Rep Rivera: "Jeb Bush College of Education"
Controversy over the UF faculty's recent snub of former Gov. Jeb Bush seemed to have died down, but Rep. David Rivera revived the issue Tuesday with a proposal to name the university's college of education after Bush.
Rivera said his proposal, which passed the House Schools and Learning Council, was sparked by the UF Faculty Senate's rejection last month of a proposal to give Bush an honorary degree.
Honorary degrees are a common gesture between universities and public officials, artists and the like. But some faculty said their vote reflected dissatisfaction with some of Bush's policies on higher education. UF president Bernie Machen was surprised and called the move a "mistake."
UF Alumni leaders tried to soothe any wounds by naming Bush an honorary alumnus within days of the degree snub. But Rivera said his proposal goes even further, honoring the goverrnor who made education a focus of his tenure.
Rivera also wants to name the president's house at FIU after former President Ronald Reagan.
No word yet on whether the Bush and Reagan amendments will make it into a Senate companion bill for the naming of university buildings. Rivera also wants

This is the same guy who wanted to revoke Medicare ans Social Security from any Cuban American Citizens who visited their family back in Cuba.
Isn't this the same guy who doesn't beleive in gambling but is running the slots campaign in Miami.

I love it! Those liberal professors will cringe every time they go into work.
Posted by: | April 10, 2007 at 12:47 PM
Great idea. Bush should be honored for improving the education system in Florida. Now if Bush would only run for Governor again. Viva Bush!!! Liberta! Liberta! Liberta!

Rivera you are the best, from filing suit against Jeb Bush over local Dade party rules some twenty years ago to this. Classico.

Crist will probably veto it. He wouldn't want his love-in with Florida Democrats to end so soon.

well they should name something for bob graham at the same time that way everyone is happy!! koom bay ya bla bla bla
Posted by: | April 10, 2007 at 01:26 PM
why don't they name the cafeteria after jebba the hutt? he certainly likes to eat a lot of food.
Posted by: | April 10, 2007 at 01:26 PM
Will they name the School of Arts and Letters in honor of that monkey in the White House? Each time that imbecile opens his mouth, he commits another terrorist act on the english language.
Posted by: | April 10, 2007 at 01:32 PM
And while Rivera's at it, why not name the criminal justice school after Columba ( tax evasion...) and the pharmacy school after Noelle and Jebby Jr??? As an FSU fan, I think that would provide real symmetry for those rightwing gator alumni!

Hey, lighten up… it’s not often you get so much praise for the treasonous act of intentionally destroying our State’s public education system in an effort to shift public funds into the hands of your corporate campaign contributors.
What’s next… renaming the Washington Monument after Osama Been Forgotten?
49th is better than 50th… I guess… Thanks Jeb, here’s a building and a free degree!
Pathetic…

Please get new democratic talking points "nicknames." We are aware that it pains you that Democrats will never regain power of Florida in the next 100 years, but your nicknames just make you look pathetic.

you want to see pathetic, take a look in the mirror.

Republicans said the same thing about the U.S. Congress not so long ago.
Given Charlie's relatively liberal agenda, his 80% approval rating should be troubling to Republicans.
Floridians and Americans in general are tired of the morally patronizing, narrow-minded, near-sighted and class-biased principles of the Republican Party.
If Florida Republicans don't get their act together you may share the fate of your federal counterparts.

Until the republicans start signing up en masse to fight in Iraq, to fight in this war that they so ardently support and that they so assiduously avoid, they will continue to be viewed with contempt and derision by the rest of us. The 2006 elections are just a taste of what is to come in 2008.

Please tell me what the hell this unhinged rant has to do with the story above...

3:52: The Ds are fixated on that war. They cannot accept that it is fought by volunteers, has cost far fewer casualties and we will be out of there soon. Unlike the egg they laid in Vietnam. But let them stay fixated. When we pull out of Iraq towards the middle pf next year and their candidates have no other platform to run on, we will have the last laugh.
Posted by: | April 10, 2007 at 03:59 PM
3:59,
You exemplify the problem with the entire Repugnant Party with your own words… to wit (as if)…
“When we pull out of Iraq towards the middle pf next year and their candidates have no other platform to run on, we will have the last laugh.”
To you, and pathetic life forms like you… The senseless loss of American lives is simply a platform on which to hang your political aspirations. What is it you self-indulged sycophants say? “Acceptable Losses”, just as long as we (R’s) win the election”
May God have mercy on your cold, black sole.

This not only from the guy who sued Jeb but called him gay at a Dade Republican Party meeting. David you are disgusting and are once again using the process for your own twisted reasons. Speaker Rubio would be better off without you and would probably get further in his politcal career without a snake like you by his side. You who threw President Bush and the entire Bush family for that matter under the bus on so many issues has the audacity to make this motion. There are many of us waiting for your time to end so that you can return to your tricks in Miami. You fool no one including Jeb Bush.

