State Dems to Helm: knock it off
Adrien Helm, wife of Pinellas Democratic chairman Ed Helm, is leading the "Pinellas Democrats" Pac that is working to beat some Democratic primary frontrunners (Bill Heller in HD 52, Rick Kriseman in HD 53 and County Commissioner Calvin Harris) deemed to be not "real" Democrats.
Now Mark Herron, general counsel to the state Democratic party, has sent her a cease and desist letter, saying it's illegal to use the name "Democrat" in any advertising without permission from the state party. So now it's Ms. Helm being tagged as not a "real'' Democrat.

Heller and Kriseman aren't real Democrats.
But she should stop anyway.

Real Democrats don't get served with "cease and desist" letters for illegal activity. Thank goodness for Heller and Kriseman. Sounds like the Helm cabal is getting desperate as the boat sinks. Can you say - "time for a lifeboat."

Can anyone talk to the GOP Chairman here..he is making a mess of things badly..RPOF? Hello???
Holy crap..let's trade Dimatteo for helms. I should have voted for Peggy...Peggy I am so sorry now, and now you're going to be elected to the school board and can't run for chairman:(
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 11:06 AM
whos term will be shorter... Lil Soprano or Helm?
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 11:12 AM
11:06 Forget it. Dimatteo controls the whole committe. You can't knock him off. Everyone on there totally supports him, the whole committee does.
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 11:19 AM
I'm sorry too Peggy, you would've been great. Somehow the italian, no the sicilian (which makes a difference), will be outed.

Real Democrats support other Democrats. Kriseman doesn't.
Heller wasn't even a Democrat until he decided to run for this office. At 70 years old it's kind of a death-bed conversion, no?
And where's the long-term vision of Democrats to send a 70 year old freshman to Tallahassee.
That's just bizarre.
As for Kriseman, he'll go to Tallahassee, vote with Republicans up there and raise money for Republican back home. Typical. Typical and sad.
Who needs a Republican party when you have Kriseman and his Republican-lite allies?
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 11:36 AM
Just another example of the Good ole' boy network defending it's own.
The state party is funding Smith ads, the state party is defending Heller and Kreiseman... It's a joke.
Posted by: John F. | August 30, 2006 at 11:42 AM
the state party is funding 3 pack ads for both gubernatorial ads. it's party of campaign finance law. do some research.

11:42 your ignorance is maddening.
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 11:54 AM
Does anyone else find it interesting that the Chair of the Pinellas Democratic party is married to the person being blasted by the FDP for using an illegal PAC name that is endorsing other dem candidates?
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 11:57 AM
Party heads, Party heads, Party heads, blah, blah, blah. The “Republican-lites” (finally, a new phrase!) are petrified that the Dems now have a partisan nut in charge, just like they have.
The real shame is the former DEC chair “Carrie (Wannabe) Wadlinger” and the “Lingerettes” have been working behind the scenes to disrupt the Party operation. Oh, while she taking care of her sick mother I might add. That is why you left, isn’t it?
Funny thing is, CW can be seen at every Gubernatorial event stumping for Davis. How’s mom Carrie? You deserve an Emmy for that performance. Your mother, on the other hand, deserves a better daughter who won’t exploit her sickness for a candidate.
Thanks for dumping on our Party just months before a very important Primary, just so you could interview for a state job.

The Democratic Party has traditionally prided itself as the party of the "big tent". Some of us believe that is a valuable asset to maintain. All this talk of who is a "real Democrat" is not perceived by many people to be the best way to foster party unity. This was evident at last night's DEC meeting when Ed Helm was loudly booed for questioning certain Democratic candidates "Democraticness".
Perhaps Mr. Helm does not understand that in his official capacity as Chair, he is expected to remain nuetral in Democratic primaries. I believe that is one of those Democratic ideals that he has sworn to uphold. The other thing he is supposed to do is get Democrats elected to office. Nowhere does it say only Democrats that Ed Helm approves of. If Mr. Helm can not abide by these two simple precepts, perhaps he should resign so that he may pursue partisan activities that may be more suited to his talents.
As to this business of "not even being a Democrat until...". People, the R's have been cleaning our clock for years by recruiting away promising candidates from the Democratic Party. WE are NEVER going to change that until we start to welcome new converts with open arms. I believe that is also another Democratic ideal that needs a little more attention from the local party.

