Raheem Morris warns of intense training camp for Bucs

Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris has maintained from Day 1 he wants a team that possesses toughness. Now he's making it clear he will find out who does and doesn't have it.

Morris said the Bucs will hold seven fewer training-camp practices this fall but they will conduct more workouts in full and partial pads than under former coach Jon Gruden.

The former regime of Gruden and his staff scaled back the workload in training camp for many players, particularly veterans. Morris clearly has other intentions.

"We'll hopefully get more enthusiastic practices," he said. "We'll have more juice. We'll have more energy. We'll see more physical, tough acts being displayed on the football field. We'll be in pads. It'll be a little bit different."

Part of Morris' goal in holding more physical practices is to work on basics like tackling, a skill that was lacking late last season when the Bucs collapsed with four straight losses to close out '08.

It's an ambitious approach Morris is taking and one that comes with some inherent risks, but he seems steadfast in his plans. As a result, players had better be in excellent shape when they report on July 31.

The guys up front on defense need to work on their conditioning. They completely ran out of gas at the end of the season.

I predict E. Mack starts at CB ahead of Ronde Barber.

Robert

Tom, I agree on the Mack comment and if we are right ole REF will have to pay up. I also love what Moris is ding. I love the paintball to end Mini- Camp. That kind of stuff can really bring the guys together. It kind of reminds me of how Maddon makes the guys dress up for the road trips. Morris is going to make these guys go out in training camp and really earn their jobs. No sense of entitlement I think will be great for this team. I know a bunch of people think this is going to be a horrible year, but I think this team wil go 8-8 or atleast 7-9 and if that happens after all the changes the franchise has went through it will be a good year.

D Block

Hey fellow fans i've been MIA for a bit but reading here and there and i like what i see from the team and coaching staff. It would be very difficult to believe that they wouldn't have an intense training camp formed around the basics like tackling and securing the ball. Will players get banged up yes, but will they get better YES! You play like you practice for the most pt. As far as predictions go i see some of you are shouting out Mack! I said this months ago lol. But from what i heard Ronde has looked very good in the new scheme of things. But i also see some predictions of a loosing record WON'T HAPPEN!! Too many threats on offense this year i predict at least 24 points a game.

D Block

Oh yeah i predict 10-6 Lol, i'm joking because i don't know what may happen. It all depends on the first 4 games if we have a winning record after that and run the ball well the BUCS will be a force in this years season period

OAR

Dblock, glad to see your back. Anyway do you really think that 1.4 points a game more than they did last year is gonna make this team better? Although if they go 8-8 or 9-7(like last year) it won't be a losing season, which as you say "WON'T HAPPEN".
Myself, I hope they can pull off 8-8 or 9-7(again), but Im a realist too.

Tom

In our defensive glory days, we were a physical team, regardless of the fact that we were also Cover 2. We had "slobber knockers" like Lynch, Brooks and Sapp. Even the CBs were physical up front. They tackled well and pushed the WRs to the middle of the field into the LBs.

In the past few years, I think we lost that physical play on defense. Other than Philips, is there one other guy that strikes fear into the opponent? We have Gaines who doubles as a human pinball.

Where's the Slobber Knockers??!!

OAR

Tom, Tanard's a pretty good slob-knocker.
BTW I just think it's funny how the offense is suposedely getting better, when that is not the reason for the let down last year.

Tom

OAR, I love Tanard Jackson. What a great draft pick! I'll never forget the snot jarring hit on Dallas Clark! However, I'm not sure if teams fear him just yet. I also think Sabby has the potential also.

I agree with you that the defense is what let us down last year. Although, our red zone offense was pretty poor also. So far, I like the direction of the team. I like the zone blocking, down hill style running. I like the man up, aggressive style defense.

I'm not a huge fan of the back pedaling style of defense we've been playing. Don't get me wrong, the Cover 2 works great if you have the personnel like we did in the day.

OAR

Tom, don't get me wrong our offense definitely wasn't great but did put up 22.6 points a game last year. That's a winnable score for sure. As Sapp used to say "Give us(the defense) 17 points and we'll win."
Also agree that teams might not fear Tanard, yet and that Sabby has(and must step up and bring it) potential.

