A very rare bird, that Rep. Don Brown
It's that time again. Back by popular demand is state Rep. Don Brown's Duck Hunt, the two-day Panhandle extravaganza of food, drink, fellowship, pheasant and quail hunting (and no doubt some quiet talk about all the terrible things Gov. Charlie Crist has done to the property insurance market in Florida).
Brown, a DeFuniak Springs Republican, is inviting lobbyists and others to sign up for the event the weekend of Feb. 22-23. Like other legislators who put on similar events, Brown has in his quiver a legal opinion that says lobbyist donations don't violate the ban on freebies because proceeds benefit area charities. It's all there at www.donsduckhunt.com, including the photo at left from the 2005 event. (Can we count on you, United Auto Insurance Co., to be a platinum sponsor again this year?)

HEY! Is that Burt Reynolds and John Voit in a canoe behind them?

What does United Auto want from this guy?

All you bozos....5:03, 6:27 and 7:16...I guess you are either, not at all involved in the process, or you're young democrats who don't remember when you were in the majority.
Those of you who think lobbyists and campaign contributions are the problem with the legislature are wrong! The problem is the failure of individual voters to take time to particpate in their government...

Don Brown- The leading conservative in the Florida legislature. This guy is a trip. Recently called Crist a 'demagogue'. Introducing Okalohoma style legislation to deal with the illegal immigrant problem. Realizes that the insurance crisis will never be fixed by the State insuring all the houses. Knows that the State has a spending problem. Actually votes against claims bills when presented. Love him or hate him, at least he votes based on principals and not on votes.

No, he does not drink alcohol at all.
Posted by: | January 05, 2008 at 10:51 AM
Imagine? A legisaltor who acts base on principles. The process rejects independent thinkers...too bad.
Posted by: | January 05, 2008 at 11:31 AM
The problem with the Legislature is term limits. Without term limits, an independent thinker who was actually right in bucking the leadership would still rise in the ranks of future administrations because they wouldn't want a worthy adversary within their own party, with term limits, independent thinking is punished with a total destruction of the short term allowed. There is no time for such independent thinking to get recognized as real leadership and courage.
I am not a conservative or a Republican, but I respect Rep. Brown for his vote on the insurance bill in January. He told the world that it was a bad deal and then voted against it. Marco took away his leadership position in Tallahassee, but then went home and claimed that the "insurance lobby" took over the Legislature with a bad bill for Floridians. How the press let him get away with this, I will never understand.
If we could get rid of or extend term limits, it would be a good thing for the citizens of Florida. Phil Handy sold us a bill of goods. Term limits will help the average citizen while curtailing the power of parties and lobbying groups, he said. The reality is that big lobbies such as homebuilders, big business, big insurance, etc. have never been more powerful.

The really amazing thing is that this introduces pheasant hunting to Florida.

This is for charity not politics. Good for him shaking down lobbyist for non political gain.
Posted by: | January 05, 2008 at 05:40 PM
Don Brown votes only with the insurance companies. Trust me, he is one of the big reasons why we have insurance problems in the state of Florida. He voted against every effort to curb insurance companies. He still is working to keep prices high.

I thought scientists determined that DeFuniak Springs is not part of Florida.
Posted by: | January 06, 2008 at 02:57 PM
how can you not like a guy that is third man on the deal team...last to know?
Posted by: | January 06, 2008 at 03:46 PM
What does that mean 3:46?
Posted by: | January 06, 2008 at 05:26 PM
One of the candidates to replace him wouldn't even be allowed to go shoot birds. I hear he has a felony arrest in his past. Felony = no guns or civil rights.
This makes me wonder, how can he even run?
Posted by: | January 06, 2008 at 06:53 PM
self-explanatory
Posted by: | January 06, 2008 at 06:56 PM
I hope Cheney accepts his invite. A few less GOPs, lobbyinst, and duck hunters would be fine with me.
Posted by: | January 06, 2008 at 07:50 PM
5:26 - third wheel (behind J & J)...not a decision maker...non-threatening...spectator, not a player.

Trey Price is the real deal. He can drop the hammer if need be.