11:36 --
Inform yourself before spouting. Bill Heller was a registered Democrat for 40 years before he moved to Pinellas (longer than Ms. McCallum's been alive, by the way). He registered as an independent when he came here 15 years ago because he needed to be non-partisan as head of USF-St Pete. What's more, he switched to Democrat whenever there was an important primary.
To say we shouldn't send someone to Tallahassee because he's 70 is just an asinine thing to say. It will be refreshing to have someone up there who can do the right thing and not be constantly worrying about maneuvering to run for higher office. Bill Heller has more experience, knowledge and intelligence in his little toe than Liz McCallum could ever lay claim too...and let's not even discuss her ethical issues.
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 12:11 PM
I just want to know one thing. Who exactly was it that appointed Helm and his cabal to be the arbiters of what a "real" Democrat is? Doesn't that fly in the face of the core values of our party? These people need to go.
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 12:12 PM
gatordem,
Put down the joint and back away slowly. The many people you tout as those who wish to “foster party unity”, are the very people who are destroying the party.
Helm was probably booed for providing “truthiness”, rather than questioning “Democraticness”. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a Helms supporter, but spare the hypocrisy. Jensen dumped on the Party, Steck was a placeholder at best (although I do like him), Wadlinger is as Red as her sister (do the research) and was far from neutral.
What the Pinellas DEC is experiencing is fear. Fear that the Party may actually grow some stones and loyalty, and therefore actually compete of their own volition. Fear of exposure of the many, many, many Republican moles within it, and fear that Pinellas might actually return to a two-party system again.
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 12:15 PM
70 yrs old. Isn't John McCain 70? I guess someone should tell him to go home & not run for office ever again. He's too old.
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 12:17 PM
12:11,
“He registered as an independent when he came here 15 years ago because he needed to be non-partisan as head of USF-St Pete.”
Baloney, spin at best.
“To say we shouldn't send someone to Tallahassee because he's 70 is just an asinine thing to say.”
I agree with you there.
“Bill Heller has more experience, knowledge and intelligence in his little toe than Liz McCallum could ever lay claim too...and let's not even discuss her ethical issues.”
Be careful young man, Pandora’s box for Heller (and his staff) if you dare.

