Haynesworth: Bucs cutting Brooks didn't 'help'
Titans free agent defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth said he considered signing with the Bucs and liked coach Raheem Morris. But he indicated cutting five veterans, including linebacker Derrick Brooks, the day before the signing period didn't help matters.
"Yeah, it was a few things we looked at,'' Haynesworth told Sporting News Radio. "You couldn't really say that, but cutting a bunch of those guys and having a bunch of new starters didn't help the situation any. I felt comfortable with Raheem. He seemed to be a good person and he's going to be a good coach, and I thought they had a lot of upside. I guess they wanted to have that fresh new look and that's what they went for. It didn't really scare me off, but it didn't really help the situation.''

Brutal. Like throwing gas on the fire.

JUST LIKE PUTTING BOOTS TO US WHEN WE ARE DOWN

Duh.
What else would anyone think? You're rebuilding. Who wants to go through that torture.

Read between the lines.....
Posted by: chrisslooter | March 02, 2009 at 06:24 PM
hahaha... The Bucs threw themselves under the bus with that one. It was clear that dumping so many reputable players as they did was going to create a backlash with other players around the league. I wouldn't be surprised if those five guys are tag teaming every player reputed to be considering coming here and implored them not to come here. (Imagine if guys like Dunn or Brooks call you up and say such things. That has to have some level of influence)
As I posted a couple days ago, why didn't the Bucs at least hang on to those players until a week or two in the FA signing period? The only thing I can think of is that there must have been roster bonuses that kicked in on March 1st, so by releasing them when the team did, the Glazers saved themselves from having to pay out any cash... That would make sense, given the Bucs' sudden aversion to paying signing bonuses.
Mr Stroud or Mr Holder... Can you guys PLEASE do some research into this stuff and do an article about it? I would do it myself, but I don't have the resources... The website I run is about architecture, not sports.

