The Herald's stringer in Tel Aviv
As any careful reader knows by now, the St. Petersburg Times and The Palm Beach Post were the only Florida news organizations that sent reporters to cover Gov. Charlie Crist's trip to Israel. But The Miami Herald still found an enterprising way to get a little coverage.
Rep. Dan Gelber, D-Miami Beach, fed observations and digital photos that the Herald put on its blog -- which, for obvious reasons, we will not provide a link to. There are limits. When Gelber gets back to Tallahassee, don't be surprised if he applies for press credentials.

Are we really this hard up for news?

“As any careful reader knows by now, the St. Petersburg Times…”
“… is a local version of the National Enquirer… and a bad one at that”

When did Bousquet and the Governor become best buds ?

Bousquet is just positioning himself when Vivian leaves...

12:34... it goes back to Steve's days in Broward....

oooh I sense a little bitterness between Times and Herald!

12:03 - are you stupid. Steve and Team Charlie have been in bed for over 2 years now.

Did Gelber school you on the b-ball court last night?
Posted by: | June 01, 2007 at 05:17 PM
What's the big deal? The Herald gets much of it's news fed to them by Gelber. This just proves what's been going on for years.

oh yeah, and one more thing, I think the Herald's decision was unethical.

From Naked Politics (Miami Herald political blog):
To the SPT: SHALOM!
Amid hard-hitting reporting about Gov. Charlie Crist's spider-bite recovery and posting of a prayer at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, the St. Pete Times takes a swipe at the Miami Herald's "enterprising" decision for 1) not going to Israel with Crist and 2) posting House Democratic Leader Dan Gelber's perceptions while overseas with Crist.
Compare the SPT piece today here with Gelber's here. Not much of a difference. So when the SPT asks if Gelber will apply for press credentials, is that paper also looking for a way to save reporter-junket money as well?

Let's cut through the muddle here:
The Miami Herald did not go on the trip to Israel because of budget cuts under new corporate ownership. Is Marc suggesting in his post that politican Gelber also should serve in the Herald's Tallahasse news bureau? Other papers did not go overseas to save money. Declining readership, lower ad revenue has put the newspaper industry on its back. This is a bad development. We need more reporting about government -- not less. Believe all can agree on that.

7:18 is right. What you really see here with lack of coverage is the result of major budget cutbacks.
Maybe you didn't care about this trip, but there will be plenty others when there is serious news taking place, and there won't be many, if any, reporters to tell you about it.
You won't like it when you don't know what government is up to,other than what the participants want you to know.
This is a big expense, but there are plenty of other smaller ones going undone that could mean something.

7:18 and 10:35 are right on. The Tallahssee Democrat is the worst example. Is it even a newspaper anymore?
