Buccaneers trade Gaines Adams for '10 second round pick

The Bucs have traded DE Gaines Adams to the Bears for a 2010 second round, the team has confirmed.

Adams has been under immense pressure to step up his performance after two disappointing seasons. He has one sack this season and hasn't been the force coaches hoped he would be.

His destination isn't a total surprise. The Bears employ defensive line coach Rod Marinelli who, as head coach of the Lions, was enamored with Adams and strongly considered drafting him. The Lions wound up picking WR Calvin Johnson second overall.

Adams was the fourth overall pick that year, 2007, out of Clemson. Now, the team recovers what could be a late second-rounder for him. With the NFL's trade deadline looming, the Bucs apparently decided to cut their losses with Adams and continue acquiring picks that coach Raheem Morris and GM Mark Dominik can use to continue the rebuilding process.

The Bucs envisioned Adams filling the shoes of former pass rush specialist Simeon Rice, but Adams' development proved slow. He had 6 sacks as a rookie and 6.5 last season. Entering this season, Morris said publicly Adams would not be viewed as a success in 2009 unless he had a double-digit sack season.

The move likely propels Stylez White into the starting role at right defensive end. White has shown flashes this season, leading the team with 11 quarterback pressures. The Bucs also acquired DE Michael Bennett this week and could see rookie fourth-round pick Kyle Moore make his debut on Sunday against the Panthers.

XRAY

Ok now use this 2nd round pick and go get Aaron Kaumpman!!!!!

tb_buccaneers1978

Good luck with the bears im not going to hate on you gaines just wish we could go back and trade you for adrian peterson who was there at 4

DZ 55

its a good trade for the bears and gaines .marinelli will be a great coach for gaines. hope he does well. i was hoping he would get better for the bucs but he struggled ,maybe lost confidence. second round pick sounds good also. hope gaines has a good career.

Matt H

Highway Robbery.
Marinelli has lost his mind.

Do the Bears want Clayton as well for a 3rd so they don't even need to show up on the 1st day of the draft?

bobbyd

Yoink! Bears, you just got schooled.

Mac

Thank You Bears! Obviously they haven't watched any Buc games the last 2 years. Good luck Gaines.

DR

Good trade for the Bucs. They get rid of some garbage who should have never been drafted that high. He only had sacks against lower teams in college. His failure in the NFL was no surprise, especially when they discussed his leg strength as being a problem.

Valrico Rick

If Gaines Adams is able to play at an NFL level Marinelli will get it out of him. Who knows for sure, afterall, Rice showed flashes for the Cardinals, but they let him go as a free agent and he became a difference maker for the Bucs under Marinelli. I also like the idea of picking up another 3rd rounder or better for Clayton, and I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't been working on it since they picked up Figurs and are now carring 6 receivers. That seems a bit much for a team that needs more OL and DL depth!

John P

It's win-win for everyone, hopefully. Nothing against Adams, but he was a bust here and things were only getting worse.

A second round pick next year is tremendous considering we might have cut him anyway next season.

DR

Gaines Adams will show whether or not he can play in the NFL with a better defense in Chicago. I heard the Bears might play him at the DT position.

Duffiedawg

DAYH-UMN, have they suddenly become lucid at One Buccaneer Palace?
A bust is a bust is a bust. Adams has not shown anything, and has not followed recommendations to beef up. It has shown in his poor play.

DZ 55

i would laugh hard if gaines adams had 10+ sacks for the bears and they traded clayton and he had no drops.

OffBrand

When looking to the future, this trade makes a lot of sense. You recieve solid draft pick and and you free up even more cap space. It doesn't matter what this guy for another team, he didn't do anything for us. Overhaul 2010.

OffBrand

By the way, we have a young DE in Kyle Moore who can at least do what adams did for a fraction of the money....Great Trade

JH

I liked Adams, and I wish him the best. However, I like the fact that the organization is not going to waste any more time on a "project" DE and move on. In compiling all of these picks, we need a draft class like the one we had in 1995 when we were able to net Sapp and Brooks in the first round.

