Florida captures mermaids
Ok, so it's not political news, but at Cabinet, DEP Sec. Mike Sole let drop that by next October, the state will be running the Weeki Wachee mermaid show and the water park as a state park.
Florida Department of Environmental Protection received notice on Monday that Weeki Wachee Springs, LLC plans to donate the springs and water park to the state. Read the letter here. The state would turn Weeki Wachee Springs into a state park and would keep the mermaids and their show.
"We're going to keep the mermaids?" asked Gov. Charlie Crist.
"Yes, sir," Sole said.
"Excellent," Crist said. (Photo gallery of mermaids / Video from Weeki Wachee.)
"We'll need to create a new position and title, though..." Sole said.
"Ok. What? You know what, stop, this is going down bad slope," Crist said.

OUTSTANDING!!
at least ONE remnant of FLORIDA will be intact and saved form the
bulldoze-and-pave crowd infesting the state these days!!

"We're going to keep the mermaids?"
Pretty much sums up the heights of Charlie Crist's intellectual curiousity, doesn't it?

Something is wrong with that picture… I don’t see Chuck!
Boy, this cat we call “Governor” is a real dipstick. Does he even live in this state anymore?

Well now that Crist is involved it will flop before the state can do anything to save it. He has not produced a thing he promised and is doing nothing but destroying heritage and history as fast as he can.

It is political! What happens to the incorporated city of Weeki Wachee and its taxing authority? Didn't see that addressed in letter.

I hear they're raising the price of admission to $240!
Now I understand the tax bill!
Thanks, Chuck!

Weeki Wachee as a state park would be fabulous, as long as the mermaids stay. I remember when Homosassa Springs becamse a state park, they wondered about getting rid of Lucifer the hippo as he was not native to Florida. Well, if the hippo can stay, so can the mermaids. I do believe that mermaids are native only to Florida anyway. I would swear to it, I'm sure!!!!
Long live Weeki Wachee!

They need to keep motor boats off of the river - it's amazing watching these rednecks drive a 200hp engine up a 4-foot deep, 10-foot wide stretch of the river.

The state has the money to make the park what it should be. Lets all pray that they really try hard to bring Weeki back to it's original success. Hip Hip hurrah!

Good for Charlie. Why do some of you people always have to be so hateful? Does everything have to be nasty politics? No wonder people outside Tallahassee like Charlie so much; they have a life beyond political posturing and slogans.

It's about time FDEP acquired that piece of property. Now let's see if the county, state, or city (of Crystal River) will acquire the land around Three Sisters in Crystal River, and save the last peice of access to Kings Bay for the rest of us. Now that area as a campground would be a godsend.

Fantastic news. I can't wait to see the mermaids march (?) on the Capitol in their purple shirts with the rest of the public employees.

It is about time that someone takes over Weeki Wachee. The current managers are two faced and let the public think they have the mermaids interests at heart. Notice in the letter of intent how the only jobs guaranteed to be saved are the "managers"? the mayor told the mermaids that "her job is secure" but they may need to "volunteer" to swim shows if they are really dedciated to the park.

To the previous Marcy with misunderstood information. As the current Mermaid Manager, I can assure you that Weeki Wachee department heads are doing all they can to ensure job security. In the 'Letter of Intent' the managers jobs are they only ones gauranteed, however, the attitude of the meeting that " I " was present for assured myself and my staff that 'mermaid volunteers' are not an option they are willing to negotiate. With this being said it would be much appreciated if any comments posted contained a disclaimer informing the reader that a theory versus actual fact was posted; especially when a false name is used.
