House investigation
Close to midnight Friday night, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi asked her colleagues to support an investigation into the emails that would also examine when Republican leaders knew about Foley's activities. House Majority John Boehner referred the inquiry to the House ethics committee.
From Pelosi''s statement:
"The investigation must determine when Mr. Foley sent the inappropriate emails, who knew of them, whether there was a pattern of inappropriate activity by Mr. Foley with pages or former pages, when the Republican leadership was notified, and what corrective action was taken once officials learned of any improper activity.
"For more than 150 years, children from across the nation have come to Washington to serve as pages in the U.S. Capitol. The Page School is a national treasure, and the children who attend it and work in the Congress are our special trust. Members of Congress have a responsibility to protect their employees, especially young pages who serve this institution."

now that is a good statement.

come on spt (socialist party times) it has been 24 hours since people here started asking why you held the foley storey from november 05 until now, 5 weeks before the election. if you were asking questions of a politican and he didnt answer you for over 24 hours you would blast them in your paper!! what do you have to hide? Are your communist party censors that you commonly call "editors" afraid to tell us the truth? Or are they all laughing this morning because they once again their political agenda is served at all cost?
Don't misunderstand me, what foley did was terrible. He deserves what he gets. But the actions of the spt (socialist party times) are ethically bankrupt. Stop with the yellow journalism and begin to uphold your responsibility to the public trust!!!!! Stop trying to be the arbitrator that deciedes whom to attack for political gain along with when and how!!! This behavior on the part of the spt (socialist party times) must stop!!!! You have a responsibility to report the news not to hold stories until they can cause maximum damage!!
The people of florida deserve an explination!! We are waiting

The story about the original, more innocent, e-mails came out when ABC News reported it on their Blotter blog.
I'm thinking that the St. Pete Times had only heard from the one boy from Lousiana and only had the original e-mails, not the sexually explicit instant messages. With only the suspicion that something was off about Foley, they opted not to run with the story.
I'm not defending the paper so much as hoping that this is the case. Remember that when ABC News reported on the first e-mails, other young men started coming forward about Foley. If the Times had run with the article, everybody would have been attacking them for insinuating that a Congressman was trying to have sex with underage boys. Just another instance of Pravda West running a good Republican in to the ground just to sell newspapers.
If I'm right, then the Times actually erred on the side of caution and waited until more information came out. Remember that the first kid's parents told the House leadership that they wanted to subject dropped. I'm assumig that the parents made the same request of the Times, possiblty after the gravity of their granting an interview set-in.
On the issue of timing, when is a good time to report on something like this? Representatives campaign continuously and it's always a campaign. Either they have just gotten elected (running down a reelected Republican), are spinning up their campaign and raising money (attacking a Congressman as he starts to raise money), running up to the election (taking him out in the heat of the campaign), or when the election is upon us (as in this case).
We will probably see a Phil Gailey column (ala explaining their endorsements) in the coming days that explains why they sat on the story. If he doesn't come out with something explaining why ABC had to force their hand, there are some more seriously problems than simple bias.
Lastly, if you want to go after a liberal rag, talk about the Bradenton Herald.

sorry to say but it aint so joe!! the spt has a LONG history of yellow journalism. Besides the stories they have printed in the past I have personal knowledge from direct conversation with spt reporters that they have plent more stories like this but they strategically choose when to run them so tthey can sell the most newspapers possible.
also i have to call BS on this statement of yours: "Remember that the first kid's parents told the House leadership that they wanted to subject dropped. I'm assumig that the parents made the same request of the Times, possiblty after the gravity of their granting an interview set-in." So if a politician does something like this and the victim doesnt want the story published you mean they shouldnt publish they story? HUH? The public should be informed as to the actions of their elected representatives. Give me a break!!!
btw--i couldnt give a crap about the brandon paper, I live in st pete not brandon.

Get over yourselves, you cannot tie one person to the whole republican party. Many of these wackjob stories about all the republicans knowing is coming out of the far left smear web sites, and are totally false.
And since wacko Pelosi reads these libelous sites, she calls for an investigation. Nothing will come out of this.
Posted by: | September 30, 2006 at 08:34 AM
Mark Foley was a sicko who deserves what he gets. Get over yourselves in tying this to republicans and Crist.
Governor Crist will be great for our state. He is up 10 points avg, and the longer people gripe and moan about this sick freak Foley, the longer Crist holds his lead.
All the better for us GOP's, especially since the cabinet races have the GOP leading as well, but by less points.
Posted by: | September 30, 2006 at 08:36 AM
8:34 and 8:36 No I won't get over myself. It took Democrats a matter of hours after learning of the matter. Whereas, the republican leadership has known about this for a year, in fact the Republican leadership told Foley a year ago to stop any and all such discussions on the internet, in person, etc.
However, the Republican leadership kept it quiet, allowed Foley to remain co Chair on the Caucus of exploited and missing children, and it is sickening.

