Crist on the Foley Scandal
Republican nominee for governor Charlie Crist calls the Mark Foley scandal "tragic and terrible. What can you say?"
Crist said Monday he has directed his child predator cyber crime unit in Jacksonville to "offer any assistance" that may help the FBI and FDLE in their criminal investigation of Foley and his sexually-charged e-mails to teenage male pages on Capitol Hill.
As for what role his agency will have in the Foley case, "That really will be up to the FBI," Crist said. "The last thing I want to do is get in the way of an ongoing investigation, but I want to offer any appropriate support that I can."
Asked if he personally knew anything about Foley's behavior before it became a public sensation last Thursday, Crist said: "No. Only what I've read in news accounts."
Crist has been aggressive in publicizing Internet predator cases handled by his agency. He testified before a Congressional subcommittee last year on the need for better inter-agency coordination at all levels of government to track online pedophilia. His web site still carries a June 7, 2005 release about his testimony -- including praise for three Florida members of Congress "for their dedication to finding workable solutions on this important issue." They are Reps. Ginny Brown-Waite, Katherine Harris and Foley.

Crist praised the efforts of members of Florida's Congressional Delegation for their dedication to finding workable solutions on this important issue, including Reps. Mark Foley, Katherine Harris and Ginny Brown-Waite. He pledged to work with the federal government to develop and implement meaningful procedures to protect children from sex offenders, who he called "a blight on society."

Way to be a leader, Charlie.

Gimme a break 3:57, if he did anything else you'd accuse him of trying to make headlines. Crist is responding VERY appropriately.

I guess this means no more trips to Key West with his good buddy Mark.
Posted by: | October 02, 2006 at 04:04 PM
I think that last sentence in this post is going to come back to bite Crist in the ankles. The hypocrisy of the Republicans and the carelessness with which they have treated the electorate while drunk on power has to be called into account this election.

Nice pic...couple of career politicians with nice tans, early 50's, single, both rumored to be gay who are good friends and like to take trips to Key West together.

"What can you say?"
Charlie, you want to be Governor? "What can you say?" That's it?
Reminds me of the scene on "West Wing" where after the secret servicwe agent is killed in a bodega holdup, President Bartlett tells his R challenger (supposed to be the Gov of Florida) about it and the R says, "Crime, boy, what can you say?".
Bartlett says, "If anybody asks, right here and right now is when I decided to kick your ass."
Charlie, if we hadn't before, right here and right now is when we decided to kick youre ass.

Gatordem,
He is a people person, he talks like an average person, not a stuffed shirt poitician trying to say exactly what is politically correct. That is what people like about him. Moderate, and people friendly. Thats in addition to his plans for Florida.

Charlie may be a people person. What he is NOT is a LEADER. That was the most namby, pamby staement about a pedophile that I've ever heard. I just listened to Bay Buchanon on CNN ripping the House leadership for not taking action. Where is Charlie's anger, his passion?
If he had children, he might, might know how the rest of us feel.

gatordem
Do you have children?
Posted by: moderate | October 02, 2006 at 04:49 PM
A true leader knows when to lead, and when it is not his deal. This is an FBI case, he can only assist. As a leader he knows that.
He could have made stronger statements though, but i dont over analyze statements just to find negatives on people. I just look at stances and votes.

No, b/c Crist is a politician, not a babysitter. 16 year old girls are babysitters. Then again, my oldest brother lost his virginity to a 16 year old female babysitter, when he was 11.

Charlie's laying low, ( no pun intended) and doing so on purpose. Stuff could come forward tying him to Markie, just being a close friend, and right now, not just Florida, but most of America sees FOLEY as a true, secret scumbag and a perv. Frankly, I am surprised he said anything???

Wait a minute now, I’m totally confused. I thought only Democrats were gay, pedophiles, and got abortions – and Republicans were God’s chosen people. Now I’m hearing that Republicans can also be gay, pedophiles, and get abortions.
Well then, who are God’s chosen people if not the Republicans? The Bible say’s it’s the Jews, but most of them are Democrats. Dubya, Katherine, Rhonda, and the like all claim to be sent from God, but all are Republican. Clinton got a hummer in the oval, and he’s a Democrat. Cheney is a Republican, but his daughter is a carpet muncher… Crist is rumored to be a pole-smoker… Foley is a boy-chaser… Damn, it’s getting worse, ummmmmmm…Where are Nader and Perot when you need them?

Wont, Voters hate trying to blame someone else clearly not connected as they tend to put themselves in the same situation and see that its unfair. Thats why there are many candidates that run and succeed for elected office even with immediate family members with questionable and convited past, voters don't hold another innocent accountable for a separate persons act unless there is a clear connection of partial responsibility.
Posted by: | October 02, 2006 at 06:47 PM
Let's not ask Charlie any questions about what life was like with Mark as his roomate. Heaven forbid. I mean, we all know that pedophilia just suddenly comes over you one night, and it didn't even happen yet when Mark and Charlie were roomates. Mark's fascination with the young FSU football players was NOT an indication of his incipient pedophilia.
So, there's really no reason WHATSOEVER to ask Charlie any of these questions.
Posted by: gatordem | October 02, 2006 at 06:55 PM
Again its well known that Crist and Foley were very close..His statement was panzy..We need our next GOP governor to demand an immediate investigation by theFDLE now!Crist was Foleys roomate when they served in the legislature ..Print that one Adam!
Posted by: Imadashell | October 02, 2006 at 07:30 PM
Relax all, hopefully things will be front and center very soon, investigations are everywhere at this point. Hopefuly as well, whatever is out there will come to surface and we Floridians will finally get some answers. We hope for the GOP that CC and Foley weren't too close???

