Romney picks up some Thompson high rollers
Buzz hears a number of former Fred Thompson supporters -- including some top fund-raisers -- are joining Mitt Romney's campaign.
A formal announcement is expected to follow in the next day but the Romney campaign confirmed the addition of these folks: Former State Rep. Sandy Safley, Robin Safley, Brewser Brown, Foyt Ralston, Pete Dunbar, Clark Smith, Anita Mitchell. State Rep. Garrett Richter also was spotted at a Romney event in Naples yesterday.

Ha ha ha, watch the rats scurrying!

Yeah but Thompson himself is going to come out for McCain. McCain has also been endorsed by the likes of Gov. Frank Keating, Jack Kemp, Sens. Lott, Coburn, Warner, Former Sen. Phil Gramm, and former SOS Henry Kissinger. He has broad support from social, fiscal, and foreign policy conservatives. He has a record of taking on the establishment in Washington, and he will be Osama Bin Laden's worst nightmare. And most importantly (unlike with Romney), you know exactly where McCain stands on important issues.
Go McCain!

Haha, I know all of them and those are NOT big names St. Pete Times.

No way are these big names - just big egos!

I wonder why? Romney doesn't need hi rollers since he is, in essence, buying the nomination with millions of his fortune being put into his campaign coffers. His motto should be "if the camel doesn't go to the water, we will bring water to the camel". No thanks. My vote goes for the only guy who tells it like it is: McCain.

It will be interesting to see the voter turnout in Florida. I am so excited!
Since religion and politics is such a hot topic right now, and with Florida in the election spotlight, I was just wondering if anyone has heard of the film: “Article VI: Faith. Politics. America.” The film was directed by Bryan Hall and Jack Donaldson. It is an intense discussion of the role of faith in politics. The title is taken from Article Six of the United States Constitution: "no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."
If you haven’t seen the trailer I suggest you check it out:

(DVD’s just went on sale as well.)
Interested in any thoughts.

He's got you all fooled. By the way, Romney needed to pour some of his own money into his campaign to get his name out there. The others (except Huckabee) were household names coming into the race.
Mitt is the most qualified to lead our country right now.

Dan,
I doubt Romney is polling at 50%

yeah, good reporting st pete times REAL big names....what were they again?

John McCain is an angry, bitter old man who has made his career by selling out principles, stabbing his "friends" in the back (then posing for the media with the bloody knife) and working hard to advance the principles of the Democrat Party on the Republican side of the aisle. John McCain? With friends like him, who needs enemies? If he becomes the nominee, I'll write in my dog's name.
Posted by: | January 23, 2008 at 04:04 PM
The Media would like you to believe that McCain is WAY ahead nationally. THIS IS MISLEADING. The only NATIONAL POLL done daily is RASMUSSEN. It shows that McCain and ROMNEY are virtually tied for 1st place. The other polls; i.e., Real Clear Politics, etc are still using the averages. Next time you look at a poll, look at the RANGE OF DATES that the POLL DATA INCLUDES. Many of them go back to 1/9. A poll is only as accurate as the DATA INCLUDED. If you want CURRENT TRENDS, then ONLY LOOK AT POLLS TAKEN AFTER SC PRIMARIES; i.e. Rasmussen 1/20, USA Survey 1/20. These polls show ROMNEY and McCain tied in FLORIDA at 22.5% and Giuliani at 19%. They also show that Giuliani is loosing ground, McCain has leveled off, and ROMNEY is GAINING!
As for the INDIVIDUAL STATE POLLS, again, you have to look at the DATES. Most of the state polls are 1-2 MONTHS OLD. Some even older!!!

Why, if you are a Republican, would you vote for a RINO like McCain. He should take the tip from his best buddy Liberman and switch parties.

Go Mitt
I do not trust McCain at all
Posted by: | January 23, 2008 at 04:16 PM
4:11, you left out global warming, opposing tax cuts, slandering Don Rumsfeld....we could go on for a while!
Posted by: | January 23, 2008 at 04:17 PM
Manager Mitt? The most qualified? LOL. A patrician whom probably doesn't know the difference between a .308 and a .30-30. Or a gonghua cage and a punji stake. Or between Norinco and the Chinese Red Army. You bet McCain does.

What a joke - a bunch of 'old Gallagherites trying to make it...
Posted by: | January 23, 2008 at 04:17 PM
McCain's done. His RCP spread is down to +1.3 after the new Insider Advantage poll came out today. McCain can't survive in a primary where only Republicans vote.