XRAY

Did You guys hear me???? Kaupman is sittin in GB and looks horrible and dosn't want to play outside backer....dont we need a legit pass rusher??? Hello....give them the second round pick and lets get a pass rusher..

Brandon

Valrico,
Rice showed flashes with the Cards? Didn't have something like 16.5 sacks one season with them?

Gaines Adams was a 6th year senior before he finally posted double digit sacks, he should have never been drafted that high. His college resume and workouts weren't any better than fellow 2007 draftee, Tim Crowder (and at least Crowder wasn't an older guy playing against kids like Adams was).

This pretty much cements the fact that I draft better than the Bucs in the past several years. I had my fingers crossed for Patrick WIllis that year and he has turned out pretty well.

The best part, other than the part of us fleecing the Bears's 2nd for a worthless bum, is that we can now look to get either a DE or DT in round 1. DT Suh or DE Dunlap/Hardy would all be great additions and now nobody will be standing in their way.

Brandon

XRAY,

STFU, if we're rebuidling, you rebuild with young players. Not a NFL middle-aged guy in the last year of his contract with a gimpy knee.

Go root for the friggin Packers like that fruitcake that cried and whined when we didn't draft/trade for/pick-up on waivers Brian Brohm (who still sucks, by the way).

Brandon

DR,

I know you're kidding, right? Adams at DE? He's too weak to play OLB in the 3-4 (not to mention, way too stupid).

Slamdunk

Nice trade for both teams and I hope Adams does well in Chicago.

I think the team made a mistake in drafting their franchise QB this year instead of selecting him this coming draft. We sure could have used a DL with our first round selection this year, and been in the same shape to draft one of the draft-eligible QBs in 2010 with the higher pick.

BucFandango

DR, good point. I always wondered why they never tried Gaines at D tackle. I know he is light weight, but they could have worked harder to bulk him up and he would look like Justin Tuck, except for his Giraffe neck. I hope he thrives under Marinelli, and a 2'nd round pick was a good deal for the Bucs. Well that's another jersey for the closet. My next Bucs Jersey will be a 00' with my name on the back, LOL. My closet is stuffed and Cadi is the only one still on the team. I'd like to get a JJ #11 but I'm afraid they'll trade him next week. I think maybe I should stick with my Brooks' jersey. It's timeless.... I hope my wife isn't planning a garage sale. Maybe I'll bust out the old Brown Paper Bag Sunday. Nah, not yet, I think we're going to win this one.

Tom

Wow! What a phenomenal deal for the Bucs.

Mark my words, Mark Dominic is very smart and planning to stockpile picks for the upcoming draft. This is the last uncapped year for rookies and should be filled with underclassmen talent trying to get a share of the shrinking pie. A second round pick could land you first round talent next year.

Great job Mark!

Scott

Wow,

When I first read the headline and saw that the Bucs traded Adams for a draft pick....I immediately thought fourth rounder probably. I am extremely pleased with a second round pick because I figured that he would simply be sent packing after this year anyway in free agency.

ValricoRick- as for us getting a third round pick out of Clayton, that would be a dream. I think that we could get a fifth tops. But, who knows, we just got a second for Gaines Adams, so miracles do happen.

DR

Tom, this is step one. Step two is the most important. You can have all the draft picks in the world, but if you can't evaluate talent, than they mean nothing. Look at the Chiefs the last few years. Hopefully, the Bucs are doing their homework and taking notes. If they end up witha top 3 pick, hopefully, they can trade down for more. The money involved scares teams away, but with Bradford and McCoy there, that should help get a trade since there are a lot of terrible QBs in the NFL right now.

Tom

DR, you're right. A lot rides on your scouting department. The Chiefs are one of the worst organizations in the NFL. It is unbelievable that Carl Peterson was in the NFL as long as he was.