Posted by: Ron Mills | October 02, 2006 at 07:49 PM
Charlie, Charlie, Charlie ... NOW is the time to bring anything and everything up front. You are going to win the election but please, start caring about the people of Florida already, will you?!
Please come clean and convince every one of us - you are not gay, you have no huge secrets in your closet, and convin ce us that you knew nothing of your roommate's perverted ways. I mean please, the football players - sure they were adults but this man, and you have spoken out about the "horrors of homosexuality" and Foley, being a homosexual - showing his perverted hypocritical self.
So for Florida's SECURITY, please show us how much you love Florida and her people, come clean on anything and everything. Oh yeah, and btw - you better be bringing charges against Foley - your old roommate - as he was IMing underage children sexually explicit material from the panhandle - Pensacola I believe is still part of Florida! Go get 'em AG!
Posted by: | October 02, 2006 at 08:19 PM
Whart the hell is this? Come on Charlie you are the AG. Why dont you open your own investigation? Oh wait might you have been apart of some of it with your former roomate? This is pretty fishy and not a good political move. Charlie should be burning this man at the stake. This makes me sick.
Kudos to the SP Times for finally asking a good question. It only took you four days and a million blogs requesting it.
Posted by: | October 02, 2006 at 08:46 PM
Charlie isn't going after Foley and you all know it. Stop this rhetoric. He won't come front and center unless something surfaces to bring things there. And then.. OMG!
Posted by: | October 02, 2006 at 08:49 PM
8:46
YOu are a far left looney tune. DO you not get it that when the FBI takes over the investigation, FL has NO authority to investigate the case, only assist. This case crossed state lines, that is a federal crime.
Learn the laws before throwing out stupid questions.
Posted by: | October 02, 2006 at 09:24 PM
Ron, don't throw stone's when you live in a "glass house". Has the authorities investigated yet?. Its your ONW DEMOCRATIC collegues questioning you.

What will Charlie Crist do to protect our children?
After all, he did room with this SEXUAL PREDATOR and as stated above - these kinds of SEXUAL PERVERSIONS don't just start over night. Why does Charlie Crist not love Florida and her children? What will Charlie do - he did promise before his exroommate to protect our kids, didn't he. wink wink, nod nod

Did some Repugnicant actuall write "see that its unfair"?
"Unfair" - this from the party of the "Willie Horton ads"?
"Unfair" from the party of the "swift boat" ads?
"Unfair" from the party that placed Max Cleland next to Osama Been Forgotten"?
"Unfair" from the party which has nothing to offer but fear itself"?
"Unfair" from the party of sugar slimers?
"Unfair" now that the shoe is on the other foot ?
Isn't the Repugnicant party the party of hypocrisy?

9:24 - Hey thanks for the nice remarks however I am actually a Repub. And for the record Mr. Law School grad CC can open an investigation inside the state. How do you know that Mr. Foley did not talk to any young boys within his district or within the state? You dont! And would it hurt to look? That would be why he should open an investigation. Oh but wait you are a typical Republican and cant think for yourself you just attack and call people "evil libs" well as of right now I am totally leaning that way. This repub crap makes me sick.Time after time these guys and gals are getting away with murder and all the rupub party can do is attack. For example 1)No bombs in iraq so why are we there? Repub aanswer: "That man/women doesnt care about our safety and is anti american" It is one thing after another and no one is willing to hold these men accountable. CC is protecting his friend just like everyone else in DC was hoping to cover this up until after the election. We need to clear out Congress and start anew. Libs and Repubs both need to go. This is making me ill.
Posted by: | October 03, 2006 at 09:20 AM
9:20 I commend you for "seeing the light"
Our legislators have forgotten who they represent - WE THE PEOPLE - and its time that we remind them that the real power - it resides with US, WE THE PEOPLE.
and we tend to hold folks accountable and responsible for their incompetence, wrongs and neglect.
Posted by: | October 03, 2006 at 09:25 AM
"What can you say?" Well Charlie you could talk about the pressures that build for closeted gay politicians. You can talk about those pressures surfacing in pathological behaviors like Foley succumbed to. Or those that plagued Jim Mcgreavy. Take a good look into the life of Harvey Milk and try to understand the healthy tonic that is telling people what you are.

does anyone realize that the age of concent in DC is 16? i find it disturbing that foley could have had a sexual relationship with these 16 and 17 year olds in DC and no crime would have occured. How disturbing is it that laws against internet communications are more severe than actually having a physical sexual relationship? I am in NO WAY excusing what foley. I am just distured by the fact that had he called them on the phone and invited them to his DC apartment for sex that no crime would have occured. Yet a communication sent by the internet constitutes a crime! what is the matter with our laws?