Anyone involved in the process knows that the St. Pete Times is selective about who and what they print, but I don't think it has anything to do with party affiliation. The Times has its favorites and it protects them to the nth degree or ignores the obvious.
In one instance, innuendo about a politician's personal life, even when it doesn't rise to the level of being illegal or immoral, is reported to the point where it is vetted and whatever the allegations are found to be untrue or misleading. For better or worse, the issue is reported. On the other hand, if it one of their favorites, even hard evidence about the individual's conduct or hypocrisy, even when it has to do with that individual's elected position, is ignored or supressed.
The Times may have even convinced themselves that they don't do it, but they do.
Posted by: | September 30, 2006 at 09:58 AM
9:41 why doesn't the St. Pete Times run a thread about the Senator who got S___faced and drove his car into a river. There was a girl in thnbere with him and instead of calling for help, he called his "people" to spin up the story in an attempt to save his political career. Meantime, the woman drowned.
Oh. that's right. That's not news anymore. It hapenned about 40 years ago and oh, yes, it was Sen. Ted Kennedy (D. Mass) Does that mean all Ds are irresponsible, drunks who would be tried for vehicular homicide in any other circumstances?

Re Scott Montgomery's editor's note: The Times never names minors victimized in possible sex crimes. Therefore, Mr. Montgomery's excuse for not publishing this story last year is false. As your government and politics editor admits, the parents didn't say the story wasn't true or ask that you not publish it - they merely asked you not to specifically identify their son if you did. The "Times" - by its inaction and lack of journalistic skill, follow through and courage - is as guilty, or inept, as House leadership in the institutional and possibly criminal coverup of Mr. Foley's commonly known-on-the-Hill behavior.

Good questions 3:40
Corrupt Republicans in the House have assinged a child abuser (Foley) to be on a the Child Abuse Committee. isn't it only fitting that the GOP has assigned the Foley matter to the Ethics Committee, Chaired by none other than the ethically challenged Tom Davis.
The same Tom Davis who is a member of the Abramoff 65. The same Tom Davis who is investigating Abramoff. The same Tom Davis that has so far protected fellow Republicans from the full light of a real investigation. The same Tom Davis who works hand in hand with his "lobbyist" wife. The same Tom Davis we can count on to protect the GOP culture of corruption. The same Tom Davis has now been given the assignment to protect the GOP from child abuse charges.
GOP corruption.. protectiong our young....

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –– Laura Bush, wife of GOP presidential candidate George W. Bush, on Thursday recalled the pain of a 1963 accident that killed her boyfriend, saying "it was crushing."
"All I can say about that (is) it was a very, very, tragic accident I was involved in when I was 17 years old, almost 40-something years ago," Bush said. "It was a terrible accident. It was terrible for everyone involved."

Hey Ima,
You are a clear illustration of why Democrats cannot be trusted. First, you refer to a "GOP dictatorship." I presume that this is a reference to your party's inability to win elections in recent years.
Secondly, in typical Democrat fashion, you are only concerned with investigating Republican lawmakers. We in the GOP do not rally behind the guilty as you guys are fond of doing. We demand that they step down and face the full weight of the justice system! Furthermore, we seek justice for ALL, not just our political opponents.

Carol Jean Jordan should immediately step down as the Chairman of the RPOF this case is the icing on the cake. Carol Jean and other Florida Republicans leaders have know about Foley's continued issues with underage boys but have refused to show leadership by forcing him out of office. This could have been accomplished in 2004 but Carol Jean refused to listen. Carol Jean wants to travel around the United States and tell everyone how great the Republican Party is in Florida and tell the RNC how they need to be more like Florida Republicans. Now the world is seeing exactly what is going on in Florida and our parties founding Father is turning over in his grave. Maybe the RNC will show a little leadership and request Carol Jean step down as the Chair of Chairs effective immediately.

Chairman Carol Jean Jordan’s official resignation letter states that her resignation will be effective Friday, November 17, 2006. This is the first day of the RPOF quarterly meeting in Orlando, she will preside over the morning meeting but hand off interim leadership at 12 noon in a live press conference. In the evening the Chairman’s reception will be held in honor of former Chairman Carol Jean Jordan for contribution to the RPOF. Later on that evening there will be a Governor elect reception for Governor elect Charlie Crist.
Cordially,
Abe Lincoln, Interim Chair of the RPOF

Stop with the partisan nonsense, all have children that they would act to protect. Exploiting this for political gain is making this sick story even sicker.

Pelosi would do well to recall Rep. Studds, D-MASS.
Studds was admonished in 1983 when it was revealed that he had a sexual relationship with a male page. He turned his back to the House and held a press conference defending that he and the 17 year old boy were "consenting adults." He went on to serve until 1996.
Where was Nancy's moral indignation and where was then Democrat-majority leadership demanding the immediate resignation.
The unfortunate ills of human nature know no party affiliation.