Be careful saying "black sole" might get you suspended for 2 weeks on CBS and MSNBC.
Posted by: | April 10, 2007 at 05:52 PM
Another sign of the arrogance of the Rubio/Rivera governing faction. They ignore the voices of the public, set their own agendas and amuse themselves by abusing the process.
Politicians should not be engaged in the business of imposing their will on others. They should reflect and represent the people that elected them.
I can't wait for these guys tp fade into oblivion. Just one and a half years to go!

The thing is that back in the pork chopper days they would have done something like this to teach the faculty a lesson: They're the legislature, and he can do any damn thing he wants if he gets 60 other house members and the senate to agree.
Posted by: | April 10, 2007 at 06:50 PM
I think I just threw up in my mouth a bit.
Posted by: | April 10, 2007 at 07:58 PM
I like David but he should get back to work on the house's tax reform package and stop worrying about naming public buildings after dead presidents and disdained former Governors.
Naming a state university College of Education after Jeb Bush would be like naming the school of human rights after Fidel Castro!

4:45 pm and 6:00 pm: Why such pent up anger and frustration? Could it be the miserable lives you lead? This is a great honor for Jeb and Rivera did the right thing. Kudos for him!

This is an excellent proposal. The left wing academics who live in an ivory tower will be cringing every time they pass the building named for the man who took Florida from an underperforming backwater of America to the brightest example of sun belt ingeniuty. Now only if his brother had half his brains......

UF better do this. All Jebba-the-hutt has to do is call big brother “Dubya”, and the whole damn school will be listed as enemy combatants and sent off to Gitmo.
That’ll show you who the big, well-fed, white, elitists bosses are.

Jeb Bush does not need a building or college named after him to know what he accomplished for education in this state. (though he deserves the honor)
He is a first class statesman.
There is no question about Gov. Jeb Bush's commitment or passion for improving the reading and skill levels of Florida's students, & also holding teachers accoutable for their achievement.
Though you may not agree with him philosophically terminator, your remark comparing him to a communist dictator was a cheap shot and way off the mark.
Gov. Bush's legislative legacy speaks volumes about his commitment to education; as well as his continued efforts evidenced by the Foundation for Florida's Future. A worthy cause and deserving of our support.
Posted by: | April 11, 2007 at 10:35 AM
Florida has one of the lowest h.s. completion rates in the U.S. This is great for a tourist-based economy, but not worthy of a College of Education being named in Jeb Bush's honor.
Maybe the Universal Studies human resources office could be named for Jeb!.

10:35 is mama Babs!
Posted by: | April 11, 2007 at 12:45 PM
Jeb sucks.
He got what he had coming to him.
like my mama used to tell me "you make your bed then you sleep in it".
Jeb's finding the bed he made isn't all that comfortable now he's out of power and no one fears him anymore.
It would be a disgrace for any Florida public school to bear his name (dead or alive)!
Even Charlie Crist (the so-called Jeb Bush Republican) has put enough distance between himself and Jeb you could drive a mack truck through it.

The Jeb Bush "Center For Children Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too"
Posted by: | April 11, 2007 at 05:28 PM
I believe the correct cliche terminator is:
You make your bed, then you have to lay in it.
Meaning that you must accept the results of the decisions you have made.
I am quite certain that Gov. Bush sleeps well knowing that hundreds of thousands of children in Florida's schools now read at grade level thanks to his dedication in reforming education.
Posted by: | April 11, 2007 at 09:05 PM
Yeah, I'm sure he does knowing he's siphoned off hundreds of millions of dollars to his unregulated and unaccountable voucher and charter school buddies like John Kirtley.
Even Sen. Webster is introducing new voucher schemes which are bound to be met with more lawsuits.
Ron Meyer already warned them we could always file suit against McKay or the Corporate program, so make our day!
Don't these guys ever learn?
They just don't get it!
Ps If you asked Florida schoolchildren how they feel about FCAT and Jeb Bush, I'm pretty sure the majority would say Jeb and FCAT suck.
Posted by: terminator | April 11, 2007 at 09:43 PM
terminator, you lack the ability to debate with reason & civility. You're comments are a perfect example of the status quo establishment.
Another reason why Jeb Bush wanted to take education out of the hands of people like you and hold teachers accoutable to a standard other than tenure and a paycheck.
Posted by: | April 11, 2007 at 10:20 PM
Who gives a flying rats ass what David Rivera wants???...maybe w/ the exception of Denise Grimsley!
Posted by: | April 12, 2007 at 03:17 PM
If the UF School of Education is finally named after Jeb I suggest the final bill should also said: The Jeb Bush School of Education at UF specializing in plagarism, resume fraud and the destruction of public education.
