Dominik on the radar for the Chiefs GM position

Bucs pro personnel director Mark Dominik is a candidate for the Chiefs general manager position. The talks actually began informally several weeks ago, shortly after Carl Peterson resigned.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt remembers Dominik when he began his NFL career as a scouting intern in 1994. He was hired the next season by the Bucs for a position in their scouting department and has been promoted steadily through the ranks.

The Chiefs would like to hire a GM before deciding what to do with coach Herm Edwards, who is twisting in the wind with one year remaining on his contract. The hiring of the 37-year-old Dominik may afford Edwards another season to get it right.

But Dominik has to wait his turn. The Chiefs are also interested in Patriots executive Scott Pioli, Colts vice president of football operations Chris Polian and Chargers director of player personnel Jimmy Raye, according to NFL.com.

Dominik's contract is set to expire in May. The 43-year-old Hunt wants to go with a younger GM and Dominik is more than ready to assume those duties with some NFL team. It won't happen in Tampa Bay as long as Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen are in power. He's watched Jerry Angelo and Tim Ruskell become general managers of the Bears and Seahawks, respectively, and has seen Ruston Webster and John Idzik promoted to executive positions with other teams.

Dominik has a great eye for talent and was credited with acquiring players like Donald Penn, Antonio  Bryant and Jeff Faine, among many, many others through the years.

But Dominik will likely have to wait until Pioli makes a decision on his future before the picture ecomes more clear in Kansas City.

OK, this is interesting Rick. You mention a couple of free agents. What about his drafting record? Did he evaluate college talent? Or is that not part of his job?

Well, I want to know is if we are so mediocre(behind the scenes and coaching) why are all these guys so wanted?

OAR, according to ProFootballTalk, Mark is from Kansas. Outside of KC, no one else is looking at him. And like you, I wonder why anyone would want these guys. My guess--Mark's contract expires and has to find a new gig because GruAllen want to promote someone else. So his agent has probably been calling teams with GM openings to let them know he is available.

Would we be better off replacing Allen with this guy?

Is it just me, or should a prospective GM with a Pro Personnel background at a minimum be able to say they scouted and drafted a couple of Pro-bowlers to get a Franchise leading promotion?

Why would they want OUR talent evaluator? Go for it K.C.!

I'm with everyone else on this one. I just don't get it. I mean you take a look at the NFL and you see so many coaches who started here with the Bucs. Then we have scouts getting looked at for GM positions and we cant get out of the first round of the playoffs or even get in this year. What I think is funny is KC will look at a scout below Bruce Allen, but Allen has not come up in any GM conversation. I know this is Gruden's buddy, but it might be time that we take a real good look at our GM! Every team that had high expectations and did not perform said goodbye to a coach or exec. it's time we put some guys on the hot seat.

I may get harangued for this, but I am not sold on the "Get rid of Gruden idea," although 08 is showing me why so many are against him. But I have not liked Allen from the beginning. At the time he came on board, we kept on picking up other Raiders players and what not. None of them worked out! Perhaps Allen (and Gruden - not to leave out you Gruden haters) should move on as well.

Robert, according to Bucs site, Bruce Allen is the General Manager.

So he can't be interviewed by a different team for the same position.

We picked up Raider cast offs because they were all we could afford. McKay had totally destroyed the salary cap.

Now that we've got the money, who has been available? No one.

Robert, you ask why Allen hasn't been mentioned in GM conversations, its because Allen isn't on the street. GMs don't change teams unless they quit or are fired (like McKay). Allen hasn't quit or been fired, so, no one is talking about him.

No one is talking about Parcells either.

Rick,

I don't get it. In this blog you praise Dominik for his eye for talent, in your articles last week you blasted the Bucs for being lousy in free agency. My guess is Dominik does have a good eye for talent, but if you can take a shot at the Bucs front office in general, that's a little easier. The fact that Kansas City wants our personnel director should at least hint to people that the Bucs are respected for their free agency work.

Also, if talks began informally with the Chiefs several weeks ago, couldn't the Bucs file tampering charges since Dominik is under contract?

You guys are totally correct. The point I'm trying to get across is you hear guys being talked about and how they are good at what they do or are someones protege. So they end up with interviews. When you hear this with the bucs, it's not Gruden guys or Allen guys, it's Kiffin guys! With the bucs we have all of these defensive coaches going other places and getting better jobs(Kiffin's guys) Here is my question, which I have my own opinion, but do you all think that the Glazers should have pushed real hard to make Kiffin the head coach of this team a long time ago? Do you think that the Glazers have caused as many problems with this team as Gruden and Allen? (Being too tied up with Manchester United)

Robert, you should do a little research coaches under Gruden(offense) have gone on to better jobs. Kyle Shanhan(Mike's son), Art Valero, Ron Middleton, and Jon Shoop. So to say none of Gruden or Allens coaches have gone on is wrong. No I do not think they should have made Kiffin headcoach(I don't think he wanted it, remember he turned down tht position with the 49'ers several years ago).

OAR, these coaches you just named under Gruden are nobody... I dont care if the dude is the son of Shanhan. That's like saying we should have held on to SIMMS because of who his old man is.. These coaches under Gruden may have new jobs, but are not doing anything special. About the head coach gig... Would you jump ship to coach the 49'ers who have done nothing since the 90's and have horrible ownership now. That was a smart move. Do you honestly think if the BUCS came to him and offered him the job, in the town where he started the Tampa 2 he would have said no.. I don't think he would have. Anyway, I am not against Gruden and think he is our guy. I just think Gruden has some issues he needs to work on as well as some of our players. I am happy that this was our best year offensively. OAR, what is the biggest thing you want to see happen with next season? I like your opinions and you are knowledgeable. I would personally like to see Gruden start to really get serious with developing a young QB. Whether it be Johnson or through the draft. I also think we need to BEEF up our interior D Line.

I mean offensively under Gruden
