Rubio's tax roadshow

UPDATE: A "Declaration Rally" is set for Dec. 17 at Miami-Dade County Auditorium.

The dates have changed, but Marco Rubio is still getting on the road to promote the 1.35 percent tax cap.

The Republican House Speaker from Miami will appear at a news conference 2 p.m. Wednesday outside City Hall in St. Petersburg. A stop earlier in the day is slated for Sarasota, followed by an appearance in Brooksville on Thursday. Still to be scheduled are events in Panama City and Miami Dade. (The original plan was for Rubio to make the rounds this Saturday.)

Cut Property Taxes Now, the citizen group behind the plan, is scrambling to collect more than 611,000 signatures by the end of January to make the Nov. 2008 ballot -- a feat even Rubio concedes is unlikely. Hey, there's always 2010.

The politicians had their chance at true meaningful reform. They blew it. Now it's the citizen's turn. Eliminate Property Taxes...Period. By removing all exemptions and exceptions from a consumption based tax and increasing fees on privileges such as licenses and registrations as well as adding service based taxes, there would be no reason to increase the state sales tax. Listen to the weekly Tuesday webcast by "Not Good Enough Florida" (google).
Do Not vote for the amendment, Rubio has apparently lost his spine.

Vote YES for the amendment!! No matter what or who has a great idea it will not be on a ballot this time. It's to late to qualify. The soonest it can be voted on is this time next year to take effect this time 2009!!!

Amemdment 1 on the January ballot is retroactive to Jan of THIS year-- 2007!

AND, if you moved from Jan 2007 forward and this amendment passes you can take your tax savings with you to your new home-----YES----- even if you bought this year and already closed---if this amendment pass they HAVE to go back and give you your savings from your old home!

No wonder the cities and counties are nervous and the schools are not telling the truth===they have already SPENT that money and more!!

Bill - where can I and everyone else I know join you? And why is this concept so hard for people to grasp? You are so right - on all of it! It is up to the citizens to take matters into their own hands. I hope we have enough that really do care to make things happen!

To no name at 8:50 - vote no. It's crap and most people know it. And you are mistaken. If a big enough movement is out there and gets the proper backing, it is not too late to get something on for Nov 2008. The time line is shrinking but it is still available...

Thanks, Marco. Let's kill what is on the table now and replace it with a proposal that we can't even vote on until 2010. This is what we need is something to stimulate the economy three or four years from now.

hey all you people against property tax cuts - leave me out of your debate - you want taxes to stay high then pay it yourself voluntarily - when's the last time you sent an unsolicited check to the state treasury? never? thought so, because for people like you it's so much easier to force others to pay for the government programs you want so you can get your "i'm a good person, see how nice i am" jollies.

Look beyond the smokescreen folks - the big winners in Rubio's plan will be businesses, 2nd homeowners, investors, and flippers. The losers will be you and me becuase our local services will get cut. That's the bottom line - the rest is just hype.

Give a starving man a Saltine, he’ll swear it a Ritz.

Anyone who buys the load of crap (tax break)… deserves to the big screw that will surely follow.

In January 2008 property yaxes are going down anyway. The Property appraisers review taxes every Jan. On Brightwaters Blvd. in Snell Isle. The last $5,000,000.00 house sold for $2.6 million dollars this automaticaly lowers taxes. All property taxes in St. petersburg should be $1.00 ayear. Mayor Baker from the baker crime family and city council have leased our prime water front property for a $1.00 a year. These people are fiscal idiots.

Why not just eliminate the property tax, move the school required local effort back to the state and charge user fees?

Roadshow? More like sideshow!

Although, the current Amendment 1 (supported by Gov Crist) does not do enough for relief, I will still vote YES. Let's get it passed and work to get much more meaningful relief.

The 1.35% tax plan is a great amendment that is similiar to Prop 13 in California that revolutionalized property tax relief.

VOTE YES on 1
VOTE YES on 1.35% plan
VOTE YES on all property tax relief.

Rollback taxes and spending to 2002 levels, and expand SOH to ALL property both residential and commercial.

Problem Solved!