THE GREAT

ITS A GREAT THING THAT TEAMS DONT FEAR TANARD JACKSON, WHICH MEANS THEY WILL KEEP THROWING TO HIS SIDE, WHICH MEANS MORE PICKS, HARD HITS AND MOST OF ALL TURNOVERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO BUCS

OAR

Outside the box: Kyle Orton beats out Chris Simms as starter in Denver! Funny stuff!

Tom

OAR that's too funny. I love Simms' heart. He's a tough SOB. But he is about the most immobile QB that has ever played the game. I think he was the only QB that didn't run for a first down the year he started. He has terrible pocket presence. And, he can't find a passing lane. It just seems like he doesn't know what's going on around him.

Str8BucIn

This is a much needed change for our Bucs. Everyone has been very critical of Raheem and Mark, but everyone seems to like what they've been hearing. I have had the previledge of seeing a couple of practices and the team will be fine. It will be better than what we've see from Gruden/Allen. The youth shows in terms of speed and quickness. The pace is blissering and it will help us during the season where all of our home games are at 1 PM. We will wear teams out with our new approach. 10 and 6 is not be unrealistic at all. We will be very competitive this season, so strip in and get ready for a great ride. Remember the last time we had a coaching change we held a trophy up at the end of the season. Let's hope lightning strikes again.

DR

This blog is funny. It's funny that Simms lost a starting spot to Orton? Is Simms superman or something? An average at best QB is supposed to come off a two year lay off and win a spoy. Like SNL, Really!?!?
I'm sadly predicting the Bucs to go 3-13. However, this 3-13 bucs team will be better than the bucs of past. If the Bucs were to win 9 games this year, according to last year, they would win far more games against winning opponents in years past.
My point is, the Bucs don't have a favorable division or favorable schedule like in past years. This same team with a good offensive coordinator could have won 11 games two years ago or more. Weak schedules usually are exploited in first round home losses. That is the negative effect on the four division set up. Grudumb benefited from it.

DR

I agree Tom, Barber will be the nickel back for the Bucs. He may pull a retirement gig before that happens though.

OAR

Spin-DR, glad to see your sense of humor is infavor of SNL, probally why you have none.
Years past, favorable schedules, exploited by 1st round home loses, blah, blah, blah, blah, BLAH!
How about dem Cowgirls of yours? How are they doing this off season? They get those over-weight fatboy issues resolved? They still bringing back Pacman? They gonna build any more facilities using real engineers this time? Romo get his weight down yet? Jerry Jones still lying to his players? Will cutting T.O. help Romo become a better leader(btw lame excuse Jones uses on this one)?

Kurt

That's funny DR. Now, we have a hard schedule compared to year's past! That's just your inability to get to the truth: this team won't be as good as when Gruden was coach, period. We were 40 million under the cap last year and still pulled off a winning record. Name another team to come close to that feat. BTW, the defense let us down last year. Hopefully, Raheem is a golden child, but anybody with any sense realizes he was part of the problem last year; not solution. Just sayin...

D Block

Hey fans i was a lil busy, but why does the schedule matter so much all of a sudden nobody is playing FSU lol. Yes the schedule sucks but it has got to be played though. The offense is a lot better, the defense did have problems down the stretch but it was due to the lack of offense. The D would force 3 and out and the offense would go 3 and punt or 2 and turnover. Nobodies defense can last forever the d has a little bit of the blame but the last 5 games our starting Defensive Tackles where banged up or out and Gruden refused to dress more then 7 D lineman. Don't believe me look it up.

OAR

Dblock, I disagree with your, "The offense is a lot better, the defense did have problems down the stretch but it was due to the lack of offense. The D would force 3 and out and the offense would go 3 and punt or 2 and turnover." The d would go 3 and out? Out of the last for games(we were 9-3) I can agree with the Atlanta game needing more offense, but the other ones Carolina(remember those huge runs the d allowed), Kansas City(collapse at the end; Sporales screen/run), and Oakland(M Bush ran over us 177 yds; 67 on one run that sealed that game) we did score 23, 24, and 24 points(wow, the average you predicted for this new offense). You score 24 and that's winnable, unless the d lets you down.
