Davis unveils plan for elderly

Speaking before the Florida Council on Aging in Tampa on Tuesday morning, Jim Davis detailed a six-part "Security for our Seniors" plan.

The Tampa Democrat said the state should band with other states to purchase prescription drugs in bulk as well as join Illinois, Vermont, Wisconsin and other states that get drugs from Canada. He also called for investing in stem cell research and said he would review hurricane evacuation procedures to ensure seniors have adequate time to flee and find shelter. Read the plan here.

In other campaign news, Davis will unveil his second television commercial Wednesday at a 10:30 a.m. news conference in Tallahassee.

Gallagher officially thanked Davis for offering a plan that might soon benefit him in his imminent retirement.

This looks great.

GOOO JIM!

This is really impressive. And I heard he was great this morning when he unveiled it.

What a bunch of homers! This is great? This is nothing, this is fluff? Where was he on RX when he was in Congress? Honestly, this is pretty embarassing? When will we get by these 1 page "plans"

Real solutions for real people instead of rapid-fire press conferences that offer nothing original.

Take care, Rod.

Gee - you guys are so good at finding the votes Jim didn't make I thought you would know the answer to where Jim was on the Medicare drug plan. He VOTED AGAINST it. I guess you don't want to talk about that.

Don't worry Rod - Jims' plan for seniors will help you in your retirement too.

I think it's clear where Jim Davis' interests are. Since he started his campaign, he's talked about reducing class size, raising teachers salaries without raising taxes, reducing the cost and improving the availability of quality property insurance, and allowing for Seniors to enjoy the proud retirement they deserve.

Jim Davis doesn't pander to anyone. He doesn't have the support of the print media, he doesn't have the support of indicted officials, and he doesn't have the support of Big Agro, but on Sept. 5, he will have the support of voters because he spoke man-to-man with them about the issues that matter to all Floridians, not just Democratic Primary voters.

guess you haven't checked out RodSmith2006.com
here's how Rod Smith stands on healthcare for ALL Floridians - young and old, insured, those who have fallen in the donut hole. Note with interest the importation of drugs from Canada and pooling the state's accessibility in better prices for drugs whereas the feds have forgone that ability. Also note of interest in the 2.9 hours mandated care per nursing home patient - Rod Smith lead that effort to aid our senior already in nursing homes.

Rod Smith is proud to be the Democratic candidate who, earlier this year, led the call for the state to provide immediate financial assistance for low-income seniors who were being wrongly denied drug benefits under the new federal program.

As Governor, he will launch a full-scale review of the innovative ways that the state can provide more permanent assistance to seniors struggling to negotiate the new Medicare maze. In addition, he will be a strong voice among governors demanding that Washington significantly overhaul the Medicare prescription drug program, as well as finally allow the re-importation of safe more affordable drugs from Canada. He will also work to put Florida at the forefront of states that pool their purchasing power to provide more affordable drugs for working families as well as senior households.

Along with the prescription drug crisis, Florida is still undergoing what the Urban Institute has called a "full-blown crisis" in our nursing home system. This year the current administration proposed a budget that included no new money to boost staffing levels at nursing homes, despite the fact that, in 2001, Florida made the commitment to increase staffing levels at nursing homes across the state. This is just another broken promise by the current administration. Senator Smith is committed to addressing this crisis. This year, he led the effort to finally pass a minimum standard of 2.9 hours of staff care per nursing home resident, a major victory for our seniors and organized labor. As Governor, he will make sure that this standard is fully and swiftly implemented.

Rod Smith's administration will also be dedicated to expanding healthcare coverage for our working families. The overwhelming majority of Floridians with health insurance obtain it through their employer, yet most of our uninsured population is either employed or has a family member who is employed. The workforce should be a central focus for efforts to make health coverage more accessible and affordable. Other states are providing tax credits and finding ways to pool the purchasing power of businesses and their employees. As Governor, Rod Smith will pursue successful models from other states to help businesses and their employees find workable healthcare solutions. As our budget situation stabilizes, he will also support devoting portions of new revenue growth to the expansion of Florida KidCare for low-income uninsured children and their working parents.

you would have the nerve to criticize the length of Davis' policy sheets. Did you notice that Rod's healthcare plan for "everyone" would equate to less than a page if he put it on anything other than a web page...

PS, Jim Davis has had a plan for ALL floridians for a long time, you can find it here: http://images1.istandfor.com/images/FE/chain192siteType8/site149/client/jim%20davis%20fights%20for%20better%20health%20care.pdf

So you are giving him credit for voting against the RX bill? Come on, I know the national Dems are pushing that anti-Bush thing hard, but my parents are saving money on this? I think more and more this is turning away from us, saving money, under budget, kinks worked out, etc. I know he made that vote, but I think in the end, more and more Dems are going to wish they voted the other way on this one, for the first RX benefit offered under Medicare.

Naples News Daily gets it too .... announcing its endorsement of Rod Smith too

10:53- Hopefully your parents are saving money. However, once they get to $2,200, they will be spending $3,000 out of pocket before Medicare picks up the tab again.

That Medicare Part D plan is a sham and is a command and control program written for and by the pharmaceutical companies. Let's give Medicare the power of the free market to negotiate lower drug prices.
