Sink, Copeland get Daytona nod
The first general election CFO endorsement by a newspaper goes to Democrat Alex Sink, who got the blessing of the Daytona Beach News Journal. The newspaper said Sink's resume, "the likes of which are not often seen in Florida political circles," gave her the edge in the race for the powerful CFO position. The endorsment recognized Republican Tom Lee's record of beating back lobbyist influence, but said he did too little to stand up to insurance companies in the last legislative session.
It also endorsed Democrat Eric Copeland for Commissioner of Agriculture.

WAY TO GO ALEX!!!

Thank goodness one of these newspapers saw through the spin... Lee supported an insurance bill written by insurance companies and now they are bankrolling his campaign. We need Alex Sink. She'll be a truly independent leader who won't kowtow to big insurance.

whoopie doo, liberal paper for a liberal candidate.
Lee is leading by 8-12 points currently, and no liberal paper endorsement is gonna change that.

Liberal rag endorses Liberal candidate - guess her strong support of liberal wack-job groups has finally paid off. and all they could come up with for a reason was her job experience? I've been to EPCOT, does that make me qualified to run the UN?
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 11:23 AM
Alex Sinnk is the most QUALIFIED candidate running,
But then with the recent Signing Statement that the current Republican presnut signed - we now see that qualifications don't matter a whitt with this new Republican party.
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 11:29 AM
11:23, maybe they didn't like Lee's experience putting insurance companies ahead of Floridians.

Liberal Daytona Beach will not offset the mega- voters in Duval and NEFL; we love Tom Lee... Go Tom!
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 11:38 AM
Sink will fall well short because she's not Republican enough for Republicans or Democrat enough for Democrats.
Tom Lee 56%
Alex Sink 44%

stop making numbers up
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 12:05 PM
Alex Sink 59
Tom Lee 41
I can play too!
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 12:06 PM
This liberal rag also endorsed Eric Copeland for Agriculture commissioner, so please, please take the Sink endorsment for what it's worth, which isn't much.
As is often the case with this unflinchingly liberal editorial board, there will likely not be a single Republican endorsed this month in a partisan race.

Right......come back down to reality..
no way, Tom Lee is the front runner and will remain the front runner to win the election!!!

the funny thing is it is not playing its facts!!!
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 12:39 PM
Anyone see Sink's new commercial?
Any thoughts?
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 12:43 PM
I think it's great. The first guy with all that money is funny.
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 12:47 PM
So, it's a "liberal rag" when it endorses a Dem, but it is a great newspaper when it endorses an R?
Let's see what you'll say about this paper should they come down on Charlie Crist's side.
I'm saving your posts so you can eat them then.

Right on Gene. All these guys have anymore is their labels and worn out slogans.
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 01:18 PM
Gene,
If a liberal paper supports a liberal candidate, it is expected. Just like when a liberal politician supports a liberal politician. Or when a liberal organization supports a liberal candidate.
But when a liberal paper supports a conservative candidate, that is not expected, and makes bigger news. Same with the other things.
If the wall street journal endorsed Crist, it would be a yawn, if the Miami Herald supported Crist, it would be interesting.
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 01:29 PM
I find this editorial interesting...
They admit that both candidates are a good choice. I am with Lee because of his wide experience which not only emcompasses financial experience but also political.
Sink would get up there and be in over her head with the big boys.
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 01:41 PM
It is a well-known fact that, due to its long history and strong ties to the amusement industry, including the boardwalk, spring break, bike week, nascar, etc. that this paper is skewed toward circus freaks. So, no surprise in them endorsing a carnie.

oh please. lee's financial experience consists of spending sprees in tallahassee. i refuse to promote someone who changes his opinion as often as he changes his suits.
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 02:22 PM
1:41- "the big boys?" that's exactly what's wrong with Tallahassee these days- bunch of boys sitting around with their games. Thanks for convincing this independent to vote for someone new.
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 02:24 PM
2:24- like you really were going to vote for lee in the first place.
besides, you should base your opinion on the candidate's record not random blog comments.
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 02:36 PM
2:22- how about ushering a state budget through the legislature for the past 10 years. after all, the cfo is dealing with the state's budget and policy process.
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 02:40 PM
a state budget rife with waste and political contracts run amok? great record there.
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 03:05 PM
Having been a long time Daytona resident I would have benn SHOCKED if the morning urinal had endorsed ANY republican over a dem. THAT would have been news, this story...is not news.
Posted by: | October 09, 2006 at 04:04 PM
alot of these papers are in quite an awkward position.
They all endorsed Charlie Crist in the Primary and many of them endorsed Rod Smith against Jim Davis.
Do you really think they're "all of the sudden" going to reverse feild and endose Jim Davis now in the General?

Roaring 20's
In case you haven't noticed, Eric Copeland is closer in the polls than any of the other Dem candidates and he was up on TV first.
What a shocker that would be if he's the only Democrat (besides Nelson) who actually wins, or at least has a descent showing?

The domino effect is catching up to the GOP. They have inflicted too much damage on us all for it not to boomerang right back at them.
The Republicans not only enabled Foley, but they continued to feed Foley our children. They know it, he knows it and Foley will ultimately take many of them down with him. (no pun intended)
That being said, even with the rampant corruption and cover-ups, these crooked Republican politicians will sadly keep their blind following base of 30 to 40%. If these people haven't gotten it by now, they never will.
The good news is that average Americans are fed up with the way Republicans have mishandled everything. This "average" group of citizens includes Republicans, Democrats and Independents.
These average citizens will vote for real change in Florida. They will vote for qualified candidates with integrity. They will vote for Alex Sink, Skip Campbell and Eric Copeland.

Re: Domino Effect.
The Foley scandal is not having any effect on the statewide GOP candidates. Charlie Crist is way ahead of Davis in the polls because Crist has statewide name recognition and Davis doesn't. The other Republican candidates for the State Cabinet are all ahead of the Democrats in their respective races because they are riding on Charlie's coattails. The sad news is that the average American doesn't know jack squat about politics and blows whichever way the wind blows. But fortunately for the GOP in Florida , these 'average American' voters are gonna blow the way the wind blows for the statewide candidates and that's the way of Charlie and his gang.

Gene: it is "liberal rag", no two ways about it. And I'll bet you my left testicle they don't endorse Crist.
Posted by: Roaring 20's | October 10, 2006 at 09:08 AM
Moderate: So what? These same polls had Bronson barely beating a middle school teacher from Miami four years ago (and in case you're wondering, the Snooze-Journal endorsed that clown too). Spend ten minutes in Tallahassee and you'll quickly see that Bronson is well-respected by both parties and that any Democrat who has ever met him likes him.
This shouldn't even be a partisan race, that's how non-political it is. Yet because it is, the News-Journal will always go out of its way to find a reason to endorse the Democrat.