Mitt romney officialy announced today that if elected he will adopt the title "Enemy of the Middle Class" and the corporate endorsements began rolling in.

Are these the same fundraisers who consistently kept Thompson's finance reports pinballing between embarrassing and anemic?
Thompson was competing with Huckabee for the "Least Impressive Fundraising" award this cycle.
Posted by: Campaign Manager | January 23, 2008 at 04:24 PM
Yes, ctr, knowing the difference between a .308 and a .30-.30 is probably the ultimate standard for judging qualification to be President.
A certain U.S. Senator has been a harsh critic of Bush and Republicans, has worked hard to block the nominations of highly qualified constructionist judges, has opposed tax cuts, supported amnesty and is on board with Al Gore on the global warming band wagon.
Is it Clinton or McCain? Actually, it's both. Does it not concern you that candidate running for the GOP nomination has a record that so closely matches Clinton? No thanks, McCain, I'm voting Republican!

Mitt Romney talks a lot about his expertise on the economy, but Florida voters would be wise to look at his record. Under Mitt Romney, economic growth in Massachusetts trailed the nation, job growth was third-worst in the country, taxes went up $700 million per year and 200,000 people left the state. That’s not the kind of leadership Florida needs today.

Knowing the difference between a .308 and a .30-30. Or a gonghua cage and a punji stake. Or between Norinco and the Chinese Red Army Is not going to help AMERICAN'S PAY THE RENT! Thats McCain's weakness. He answers all questions, TAXES, ECONOMY, ILLEGAL ALIENS, with . . . . this reminds me of when I lead the largest squadron . . . BLAH, BLAH, BLAH! We don't need a Squadron Leader AS PRESIDENT! We need a CEO!

4:25,
I live in MA. Before Romney was Gov. Massachusetts was referred to as, 'TAXACHUSETTS'. Romney changed all that. I'll take FEES any day over taxes. That way, You purchase the services you want, I purchase the services I want. I don't subsidize you, you don't subsidize me. I'd paid LESS TAXES UNDER ROMNEY! He left the state MUCH BETTER OFF THAN HE FOUND IT. THAT WHY I SUPPORT HIM!
Posted by: Boston Transplant | January 23, 2008 at 04:44 PM
So basically Romney picked up 10 more votes. Big whoop. Who knows who these folks are...and who cares.
They did great things fro Thompson didnt they.
Posted by: | January 23, 2008 at 04:52 PM
There is no guarrantee that Thompson will come out for McCain. McCain has military experience, but that is his only asset. Other factors are really liabilities: campaign finance bill, immigration failure and lax immigration attitude, not a tax cutter, etc. On global warming he's just wrong--bending to hand-wringing moderates/liberals to get their votes.
Romney may have changed one position and lack military experience, but he's got everything else and he's popping on all cylinders. He's also the best funded (include that factor in your odds for crossing the finish line.)

Isn't it interesting that Mitt Romney says he is TOTALLY AGAINST POLYGAMY - yet he lives his life looking forward to an afterlife where he'll be a SUPER POLYGAMIST with his own planet and his own Goddess Wives.
Mormon men are taught that after death (and if they are righteous) they will live forever as GODS over THEIR OWN PLANET - having unlimited sexual relations with MULTIPLE GODDESS WIVES so as to populate their own planet.
How can Mitt Romney say he is against something he believes is one of the greatest rewards in the afterlife. DO YOU really want a PRESIDENT who disavows something in his earthly life that he covets and aspires to in the afterlife?
Are you aware that Mitt Romney has performed death oath rituals hundreds of times in which he has drawn his thumb across his throat from side to side as if he were slitting his own throat and another where he has drawn his thumb across his abdomen as if he were disemboweling himself?
I am a former Mormon. I graduated from BYU. I was married in the Wash, DC temple.
I vehemently believe in freedom of religion. However, I am concerned that someone who professes questionable beliefs and who has participated in cult-like rituals involving grisly death-oath might become our President.
This information is not widely available to the general public. Mormons profess - what goes on in the temple is "sacred, not secret." Well if they are so sacred and "not secret" then why was I asked to make death oaths swearing I would not divulge what I had seen and experienced in the temple?
Visit my blog at http://justicefreedom4all.blogspot.com/ to see video re-enactments of the actual temple rituals and interviews with other individuals who also experienced the Mormon Temple rituals.
After participating in these rituals myself, I could no longer hold the Mormon faith in my heart and in my mind. As I exited the Wash, DC Mormon temple after going through the rituals for the first time I was asked by other Mormon's who accompanied me what I thought about what I had seen and experienced.
My response was that if those ceremonies/teaching were indeed of God, then I would rather go to hell with non-Mormons.
I feel that this information needs to be disseminated immediately. Voters must have this "sacred, not secret" information so they can make their own decisions about whether a practicing Mormon would be their choice under all circumstances of national security.
How meaningful will an oath of office be for someone who makes death oaths to their God in the name of their religion?
And what I find even more frightening - why is mainstream media treating these Mormon issues like the naked Emperor is marching by?
I can longer live in fear of the millions of Mormons who have taken the death oaths. Citizens of America have a right to the facts.

