Budget woes close higher ed doors to minorities

Between 40,000 and 60,000 students - many of them minorities - could be denied an education in one of Florida's 11 public universities, thanks to years of insufficient funding and complicated political factors that have college presidents preparing to slash enrollment for the first time in decades.

So concludes ENLACE Florida, a grant-funded group that promotes college access and readiness for minorities, in a report sent today to lawmakers and education officials across the state. Read more here.

Reminds me of the old joke about the New York Times Headline after World War III begins..."Nuclear Bombs Strike America: Women and Minorities Hit Hardest"

If there is a budget cut, dosent this affect white students also? Its seems that whites love to play-up the race card and exploit minorities when suits their purpose more than any other group.

A more apt title for this report would have been: Florida's budget woes threaten to leave black and brown Floridians behind !

We need real leadership in the Legislature to keep this from happening. Marco Rubio needs to get off the bench and get in the friggin game !

truly tragic

of course, they can always enlist in the army and go fight the chimps war in vietraq, then,if they come back intact, go to college on the g.i. bill.

unless the army stiffs them as well, which i understand has become quite commonplace.

since tuitions are supposedly so much lower in florida universities, are there a lot of students from other states coming here to attend?? expect some bloggers have all the data on this & could share same with us.

GOP need to realize when enough is enough and back off on the destruction of our government through tax cut giveaways. These politicians have been handing out tax breaks like drunken sailors with little regard for the effects it will have on education and services. Low Income families that need education assistance can vote just the same as everyone else does. Lets see some DEM turnout for a change and vote these selfish, destructive elites out of office.

dear ed:

florida WHACKS outofstaters big time on tuition

check it out

Jeb Bush was soooooo good for the state.

Maybe when we finally stop worrying about someone's color, handicap, sex and any other distinguishing characteristic and actually require AN INDIVIDUAL to be able to perform to THE SAME as every other, this crap will stop. I am sick to death of how the US nitpicks everything to death along these lines.

boy you can tell this strand is attracting all the bleeding heart liberals today.

whine, whine, whine....throw us a bone and give us something for nothing cause I'm black or brown.
give me a free handout cause if you don't you're a racist....blah, blah, blah.

this is a total crock of *hit and the reason many minorities are in the position they're in (expecting something for nothing).

Florida has this fantastic program called the BRIGHT FUTURES scholarship program that's a MERIT based scholarship meaning ANYONE can qualify for it if you get at least a 3.0 GPA.

But of course that's racist cause we can't expect minorities to get a 3.0 cause the schools they go to aren't good schools, the teachers that teach there aren't good teachers, the system discriminates against them.....blah, blah, blah.

Try getting off your butts guys and get a job. Try being a good parent and actually being involved with your kids life. Try visiting the school on a regular basis so you can find out what's going on.

Try signing up for the Florida Pre-paid scholarship plan so you can lock the price of tuition in today (planning ahead)?

I know there are many minority kids and parents who do their job but there are many more who don't (as evidenced by the TV news every night and the parade of black/brown faces on the crime blotter).

So take you're whiny *ss *hit and go call Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton cause the rest of us don't give a rat's *ss about your sorry self!

Fat chance. Admission isnt decided by performance. Enrollment goes to benefactors kids, politicians kids, foreigners with deep pockets, athletes, and the usual endangered species who whine the most.

No. White kids with good grades and test scores, but no money or pimps, will go to Pixley-Hooterville Commuter College instead of Florida Party U.

Hey, I got my BS in Land-Use Law at Pixley-Hooterville Commuter College. Our Greased-Pig Varsity Team was State Champs 16-years in a row! Both my sister and I met our spouse at that college. If you don’t believe me, ask our son… he’s the one over there… with the third leg and talking to the stop sign.

This is not a racial issue. GOP tax-cutting insanity will destroy our education system for all Floridians equally.

that's funny.

I've got two daughters who are getting a wonderful education at my alma mater (FSU) and shy of what I paid into with Florida pre-paid, I barely have to pay a thing thanks to Bright Futures.

this is all part of a concerted push by the academic eggheads (university presidents and BOG) to jack up tuition rates so they can reward themselves with six figure salaries and goodies like research endowments.

they think by doing so it will make the Florida university system into Haarvaaard, Yale, Princeton or Duke.

tell Machen, TK, Hitt, Brogan and Genshaft to keep their mitts off our hard earned tax dollars.

say NO to higher tuition rates!
