKED; DEFENSE- SUCKED, SUCKED, SUCKED; SPECIAL TEAMS- SUCKED, SUCKED, SUCKED; JOHN GRUDEN'S PLAY CALLING- REALLY SUCKED. Hey guys, when you go to play in a different house, how about showing a bit of enthusiasim instead of the old ho hum crap. I wish I had a job that paid me as well to play really crappy and still be able to still have a job and go to work on Monday. Hey, here is an idea, let's cut the playbook in half so at least a 5th grader could run it and at least you may have a chance, but then again you haven't played many 5th graders lately have you? Right now i would bet on the school kids.

waste of 2nd round pick on dexter jackson...instead of getting desean jackson...i think they got confused on draft day.

offense is embarrassing and defense is not where they were last year.

Where to begin. Griese played like he was afraid to throw the ball more than 8 yards and risk an interception--which he was. That allowed Denver's D' to crowd the box and tee off--no worry about a deep ball. Garcia played much better and shoul be our starting Qb no matter Griese's health--at least until the master gruden fianlly decides to prepare a youn QB to run the team for 10 years like Cutler-Romo-Campbell-Rivers etc. Why not use a 2d round pick on a future QB instead of a wasted pick on a Div.II player who never fielded punts in college and cannot do it in the NFL --like.....Dexter Jackson??--that kid is awful! it does not work using old QB re-treads from other teams -eg KC.

Finally, with Denvers' D' pursuing like crazy, why didn't the genius call on mis-direction, screen, bootleg etc?? Especially after Garcia went in.

Our offense is dreadful

we need a new playmaker like roy willaims

And John Gruden is SO CONSERVATIVE!!!! HIS OFFENSIVE PLAY CALLING IS SO BAD

Gruden has to realize this team's identity. THE BUCS ARE A RUNNING TEAM. We run the ball, play tough defense, and should take an occasional shot down the field. That is it in a nutshell. That is how this team can win. Our O-line are strong run blockers, and our defense is by far the strongest unit we have. The 5 yard dig routes and short crosses are tough to watch. We should have pounded the Broncos with the running game, they were going to wilt. You could see it. We gashed them in the 1st quarter. First time we have done that in awhile.

Now before everyone loses their minds about the Bucs falling in Denver, please remember it is a road loss to a team who has the best home win percentage in recent memory. Tampa Bay, for some unknown reason, continually lays an egg whenever they go West. Aside from the Super Bowl, the Bucs have lost to some really mediocre teams in road AFC and NFC West matchups. Its always an ugly, sloppy game.

A win Sunday vs. Carolina will cure all of this. Its a tough assignment, but it can be done. Just run it.

DESEAN JACKSON WAS OFF THE BOARD WHEN DEX WAS PICKED!!! STOP BITCHING ABOUT IT, DESEAN WAS GONE!!!

I HEARD A REPORT FRO CBSSPORTSLINE THAT SAYS THE LIONS ARE SHOPPING ROY WILlaims I think we should go after him

Jeez...I must have missed where they reported the start of the apocalypse. We'll be fine. We weren't going 15-1 this year.

One good thing to come out of this game: We found the excuse we needed to get Garcia back as the starter. I knew it was going to cost us a game to go from Griese to Garcia, so it may as well be an interconference game that isn't as important as an NFC South game.

As for those screaming for the onsides kick: hindsight is 20/20, eh? The Bucs still had three timeouts! Gruden didn't make the mistake, the defense did by allowing the offense to run out the clock!

Anyway, I'm still optimistic. We better man up for Carolina next week. I think we will.

Someone remind me why the Bucs drafted Dexter Jackson. Could it be they thought they had drafted DeSean Jackson??

Hey hey hey, we're the suck-a-neers! Time to go back to the creamsicle disgrace of a franchise, we suck, no QB, no offense, fail, fail, FAIL!!!! Bring back gay @ss Bucco Bruce...

What is the story on Barrett Ruud? He is the last guy we can afford to lose.

Your right why did we get dexter instead of desaun

someone please remind idiot "idiots" that we could got desean if we had traded up. so stop being an idiot idiots.

No disgrace losing in Denver. A few plays here or there & the outcome could have been reversed. The obvious absence of Joey Galloway or any speed at the receiver spot is making it difficult to use the whole play book. The deep routes are there but nobody can get open. Might be time to send the second round draft pick out to stretch the D. If he can catch it, all the better. Winning next week would put the Bucs back in first place.

DESEAN JACKSON WAS OFF THE BOARD WHEN DEX WAS PICKED!!! STOP BITCHING ABOUT IT, DESEAN WAS GONE!!!

Posted by: Idiots | October 05, 2008 at 08:05 PM

Yeah, cuz trading up is just that easy...

Hello all... Kinda busy writing in the press box here in Denver, but see the post i just added to the main blog page to get an update on the injuries (Griese, Ruud).

oh yea...i forgot its easy for other teams but not for bucs ...right idiots.

idiots..you sound just like your name.