Just like Democrats. Free Speech, Free Thinking, Big Tent - except when it comes to people who don't agree with leadership.
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 12:22 PM
12:15
If I did smoke, which I don't, I'd want some of what you are smoking. "Many, many Republican moles"? Are you kidding me? Apparently you don't know any Republicans. Just mention the Pinellas DEC to them and time how long it takes them to stop laughing.
It is the height of hypocrisy to suggest the Democratic Party can only have unity if everyone drinks the Kool-Aid passed out by the chair. Apparently you never heard of Will Rogers, either.
It is a shame too. Pinellas does indeed have a chance to return to a two party system again. There are seats there for the picking this year. But we have no chance if the performance I saw last night is repeated. I will say that both sides have their own problems in this regard. But if the Chair is intent on supressing any real discussion of the issues confronting the Party, as was evidenced last night, then there will be no chance.
Posted by: gatordem | August 30, 2006 at 12:26 PM
12:20 -
This is 12:11. First off, I'm not a man, nor am I young. You know the old adage about what happens when you assume...
Call it spin if you want. It's true.
With McCallum making all this noise about loyalty, where's hers? She loaned her own campaign a pretty large sum of money last cycle, yet she's NEVER supported another Democratic candidate with a contribution in the 4 years she's lived in Florida. That's pretty pathetic. And it's just more evidence that she's not a "real" anything, other than a real political opportunist.
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 12:27 PM
Gator… My understanding of last night’s debacle was quite the opposite. The Chair was trying to suppress those who didn’t vote for him, from disrupting the meeting at the behest of the former chair, working from the sidelines.
Those, who by the way, are the “unity folks” you’ve heard talk about. Helms will not last if he doesn’t handle this well, that’s a fact. But he deserves the chance. The same chance given to Wadlinger during her tenure. She left of her own accord, and now wields destructive and divisive power form behind the scene through her plebes. It’s any act of jealousy and it’s despicable. Hell hath no wrath like a woman scorn, now add testosterone to that.
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 12:39 PM
12:27,
Sorry for the gender thing, no offence. I’m not an ageist either.
Spin indeed - true, my butt. His political party affiliation has no bearing on his duties at USF, so save that noise. That’s cover, period. You only insult yourself by trying to defend that position.
I understand it though. If you researching political donation history, you’re either a Heller staffer, or a staffer for one of his buds… Opportunistic… Puuuleease. What’s changing Parties and jumping in at the last minute to oppose someone who’s been working the district for over two years?…
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 12:46 PM
Ed Helm has "fired" people from board positions so as to consolidate power into the hands of a few. According to their website, there are 7 vacancies. Including 2 of the most important for a general election that takes place in barely 2 months: FINANCE & VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR.
How does this unite the party & get democrats elected? From the sounds of it last night, there was only one woman coordinating all of the efforts for contacting voters. Good luck with that...
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 12:47 PM
The true woman being scorned last night was the President of the YD's. The Chair was doing everything in his power to avoid giving her the opportunity to ask the membership to direct disbursement of the funds that were in the membership approved budget for the YD's. The Chair didn't want to do it, and tried with all his might to adjourn the meeting before it could happen. In the end, the YD's are geting their money. The vote was overwhelming in favor.
I'm not sure how you came to your understanding, but that is in fact what happened.
Posted by: gatordem | August 30, 2006 at 12:48 PM
Helms is an idiot, plain and simple. You wonder how he lost every precinct in Democrat leaning St. Pete? Stunts like Tiger Bay yesterday.
How stupid do you have to be to stand up as DEC Chair at a televised Tiger Bay debate, introduce yourself as Chair of the Party, and ask one of the highest ranking County Democrats if he's a "real" Democrat?
Karen Thurman needs to get this clown in line. He's backing the opponents of every prominent Dem in Pinellas - he's even opposing the liberal Linda , because she didn't comply with his whacko dictates. Maybe he's aiming to lose every precinct in Pinellas this time.
Posted by: newdem | August 30, 2006 at 01:00 PM
Linda LERNER, that is.
Posted by: newdem | August 30, 2006 at 01:01 PM
Didn't the republican Chairman also get into primary battles? Is there this much discord on their side too?
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 01:07 PM
Tony Dimattero is a buffoon
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 01:08 PM
I'm still waiting for anyone to explain to me why the party would back a 70 year old on again off again Democrat over a 30something woman.
That's just bad politics.
As for Helm, I agree they should stop this PAC. Maybe we can all agree on that point.
But Helm is not wrong for wanting Democratic candidates to act like Democrats. When Democratic candidates support electing Republicans, they shouldn't run as Democrats. Period. If they like Republicans so much they should be one.
Although I don't think it will happen, I hope Kriseman and Heller both lose. And it has zero to do with Helm and everything to do with them being lousy Democrats.
God help us all if we can't pick the best Democrat in a Democratic primary. Isn't that the point? If we wanted Democrats in Tallahassee to select our candidates, we'd abolish the primary system.
And it seems to me all this complaining has more to do with the state party leadership not wanting to be challenged than anything else.
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 01:16 PM
If you think he's an idiot maybe you should try to spell his name right - it's Helm. No s.
It gives you more credibility with you attack the guy.
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 01:18 PM
Are helms and dimattero drinking buddies?
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 01:31 PM
1:16
Of course DEMOCRATS have the opportunity to choose whom they please in a primary election. That is exactly the point. The PARTY is required to remain nuetral in a Democratic primary. The Chair is expected to respect that nuetrality. No Democrats elected anyone for the purpose of telling us which candidates are appropriately Democratic. Especially not the County Chair.
Posted by: gatordem | August 30, 2006 at 01:34 PM
1:16, The Party would back "a 70 year old on again off again Democrat over a 30 something woman." Because he can WIN. Liz will lose that seat. If Democrats ever want to become a majority again in Florida we have to learn to open up to moderate/centrist Democrats. I don't know what Heller's voting record will look like, but I can guarantee you he will vote with the Dems 70% of the time which is good enough to me. I would rather have someone who votes with us 70% of the time, then have someone (the Republican) who votes with us 0% of the time. I guarantee you Heller will be with us on every big issue. So Heller may not be your ideal liberal Democrat. You know what he is though, he is a Democrat who can win back a Republican seat and that's good enough for me. A liberal Democrat can not win this seat!
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 01:41 PM
1:41, right on. When will Democrats realize that we can't win every seat in the Florida Legislature with a liberal Democrat? Some seats are just drawn better for a moderate candidate on either side. I for one am tired of losing election after election because we put forth the most liberal candidates in a moderate seat. This is a great opportunity to choose a Moderate Democrat for a moderate seat. I agree Liz will NOT win this seat.