This is the year that having lots of draft picks could be tremendous because of the talent level and uncapped rookie salaries still in effect. We can build a solid defense with the players in this draft alone.

bucfaninphx

I agree with DR- He could be better with some actual help from other players...here he had no one that teams needed to worry about like a Sapp or Rice to help him. We have decent ,hard working DL but thats as far as it goes. I would think Gaines would have flourished if he had some talent along the line. Good Luck, and thanks to the Bears for the 2nd round pick.

Tom

Anyone of you bloggers here think that Dominick is not going to be a good GM, haven't met the guy. This guy is as talented as they come. He has learned a great deal from two very good GMs that he has followed. He has a great eye for talent like Rich McKay and the great salary cap management of Bruce Allen.

Jay

I would actually be ok with picking up Simeon Rice again. Seriously! He already has more sacks in the UFL in one game than Gaines has had in five. If his shoulder hadn't gone out on him, I'm willing to bet we wouldn't have wasted a draft pick on Adams.

Steven

I never log in after hours but this occasion calls for it. Excellent value for this trade. Kudos to the Bucs. And if Marinelli can't light a fire under this guy, no one can. Many options now but I'll let the weekend happen before commenting on all of that. Go Bucs.

Tom

Not only is this a great move to unload an underachieving player and pick up a very high draft pick, but we just unloaded a very hefty salary. NO, THIS IS NOT A CHEAP MOVE BY THE GLAZERS! So don't even go there, dv7401.

BucFandango

I wish we had Rod Marinelli instead of Bates. I wish we had Mickey Mouse instead of Bates. Still this was a great move by Dominick. If the Bucs lose to Carolina which I don't think they will, I hope they fire Bates and put Joe Barry or Rich Bisaccia in charge of the defense. Even if Raheem takes on the DC duties, it's time to ditch this system that doesn't work.

Robert

What a GREAT, HUGE move! I have been saying 4 a while now that we need to stack as many picks as possible for this draft and we have started! I really think we will see a way better, much improved Bucs squad next year! I wont b suprised if this team makes a few more moves to try and gather some more picks!

Robert

Right now we are going to have a 1-5 pick, 33-38 pick, and a later 2nd round pick! I think Berry is the BEST defensive player in the draft and he plays a position we need. I think we should take Berry and then really start addressing the DL. There r quite a few good DL coming out this year, but there is NO DB that comes even close to Berry!

DR. and Tom, what u guys were talking about is right. It's 1 thing having the picks, but can u use them right is a whole nother question.. We have to draft well this year and if we do we will have a much better product on the field next year. I think Dom will b great with the draft. Dom found Peanut and has a 7th rounder in Stroughter that is producing as a rookie. I know Stroughter isnt on his way to a pro bowl, but 4 being drafted in the 7th round I think he has started off better than most 7th rounders.

NEway, WOW I was in shock when I pulled upp the page and read this article! LETS GO BUCS!

Robert

The fans in chi town r happy with geting Gaines! LOL go to the CHi Trib website and pull up the article and read the comments! Te article calls Gaines a PROMISING DE! LOL.. funniest thing I heard all day!

John

Somebody got a bad deal on this trade. I personally think Adams was worth a late 1st rounder. We'll see how Adams with da Bears. Maybe it was our coaching and defensive schemes and not Adams' abilities.

aj

The Bucs should be laughing all the way to the draft for this one. I can't believe someone would give up that much for a guy who so clearly just doesn't have it.

People, having better lineman around him would make no difference. It's one thing if he was getting doubled. Then you could say if he was next to a good tackle that drew some doubles, he'd have more opportunities.

But Gaines never gets double teamed, he CANNOT win a one on one battle. Even worse, watch the film, teams are blocking him this year one on one with tight ends in situations. Gaines was getting owned by Witten and Cooley. That is just plain embarrassing.

I would propose trading down next year, too, unless they really want Suh. he's awesome, looks like the 2nd coming of Sapp, but wondering if he is the right size for our new system. You could probably trade down and get Terrance Cody and be just as happy. Dude is a brick wall and will clog a lot of running lanes.

