Can you pass the tax test?

In announcing public hearings on property taxes, the Senate today launched a Web site for people to contribute their thoughts. There's also a 7-question quiz with such zingers as, "Since 2001, what was the total increase in special district taxes?"

Take the test here.

Holy $%#@ those cities and counties are raking in the bucks!

Question 8:

What percentage has the State Budget increased since 2001?

fy 2001 state budget was $45 billion

fy 2007 state budget is $72 billion

Answer:

The State budget has increased by 63% since 2001.

The State has been raking in the money too but I dont hear them talking about wanting to fix their own spending problem. dont get me wrong, many local govt budgets have increased too much and are bloated. the state budget has increased too much and is bloated. why dont the legislators start somewhere where they can really make a difference, like cutting the state budget.

County taxes up over 80%. It's a disgrace. We should hold our county commissioners and city council members accountable. I'm writing mine today.

The state has been raking it in, but there is less of a spending problem...of that $70b in 2006, $7b went into savings.

Gov. Bush shifted much of the tax burden to the locals - as he should have - because not only are many seervices ultimately their responsibility, clearly they've been bringing in quite enough revenue to cover things.

Remember, much of Tallahassee's revenue source are consumption taxes - growing budgets at the state level are a direct result of a strong economy.

Taxes are out of control and we are fastly losing our competitive advantage as a low cost of living state. This has fostered our growth but is diminishing.