OK, OK, OK, someone has to straighten you people out.
12:47,
Ed Helm fired people because immediately upon his election as chair, a few Wadlinger hangovers and Deaniacts began to strip the office of important information needed to elect Democrats out of rebellion. Ask yourself your own question… how does that unite the party and get Democrats elected? Save the weak spin attempts.
gatordem of 12:48,
Like I’ve said before, put down the joint and back away slowly. The YD’s were having trouble getting funding because they spend it on Vegan worship and viewings of Brokeback Mountain. They also work only for those few (Fink) select candidates. They only got the money out of pity, and will do more harm that good with it.
newdem,
He lost St. Pete because St. Pete Democrats don’t vote, fool. Do your research. 17% turn out.
Thurman needs to stay away, we’re got our own version of her, “Thurmlinger”, and we’re done with her too.
1:16,
Your thinking is all wrong here. “If Democrats ever want to become a majority again in Florida we have to”… we need to expose the Republican moles within it, and clean them out.

What a bunch of babbling nonsense. Truth is, neither Heller nor McCallum will win 52.
Posted by: Around Town | August 30, 2006 at 02:24 PM
Did anyone count all of the new members that Ed Helm brought in to the DEC last night? There were dozens, maybe double the usual turnout. He and the loyal Democrats are doing great work building the party. I include most of the Steck group, who are working for unity or have moved into a campaign.
The few trouble makers get a lot of exposure in the Times, which has a grudge against all who try to change the ruling political machine. Those who bash the party chair in the Times or on the web either want to help the other party or can't see beyond their own ego. Some are well intentioned but still undermine their own party. I don't agree with all of Ed Helm's actions but I give him a lot of credit for building a stronger party. In a few months we will elect a new Chair and other leaders to a full term. That is the time to criticize and work for whoever you support. Those who chose to disrupt our election campaign need to go away.
I will support those Democrats who win the primary. It is fair to point out that Bill Heller has helped The Republican candidates for Gov and for the seat that he is now running for. Liz McCallum is the better choice.
The Times endorsement for Harris points to his promises because he has so done little for us. I don't like his cozy relationship with the Republican leadership but the reason for me to work for Norm Roche is that Norm is concerned with the rising violence in South St. Pete.
We need more police on the street in St. Pete. The police department is in serious trouble. We remain understaffed as 150 veteran officers were replaced with rookies. Deputies could fill the gap and improve conditions so that we can start recruiting and rebuilding.
For years Harris and other incumbents could't admit that we have a problem. To do that would go against Rick Baker and his money.

2:08, "Republican Moles" as you put it don't run for office under the Democratic banner. Why would they? Just because a Democrat doesn't side with you 100% of the time it doesn't mean that person is not a Democrat. What happen to the Democratic Party being the Big Tent Party? The fact that the Republicans can roll out Rudy and Arnold (both pro choice, anti-gun, and in favor of gay rights) at their national convention, shows just how far behind we are. The philosophy of you are either with us 100% or you are against us is what has put the Republicans in power. People were kicked out of the Democratic Party because they differed on certain issues from other Democrats. Where did the folks go, that's right the Republican Party. And the more we exclude people with different views from our own, the deeper in the hole we fall.

