League of Women Voters opposes tax proposal
The League of Women Voters of Florida says the proposed property tax cut plan exacerbates inequities and will lead to less services for the public and infrastructure improvements. (news release here.)
"Save Our Homes is not based on ability to pay and has introduced a bias against more recent home buyers and non-homestead property owners resulting in large inequities in the taxes they pay," president Dianne Wheatley-Giliotti said.
The opposition is bad news for Gov. Charlie Crist, who is leading the campaign to pass the amendment, which would double the homestead exemption, allow for Save Our Homes portability and cap non-homestead assessments at 10 percent annually. This week, the Florida Education Association is expected to send its members a letter against the plan because it would take up to $3-billion from schools over five years.

they also support a state income tax.

There is nothing lost by the schools except for $70 million per year due to the tangible personal property exemption. SOH portability does NOT actually reduce the tax rolls by one penny. In fact, it has the potential to RAISE billions in general revenue (over a five year period) while suring up the real estate market.
Every time that someone says that the amendment only saves the average homeowner $240, ask them how much of that comes from the schools. The answer is $0. This amendment (if passed) would help the economy starting immediately while the posers out there claiming to want tax reform are really only about delaying the recovery of the state until 2009 or later.
If a company offered me $240 per year for the rest of my life, I would take the deal. The state of Florida has offered me that and MORE through SOH portability. I will be voting for the amendment as will at least 60% of the citizens who show up on January 29.

Rollback taxes and spending to 2002 levels, and expand SOH to ALL property both residential and commercial.
Problem Solved!

If the polls are correct, it looks like this Amendment will easily pass.
It has near 60% already not even factoring in undecided. Add those in, and this could pass with 70%+

If unions & the League of Women Voters do not support the amendment, then it is likely a very good amendment for the middle class.
I am definitely voting for it.