Mitt Romney is the biggest flip-flopping panderer.
He would say pretty much anything to get your votes. Look at what he did it Michigan.
pretty digusting to me

I was a life-long Democrat who switched to the Republican Party in 2000 to vote for McCain, but he withdrew from the race before he made it to Florida's Super Tuesday. Eight years later, I like Mike Huckabee but feel like I'm throwing away my vote if I vote for Huckabee over McCain. Therefore, I am going to cast my vote for John McCain. You long-time Republicans claimed that Ronald Reagan wasn't too old, so why isn't the same true for John McCain?
Posted by: | January 23, 2008 at 07:04 PM
Where'd all these Romney haters come from all of a sudden?
They have to be from another candidates' campaign.
Until today, I've seen and heard MANY folks saying that they'd vote for Mitt in FL (and elsewhere on the national media sites)...
Bill Bennett asked on his show for Fred Heads to call in and tell him who they'd back and I'd say at least 3 out of 4 callers were saying they were now voting for Mitt in FL.

Straight talk? Yeah, right. I'm an Arizona resident that is thanking the rest of the nation for stopping McCain's amnesty bill. They are finally cracking down on the illegals here and guess what? They are self deporting. McCain may know how to lead a squadron into a fight, but this war on terror is more than that. It is economic, social and combative warfare. McCain is missing 2 of the three defensive legs. Make him Sec. of Defense, but please Floridians, elect someone that can take on all the issues. Mitt looks like the one to go for. If you want high profile - Sheriff Joe from Maricopa Cnty AZ is supporting Romney - (immigration). You can't trust McCain on judges either!!
Send Mitt with a win so we can put him over the top here in AZ!!!

Dianne Pearce you just perjured yourself and are showing your true colors. Any oath whether on a bible in a court room or made to your country should be your word and your bond. You would have been better to have removed yourself rather than breaking your oath. "If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth" (Numbers 30:2). What else are you willing to lie about?

No friggin way I will ever vote Romney.
He's too slimy for me. I feel dirty just listening to him pander for votes.
Gives me the willies.
Trying to buy a nomination may work in other states, but won't work here in the Great state of Florida.

On the stump in economically struggling Michigan and South Carolina recently, Mitt Romney has been making the case that “it always makes sense to fight for every single good job.”
But this position seems to be at odds with the Republican contender's one-time role as chief executive officer of Bain Capital, a large private equity firm.
• In 1992, the firm acquired American Pad & Paper. By 1999, the year Romney left Bain, two American plants were closed, 385 jobs had been cut and the company was $392 million in debt. The next year, Ampad was forced into bankruptcy.
• Bain Capital and Goldman Sachs bought Dade International for about $450 million in 1994. The firm quickly fired or relocated at least 900 workers. Over the next several years, it sunk increasingly into debt and laid off 1,000 workers. In 2002 — after Romney had left Bain — it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
• A 1997 buyout of LIVE Entertainment for $150 million resulted in 40 layoffs, roughly one in four of the company's 166 workers. The job cuts affected all aspects of the company, from production and acquisition to legal and public relations.
• In 1997, Bain bought a stake in DDI Corp., a maker of electronic circuit boards. Three years later, Bain took the company public and collected a $36 million payout. But by August 2003, the company filed for bankruptcy protection, laying off more than 2,100 workers.

I'm urging all Thompson supporters to vote for Mitt Romney.
Thompson is a good conservative and so is Mitt. Don't let a liberal like McCain bring down the party.
I'm switching my vote to Mitt on the 29th.