I'm not sure who appointed you to "straighten us out". But as Rod Smith would say, here's a little straight talk for you:
1) Ed Helm claimed a "book" with volunteer information was removed from the HQ. I happen to know that all the important information about volunteers is on the computer, not in a "book". Weak spin? How about a misleader?
2) The membership approved the funding for the YD's when they approved the budget. It is NOT within the perogative of the Chair to refuse to fulfill his obligation to disburse those funds without going back to the membership to modify the approved budget. (And if you can't come up with anything better than the joint lines, maybe you just ought ot give up).
3) If you really believe this republican mole BS, your elevator does not go all the way to the top. The R's consider the Pinellas DEC such a joke they wouldn't wast their time. If you ever meet an R, ask them.
4) A turnout of 17% is not all that unusual for a city election. Do your research. It is also possible that a lot of Dems did not turn out because they looked at the (Dem) candidate in the "non=partisan" election and just didn't like what they saw.
So quit drinking the Kool-Aid. You're just giving the rest of us gas.
BTW - you only demean yourself with personal attacks. Try to stick to the issues if you can. Also, I only go to this effort because I want the party to succeed. This is not about personalties with me. I could care less, as long as people do what they are supposed to do, rather than what they want to do, and the hell with the rules. Working within the rules and at least appearing to try to get along with people would solve a whole lot of this. In my opinion, it was absolutely shameful what went on last night.
Posted by: gatordem | August 30, 2006 at 03:09 PM
Look, folks, we can all have our own opinions about who is a true Democrat. (Me, I think Bill Heller -- someone who has decades of community service, devoted his career to special needs children, supports gay rights, etc. -- meets the definition far better than "say anything for money" McCallum, but that's just my opinion.) The point is that the CHAIR of the party (via his wife) does NOT get to use his office to foist his opinion on the rest of us. Not only is it unethical, it's against the party bylaws and he needs to be tossed.
Posted by: | August 30, 2006 at 03:15 PM
3:15,
To be clear. The former Chair engaged in the exact same thing (and worse) and nobody tossed her out. So save you by-laws BS. The former Chair and vice-chair refused to follow by-laws for their entire rule. Get honest with yourself, you’ll be happier.
gator,
Take you own advise on the personal insults. Damn, you hypocrites make me laugh, in a sad way. The YD’s are being misled and misdirected, and that’s the saddest thing about it. They should be concerned about their upcoming trip to Iran, not eating fish and watching movies about the gay lifestyle. Wake up, and lay off the Kool-Aid yourself for a while.
If you really don’t believe in the Republican mole reality, then you’re know where near as intelligent about politics as you appear to be in your posts. (Credit where it’s due)
The Times called Baker the next Governor because of his “70% Landslide”. 70% of 17% is 12% total. Do your research, sport, I have. Why do you think the state wants to spend so much money in St. Pete? NEWS FLASH!!! St. Pete Dems don’t vote!
BTW, when you have the courage to put an issue out there for discussion, I’m in. Until then, get back to work for your candidate. This is no way to spend “their” valuable time.

$100.00 to Frank Farkas in 2004?
$100.00 to Angello Cappelli in 2006?
Are you sure Heller knows which party he belongs to?
As Dad used to say,"Put your money where your mouth is." Needless to say where Dean Heller puts his mouth.

Ouch... That's not right. Funny though!
How does Heller explain supporting his potential opponent? If Heller and Capelli win, looks like Capelli has a great tag line.
"Vote for me, my oponent will"
Sorry fools, I't all about LIZ!

4:09 - or should I just call you sport?
OK, whoever you are, here's some research for you:
St. Petersburg Municpal Elections
Year Turnout %
1999 13%
2001 34%
2003 25%
Average 24%
2005 21%
So, like I said, this turnout (21%, not 17%) is not unusual. Here's some more research for you:
John Kerry got 225,460 votes in Pinellas in 2004 and voter turnout was 77%. SOME of those must have been Democrats. Besides, where I learned my politics, it is the candidates job to get out the vote. It soes not happen by magic. So, that's actually an issue for you. Our Chair's main job is to get Dems elected. To get elected, you have to turn out the vote. Our Chair has a dismal record in getting the vote turned out for his own candidacy. Should we not be worried about that?
Here is another newsflash for you. The YD's are governed by their own charter and are free to elect their own leadership. THAT is not under the control of the County Chair. If the YD's are unhappy with their leadership, they have their own remedies. If the Chair believed that the money would be misspent, why did he not offer that argument. As I said, the support of the membership was overwhelming for the YD's to get their money.
There is one other thing you did not even attempt to refute. That is the Chair's claim that a "book" was stolen and all volunteer info was lost. Is that info not on the copmputer? Was there really such a "book"? And if it was on the computer, what was lost?