Isn't it just great when a "PLAN" comes together? Yikes!
Posted by: Harvey Arndt | March 02, 2009 at 06:34 PM
Did u expect any less. He can say what he wants, but he was going for whoever was paying more and that was the Skins. Once again a player with nothing but good to say about Morris. Every player seems to love this guy. I think that the people who are bashing him should stop. The beef should be with ownership and FO. Do we honestly think it was Morris and Dominik that made the decision to cut those vets?? NO NO NO.. That came from the Glazer fam guranteed!!! Anyway, I think Morris is going to be a great coach and Albert we are not missing you and your 100mil contract. I'm going to laugh when this guy is hurt by the 5th game this season. I'm saying it right here. Haynesworth doesn't play 12 games next year!
Posted by: Robert | March 02, 2009 at 06:34 PM
Really people, this is our dream!! We, as bloggers, have a chance to make the team at the open tryouts. This is our dream, our time. I am going jogging, and I am going to play Madden tonight to hone my skills. *GASP* I really have a shot at making the team...
Posted by: chrisslooter | March 02, 2009 at 06:35 PM
That's what I thought
Posted by: Cinemike | March 02, 2009 at 06:38 PM
I too think that Morris is probably going to be a great coach. I'm not worried about that at all. But I agree, there is definitely something deeper happening here. I'm holding onto hope that you guys are wrong about the Glazers, but my optimism is fading fast...
Posted by: Cinemike | March 02, 2009 at 06:45 PM
I would agree to that Robert.. I don't think having a young and relatively inexperienced coach (or GM) is the problem here. The Glazers are increasingly looking like the weak link in this franchise. It's a shame too, because they seemed like they were genuinely dedicated to this team's longterm success when they bought it... The NFL should have never overridden their own rule about owners holding multiple sports franchises, so that the Glazers could buy manU and still keep the Bucs.
Posted by: Jasonhouse | March 02, 2009 at 06:47 PM
And you kool aid drinkers say I'm wrong? I said this all weekend... we can't get quality FA's because of douche bags Mo-ron-ik wonder twins and their classless cluelessness.
Posted by: Dave | March 02, 2009 at 06:49 PM
Hmm i wonder what he thought of the Redskins cutting Marcus Washington, Shawn Springs, Taylor today just to make room for him and his 2 Ton Contract. This i agree probably didn't help the situation but things are what they are. Haynesworth's biggest concern was him becoming the highest payed Defensive player not going to a better team or younger team. Jim Zorn has one full yr of head coaching experience over Raheem & no Zorn was never a coordinator before he got the job.
Posted by: D Block | March 02, 2009 at 07:03 PM
Has it occurred to any of the nay-sayers that the ones cut were given a jump-start to be picked up in FA?
Saturday was the 28th of Feb, so your comment about the 3/1 bonus is preposterous.
I will hold Brooks forever in my own personal ring of honor, but he stayed one year too long.
The very drive that made him great kept him trying for too long. I hate to say it, but my most recent memory of him is limping down the field, injured, and unable to fulfill his own expectations of himself.
Lighten up on the Boyz in management. I think this team has turned around to a positive direction.
Posted by: Duffiedawg | March 02, 2009 at 07:04 PM
The money offered was the same. The Bucs were not outbid. From Fat Al's mouth.
"really think so, that was the one thing looking into it, because we did have both the same money on the table and everybody knows that one was from Tampa. I looked at the roster of the Redskins and looked at the roster of the Bucs and they cut a lot of starters, I mean they were older guys, but they cut five starters the day before. "
Posted by: aj | March 02, 2009 at 07:05 PM
don't cry about not signing this guy...he wouldn't have put the bucs in the superbowl anytime soon. when the bucs are a good team again this guy will be pretty old haha...so not worth it.
Posted by: donthate | March 02, 2009 at 07:07 PM
Come on Albert, you know that had nothing to do with it at all!You just left a Titan squad that have several Pro-Bowl players on its defense and was the Number # 1 in the AFC last season okay! Cutting Brooks had nothing to do with your decision, it was all about MONEY....
Posted by: Greg285 | March 02, 2009 at 07:09 PM
Thanx Greg!!!!!!!We all Agree
Posted by: D Block | March 02, 2009 at 07:12 PM
I enjoy reading this blog everyday because it amuses how some people are actually praises Gruden and Allen nowadays! Give me a break okay? If they were still in charge, the Bucs would have signed Jon Kitna instead of trying to acquire Jay Cutler! The Bucs are heading in the right direction and all those fake supporters, I hope you stick to your words and not renew your season tickets because there are several Buc fans would who love to get your seats!! The Bucs were an old team the past several years and those players did not get the job done on the field okay? We deal with this everyday in our real lives on our jobs, perform or your gone!! Brooks and the other 4 players just joined the real world that we live in every single day….
Posted by: Greg285 | March 02, 2009 at 07:20 PM
THANK YOU GREG...finally someone gets it!! If certain guys are drafted this team might actually be good in a couple years and then the bandwagon fans come back haha. There is no use in signing average players in free agency for BIG money...how are the skins doing with that???? The Bucs did try to get Cutler and would have put a lot of smiles on the faces of Bucs fans but ask Billy B why that did not happen!?!? Maybe another trade will be proposed that is unexpected...clearly they don't believe in these "average" greedy free agents.
Posted by: donthate | March 02, 2009 at 07:30 PM
Right Greg. A guy like Koutouvides will really fill the Brooks/June void famously!
Posted by: Dave | March 02, 2009 at 07:31 PM
donthate... how is trading away all your draft picks going to help rebuild?
Posted by: Dave | March 02, 2009 at 07:31 PM
Your kidding me right? Brooks is a Hall of Famer, 1st ballot no doubt! No comparison there, however, The Great Bill Walsh once said that it's better to get rid of a guy a year or two earlier than a year or two late! Brooks did an excellent job here, but his play was slipping (It happens, I believe its called 'Old Age')Cato June? What has he done since he signed? How many Pro Bowls? If the new regime has a system, you can put players into that system and it will still work! Coach Morris has taken due notice how Coach Tomlin and the Steelers handle business up there in Pittsburgh as they seem to just plug in Linebackers into their system every other season and that defense keeps on performing...How many people heard of James Harrison before the last 2 season? Exactly my point....
Posted by: Greg285 | March 02, 2009 at 07:40 PM
Comments like that from Haynesworth are a joke. The Redskins cut Taylor who is also older and the end of the rope among others (albeit after he signed). Don't justify it to yourself or anyone else. It's about money - for once can a player just flippin' say it!
PS - Quit knockin' the new regime. I am not saying I am a fan of theirs, but they did try to get Haynesworth, were involved in potentially getting Cutler which would have been larceny for any draft pick(s), and prevented Clayton who was buried under Gruden from getting away. It's early, give it time, wow.
Posted by: Canada Ken | March 02, 2009 at 07:54 PM
Kouts is a special teamer who will not be competing for a starting job. He isn't replacing anyone besides Hayes
Posted by: D Block | March 02, 2009 at 08:01 PM
I can't believe guys are on here dissing #55. The guy played hurt last year, maybe he shouldn't of...but that was up to Kiffin to decide whether or not he should be in there. And as far as age being a factor in the those cuts...Raheem and Dominik adamently denied that at their press conference, "Just a different direction," is the only answer they would give for the decisions.
I don't have a problem with cutting some older players and bringing in some young guys. But I think this is more about a 2 or 3 year building phase and going cheap. The Glazers don't want to spend the money so they have told these guys to spend lightly and look to the future by adding a bunch of you guys.
I'm not ok with that, I want to win now...or at least know we are trying to! We already proved we were once the laughing stock of the NFL, we don't need to prove it again!!!
Posted by: Garick | March 02, 2009 at 08:02 PM
sorry, I meant "young guys" not "you guys"
Posted by: Garick | March 02, 2009 at 08:03 PM
Canada, it's not about what they tried to do or almost did... it that thay've done nothing but piss everyone off.
Posted by: Dave | March 02, 2009 at 08:05 PM
Darth Glazer is mad that Detroit stole our winless season claim. We now will be the first team to have consecutive winless seasons! Take that, NFL!
Posted by: Dave | March 02, 2009 at 08:06 PM
Is it me or is "dv7401" one of the most negative bloggers here. The Lions could use more fans or you can hop on the Cardinals band wagon. I'm pretty sure you picked them to go to the Super Bowl.
Posted by: D Block | March 02, 2009 at 08:18 PM
Everyone isn't pissed, we are a little. But you can't call for there heads and the team hasn't played a game.
Posted by: D Block | March 02, 2009 at 08:19 PM
Brooks was finished, Galloway stayed hurt, Dunn wasn't the answer, Hilliard was old. June i have some questions about that one, he hasn't overwhelmed but he was solid.