Henry

Tom, you say that Dominick has a great eye for talent. I certainly hope you're right, but what do you you base this on? At this point, nobody knows whether Freeman will be a diamond or a chunk of cubic Zirconia. Miller looks solid and Stroughter looks like he could turn out to be another Hillard. Still, not much evidence at this point to make a call on Dominick, IMO. Next year's draft will tell the story, and it better be a grand slam performance or Dominick will be out of a job.

Dick Weed

Tom is correct, Henry. Mark Dominck has been well schooled and given the chance, he will shine---like yesterday. The cretin Allen drafted GA about 4 rounds too high and look what Mark got for him. A second round pick is great.

Henry

No disagreement about getting a high pick for Adams, but then there's the big contract for Clayton. Jury is out, IMO.

KennyNance

Great, trade a 4th overall pick for a high second round pick, I like where this is going.

KennyNance

This is possibly the most QB heavy draft in NFL history and were stuck with a proven loser named Freeman. Case Keenum, Jimmy Clausen, Colt McCoy, Tony Pike, Todd Reasing, Sam Bradford, Dan Lefevour, Jack Locker. They all could be first rounders. But were stuck. He should have waited a year before drafting a franchise QB. If I took over today I would chalk Freeman down as a loss, just a backup. We've pretty much locked up a top 5 pick and almost guarenteed a top 2 pick. We could take a QB early or even wait till 33 overall or 34 overall and take someone like Keenum or Clausen. Hell, even take Tebow with that bears second round pick, I am higher on Tebow then ESPN.

Tom

Henry,
I've met Mark Dominick so I know what kind of person he is. He's a well liked guy that is sharp as they come.

Secondly, he was Director of Pro Player Personnel so his job was the scouting and recruitment of all NFL players, handles NFL tryouts and monitors our scouting efforts in other leagues in Europe, Canada and Arena. He was responsible for getting us some great free agents on the cheap.

1.) Joe Jurevicius
2.) Ike HIlliard
3.) Keenan McCardell
4.) Greg White (from the Arena League)
5.) Chris Hovan (say what you will, but he was very good for us for awhile. Has dropped off lately.)
6.) Antonio Bryant
7.) Jimmy Wilkerson
8.) BJ Askew
9.) Michael Pittman

Of course, there's been some real duds, too. But, overall Mark Dominick is a very good talent and we're very lucky to have him.

Tom

KennyNance,
I hope you're joking. First, Freeman hasn't played one down in the NFL! How do you know how good he is? You don't like his mechanics, arm strength, decision making, athletic ability?? He has all of those. He played in one of the best conferences in college football on a crappy team and still played well. No other KState player was drafted with him.

I understand that you're upset that we won't go after one of the many very good QBs in this draft. But, you cannot put Tim Tebow in a list of future franchise QBs. If you do, you don't have knowledge of the pro game. You cannot have a spread option QB in the NFL. He only had ONE snap under center last week, and that was for a QB dive play. He's not anywhere near a drop back, pocket QB. He has no arm strength and bad mechanics. He cannot make all of the NFL throws. Tebow's best chance is to fill a role like Pat White in Miami.

Henry

Tom, free agents are easier to evaluate than draft picks. FA's are on tape competing against other professional athletes - there's not a lot of guessing about what they can do for you.

The draft is a whole different story. A guy who looks great in college, beating the crap out of a guy who will never play a down in the NFL, may get drafted high and be a bust. Lot's of players like that.

I want Dominick to prove that he can recognize talent in the draft and not make any major screw-ups in the top selections. - which the Bucs have excelled at over the last decade.

I'm rooting for this guy, but I'll jump on the bandwagon when I see the results, not just the promise.

jjbjeff

Good job getting a second rounder for Gaines. He is strictly an edge rusher and now we will find out if he can play in the NFL or not. If Marinelli can't get anything out of him, then nobody ever will.