Rubio's 1.35% plan doesn't go far enough. Let's take one step at a time. First, defeat this ridiculous Amendment. Because of the incompetence of the Governor and the State legislators, any tax reform/relief will be delayed. But, let's do it right. It's not going to happen tomorrow, but if we send the proper message by voting NO on January 29th, then we'll get real relief/reform for ALL homeowners. NO, NO, NO.

John - 11:45AM - what HAVE you done to WORK for property tax reform....

And what WILL you continue to do when this amendment fails(By the will of God and the people, thankfully) ?

What's your plan ? Has the work you have done so far to get tax relief been successful?

Gil,

The economy is in the tank now because of the policies that have been put in place by the Republicans that have been running the House, Senate and Governor's office for nearly the entire last decade. We need a fix now and not in two, three or four years. Amendment #1 will produce meaningful economic stimulus mostly due to the SOH portability. Pass it and see. Additional amendments can be placed on the ballot in November by the Legislature, Budget Commission or citizen petition, but we must pass this amendment now.

Rollback my REAR END to whatever lobbyist I came from so I'll stop cuting and pasting my spin.

Problem solved!

Vote "NO" on this! Why should there be a privilidged class of tax payer that gets to carry large tax credits from house to house? Please! People who have been on SOH ALL READY have had substantial tax relief. They don't need anymore! New and future homwowners are the ones that need the tax relief!

I am voting No on this. We need tax reform, not reduced revenue. We need to quit shifting the tax burden on new and future home owners. The only way to do this is a 1.35% tax cap. There is no reason for people that have been on SOH for many years to get tax relief! They all ready got it! If anything, they need their taxes raised and new home owner's taxes reduced..

Rubio is an idiot. His endorsement of Huckabee is proof enough of the intellectually void mind that currently resides in the Speaker's office. Rubio is a laughing stock.

12:44 - don't forget about the democrats who make up many of the city and county commissions that have been spending and raising taxes like druken sailors... and the democrat supporting unions that are more afraid to bring fiscal responsibility to their groups... and the democrats in congress that are wanting to pass legislation that will increase the price of fuel and the cost of our cars... and ... and ... and

Oh yeah, what about the 122 years the democrats had control of both houses in Florida... they didn't have anything to do with deep rooted entitlement policies of the aforementioned groups...

Right...

Rollback taxes and spending to 2002 levels, and expand SOH to ALL property both residential and commercial.

Problem Solved!

... gotcha!

Dave please pick one - "I'm a... 1.)developer 2.)realtor 3.)flipper 4.)out of state investor - and I made a bad business decision. Now please bail me out with a nice tax break at the expense of SOH."

If you are a 1.)senior downsizing 2.) resident new homowner. 3.) young family - then you have my sympathy.

To 3:46

I am a homeowner who pays $5,500per year in taxes for my condo and have a neighbor that pays $800 per year for the same condo. He bought in 1994, and I bought in 2005. I pay 3 times the taxes I should, and he pays 1/3 of the taxes he should even though he benefits from the same services.

Guess you should have supported the first amendment that would have eventually removed save our homes over a generation. Oh, yes, forgot. You didn't like that one either. All you want is no taxes and you will never see that one on the ballot. So while you are holding your breath----you will die.

2:33pm,

You are the idiots. Have you checked the polls lately. Speaker Rubio is not the only one to jump aboard the Huckabee Train.

Huckabee is leading in Iowa, South Carolina, N Carolina, Michigan, Georgia and moving up fast in the other states.
Nationally, he is in a dead heat with Rudy G.

I believe that putting $240.00/year into a homeowning teachers pocket will help education across the state. We all know that a better paid teacher teaches better. Vote yes! For the children.

Thank you, Dave, for your 2:27 p.m. post. Rubio is supporting this 1.35% plan because it helps investment home owners and recent homebuyers (who will eventually benefit from SOH if they will just stick around for a few years). Since the vast majority of Floridians fall into the category of folks who will be damaged by this amendment (if it is truly explained) and a 60% vote for the proposal is needed, the 1.35% proposal will never pass if the people really understand what it does.

Again, thank you for your post. It was honest and true, which has been largely missing from the blogs for a while now.

You are the idiots.