stupid is as stupid does............

This is like another Obama/Biden administration - just a bunch of bad decisions! I am totally disappointed with free agency!
Posted by: Jesse | March 02, 2009 at 08:31 PM
Anybody who thinks that we are in better shape than with Gruden is a complete moron. Thanks Glazers for really sticking it to the fan base. We are so very appreciative of how hard you are working at completely imploding our once proud franchise. Please all of you go jump off the Skyway soon before we lose all of our good players. We want our coach back!
Posted by: Kurt | March 02, 2009 at 08:40 PM
I guess you thought the economy was doing great & we should bring back BUSH also
Posted by: D Block | March 02, 2009 at 08:40 PM
Tomlin and Morris act nothing alike, so besides them both being young and black, I don't see the comparison. Tomlin carries himself with dignity and class; Morris acts like, well...not so much.
Posted by: Kurt | March 02, 2009 at 08:45 PM
It's just my opionion, but I think Brooks was just hurt last year and that's he didn't look so good in spots. I think if he is healthy next year, he will do what Lynch did and prove a lot of people wrong. I mean seriously, they kept Ronde and cut Brooks. If anything, I would think that Ronde is the one that should have been cut.
Posted by: Garick | March 02, 2009 at 08:46 PM
DV7, you r one negative person. Since you started blogging like a week ago all u have done is wine like a girl about everything. Forget about the glazer's.. it's the guys who are going to be suiting up that I care about and they need our support!

We aren't even a week in to FA and you all are just sure that it's over. The Glazers can just fire everybody and lock the doors, what's the point, right? They can just have a 31 team league next year and everybody that plays the Bucs gets an automatic win. One month into the new staffs tenure and your calling them names and I am thinking maybe therapy would be a good idea. Most of you have some real issues with anger management. You all could go over to One Buc and complain that the parking spaces are too small, or the bushes needed trimming. Yeah, lets just get mad, because there isn't any value in an NFL team that doesn't do it your way. Right? S-T-U-P-I-D!
Posted by: Valrico Rick | March 02, 2009 at 09:27 PM
The Plan...
Raheem:
Mon-ick we got a plan?
Dominick:
Rah-mo I don't really know(???). I have an idea though, let's tell the media we're working to the plan. We don't have to have a plan per se. As long as they believe we have a plan. Then anything positive or negative that happens. We can say it's a part of the plan.
Raheem:
I like it!!! We can turn the world upside down and they'll always believe it's a part of the plan. Alright!!!

Hope the media communicates to Dim-wit and Dim-witty: Brooks was well respected by all players throughout the league.
Thanks for sharing intelligence IQ.
Posted by: Drew | March 02, 2009 at 09:48 PM
Lmao we signed Derrick Ward, i guess we won't be looking at RB in the 1st rd. Caddy nor Graham will be ready to go by the start of training camp this was a good move. This can be a pretty good three headed monster once the others return healthy. Some of you will continue to despise the new regime, GruAllen probably would have went for Shaun Alexander lol.
Posted by: D Block | March 02, 2009 at 10:07 PM
Really starting to think that the Glazers want to kill off the fan base and re-locate somewhere else. Is there any other reasonable explanation? Other that Dim-wit is a dumb-d1ck?