Nice to see someone ill-informed about the role of police staffing in St. Pete. Neither Harris nor Roche can do ANYTHING to change the staffing levels of police in St. Petersburg. You know who can? The St. Pete City Council and the St. Pete Police Dept.
If Roche got you to believe that he can affect a change in how St. Pete conducts its business (specifically the police), then please tell us all what flavor that Kool Aid is so that the rest of us don't drink it.
If Roche is interested in helping South St. Pete and their violence problem, what has he done as a private citizen to help? I can tell you: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. But it works as a campaign issue, and all he cares about is getting elected.
Has he dropped on you that he has been getting ready to be elected for 20 years? Guess it took him that long to understand the issues of Pinellas County.
Did you ever think that Harris is cozy with the R leadership on the Commission because he will only get anything done by working with them, and not against? Probably not.
Educate yourself. Those who lay down with dogs are bound to get fleas, so if you are helping Roche, start scratching.

Aren't the Helms supporting Rod Smith?
With supporters like the Helms and Big Sugar, what does that tell you?

When has Norm Roche ever BEEN to South St. Pete, other than the Commission debate two weeks ago? Brian, you've gotta write better scripts for your brother/general election opponent.

5:40:
If Roche has been getting ready for 20 years, he wasn't doing such a good job back then. Have you checked out his criminal record on www.pinellascounty.org? Go search Norman Roche. He's got multiple counts of public intoxication, probation for criminal mischief, and one count of petit theft. Doesn't sound like a budding politician to me...at least not a very smart one. Maybe someone (Will Van Sant, hello?) should do a little research and let the public know who the "real" Democrats are.

Local ads rile state party
The state Democratic Party tells a Pinellas PAC to stop implying party endorsements in some contested primary races.

ST. PETERSBURG — The state Democratic Party has scolded the wife of Ed Helm, chairman of the Pinellas Democratic Party, for using its name in an attack ad and endorsements in local races.
The state party’s attorney asked Adrien Helm and the Pinellas Democrats Political Action Committee to “cease and desist” from using the word “Democrats” in its name. Adrien Helm chairs the group.
The PAC sent out a mailer last week to Democratic Party members in House District 52 attacking Bill Heller, who is running against Liz McCallum in Tuesday’s primary.
It asserts that Heller is “not a real Democrat.”
Also, House District 53 voters received a letter from a local party official endorsing a slate of candidates, including Norm Roche for county commissioner and Charlie Gerdes for District 53 representative, over their opponents in the party primary. That letter also was paid for by Adrien Helms’ group.
Darryl Paulson, professor of government at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, said such divisions could damage the Democrats’ chances of winning seats in November.
“This is a very strange thing to do at a time when the Pinellas Democratic Party finally seemed to be coming together,’’ Paulson said. “This is certainly going to tear it apart. This is certainly not going to help them into the general election campaign.”
The moves also have Heller and the other candidates who were not endorsed by the local party steamed.
“These distortions were mailed by a group that is right now being reprimanded by the Florida Democratic Party for violating Florida statutes,’’ said Heller, 70, former University of South Florida St. Petersburg dean, who received the mailer at his home.
“What you have is a group that doesn’t obey the law getting involved in negative campaigning.”
Mark Herron, general counsel for the Florida Democratic Party in Tallahassee, said Tuesday that if the local PAC does not change its name, the party will seek an injunction against it.
Neither Adrien Helm nor her husband, Ed Helm, chairman of the Pinellas Democratic Party and a former candidate for St. Petersburg mayor, returned phone calls Monday and Tuesday.