If you are going to credit Mark Dominik with bringing in all of the great FA's we have had, let's not forget about all the mistakes that have been made during that time as well. We have not drafted well for years.

The bottom line is Dominik didn't have final say-so on anything until this year, and it will take another year at least before his total body of work can be evaluated.

This was a good move, though IMO.

The past draft, I'm not as pleased with(I was against drafting Freeman).

TrueBucFan

Tom, You hope Freeman can become something. The fact is if the Culter trade went through and Tampa did not draft Freeman, Freeman would have been low first or a second round pick. Tampa traded up to get him when no one wanted him that early. But I agree with you about Tim Tebow. Tebow is a good college QB but nothing more. I don't understand how some people see Tebow and see Peyton Manning. Back to Josh Freeman. In preseason, Freeman had good protection in most games he came in, yes the Dolphin game he was killed, but when he had good protection and his huge, big, powerful arm I hear about under threw alot of guys. The Titans game, was a go route for Stroughter, Freeman under threw him for a pick 6. The Houston game he had decent protection and he under threw two times for two ints. OKAY ITS PRESEASON AND HES YOUNG..... But that amazing arm he has did not impress me at all. Hell Russell on the Raiders can throw 70 yards sitting on his butt they said.. Last week he under threw Louis Murphy, when Murphy had the guy beat by 3 steps. Freeman is apparently going to get his chance soon. If he sucks it up, please don't blame it on him being young. Dilfer showed promise too, that never led to anything on Tampa.

Tom

TrueBucFan,
The truth is no one knows what Freeman is all about yet. The coaching staff sees him everyday and we don't. It bugs me when fans say he's a wasted pick when he hasn't even played a single down in the NFL. Ravens fans were complaining about drafting a no name QB from Delaware that didn't even play in a high level college conference.

When I look at QBs coming out of the draft I look at:
1.) Production
2.) Arm strength to make all NFL throws
3.) Decision making
4.) Pocket awareness and pocket mobility
5.) Pro style offense in college
6.) "It" factor

When I watch Freeman, I saw everything on that list. The jury is still out on #6.

KennyNance

Tom, You obviously dont watch college football. Freeman played in the conference with the worst defenses in college football history last year. Look at every big 12 qb stats last year, freeman was the only player not to dominate. He was the only QB who didnt have a huge year in the big 12 last year. Yea, So what if he can throw the ball 90 yards, who cares, So could Vick, so could Chris Simms, so could Ryan Leaf, so could Jamarcus Russel. He is a proven loser in college football. As for your statement:

"How do you know how good he is? You don't like his mechanics, arm strength, decision making, athletic ability?? He has all of those. He played in one of the best conferences in college football on a crappy team and still played well. No other KState player was drafted with him. "

How do I know Tom? I know because I watch football Tom. I know because Ie seen his stats. I know becasue I watched him in college and I watched him in camp and I know becasue I watched his pathetic preseason where he could have easily had 15 ints. All he has is a very big guy with a very strong arm. Also, Ive heard nothing good about your boy so far this year, heard hes added 10 lbs in fat and he shows up late and hasnt learned the playbook yet, why do you think the "career backup" is starting, because Freeman doesnt have a clue. They need to get a proven winning QB, or leave Johnson as the QB who I like alot. Have a nice weekend Tom.

KennyNance

I wasnt saying Tebow is a franchise QB by the way, I jsut like his versitility and I was just saying hes better then Freeman, BTW, watch a Gator game, Tebow has a cannon on him, he by no means has a weak arm. TrueBucFan, I agree with what your saying, about the draft, I saw some mock drafts having Freeman giong int he 3rd round. Noone was going to take him in the 1st round.

jjbjeff

kennyNance, If the Bucs draft another QB in the first round I'm going to track your azz down, boy!

The pick we used on FREE-loader could have been used on an impact player, not a FREE-loading pine rider.

But what we really need is another LB, DT, S, CB. We can rebuild this defense throught the draft. All of the first 4 picks need to be on D.
