Rubio won't back down on taxes for Pruitt
Senate President Ken Pruitt has said the Senate does not want to wrangle again over property taxes. But that will not stop House Speaker Marco Rubio from trying.
“I understand if they don’t want to hear it ... it won’t happen,” Rubio said today in an interview with the St. Petersburg Times editorial board. "But we have to at least be able to say we tried, that we recognized the circumstances our state is facing economically, that we understand the challenges and the opportunities that we have and we did everything we could in our time there to make those things happen.
"Ultimately if the Senate doesn't want to do it, we’re not going to be angry. We have to accept that's how a bicameral process works. But I can’t allow those pronouncements to be what sets our agenda."

Ken Pruitt should remember how he got where he is and how quickly he can end up somewhere else. You are working for the people, not for yourself up there.

Thank you for trying, Marco.

RUBIO FOR GOVERNOR!
Posted by: | February 28, 2008 at 01:17 PM
Rubio, keep fighting for the citizens of Florida. We need Tax Reform and the Gov. and Legislators have lined their own political pockets and failed those who they represent. Florida is shameful and in shambles.

With all due respect, Mr. Speaker, I can not imagine what proposal you would come up with that you have not already supported.
Posted by: | February 28, 2008 at 01:26 PM
They have more than enough to deal with, with budget cuts, to get into another fight with no resolution.
Sometimes kids just like to fight, and sometimes that's OK; they work things out when the dust settles.
But Pruitt's a grown-up, who knows there are more productive ways to spend time.
And believe me, NO ONE outside Capital Circle knows whether the HOuse or Senate did whatever. The vast majority of voters just don't differentiate between the two like that.

jackie,
Rubio is one of the Legislators!
Posted by: | February 28, 2008 at 01:34 PM
thank God for the grown-ups.
Posted by: | February 28, 2008 at 01:37 PM
thank God for the Senate.
Posted by: | February 28, 2008 at 02:12 PM
2:12 - yes exactly - thank god the senate is there to make sure the state keeps more of my money - whew, can't actually have people earn money and keep it, no way no how!

smart move by Rubio.
Pruitt is being herded into a corner.
He thinks he's going to become Ed Commish but Marco's going to ruin his future career prospects.
Pruitt and the Senate don't want any more tax reform?
That's ok but the voters will know who didn't and then it's going to be curtains for your political career Kenny boy!!!!!
What's the old saying about paybacks are a *itch?

"so we can say we tried" --
great, so you're going to waste time and effort during session for a proposal you know will fail ...
just so you can add it to your talking points?
Posted by: | February 28, 2008 at 03:12 PM
The Senate kept the House from going nuts with an irresponsible, unpredictable plan last year ... Good to see Pruitt is willing to stick to those guns.
Posted by: | February 28, 2008 at 03:15 PM
Mr. Speaker please speak further on the issue of property taxes.
There are regular folks who are paying more than what it cost to provide government services. We are also paying for various pet & pork projects as well as continuing to be forced to subsidize growth that does not pay despite what the developers and the majority of our commissioners say.
The plan former Senator McKay is pushing is a step in the right direction.

Great move by Rubio and to some degree parallel to Crist.
Golly gee we wanted to lower taxes and double the homestead and build new schools and pay teachers 100,000 a year and give you free cable - but gosh darnit those
Rubio "Senators"
Crist "Legislators"
wouldnt let me - -

Bravo to Speaker Marco Rubio for supporting Floridian's wishes.
We'll know who to blame if nothing is done.
Posted by: | February 28, 2008 at 03:32 PM
Keep fighting Marco. The weaklings in the Senate are trying to be meaningless moderates.

Ken Pruitt & the Senators will pay dearly if they go against the will of the people.
Jan 29th was a mandate to LOWER OUR PROPERTY TAXES!

RUBIO for Governor!
RECALL CC!!
Posted by: | February 28, 2008 at 03:47 PM
They "fixed" property taxes the first time and mine went UP.
They "fixed" property insurance and mine went UP.
They "fixed" PIP and mine went UP.
They "fixed" property taxes the second time with "amendment 1" and sold the voters a bill of goods and now the Governor admits that property taxes are going to have to go UP!
The Senate President doesn't even have a college degree (he has a waste water certificate from a community college) and he wants to be Sec. of Education (if he can get the Florida Constitution changed).
The Governor is too darn busy running for VP to run the state (surely he's run out of annual leave by now) - so who's running the state? Oh yea - the Republican Party.
Let them eat cake is what they are telling us.
Kick the bums out is what we need to say to each and everyone of them!!!!

Let Speaker Rubio know we want his a*s to get to work on Property Insurance, and stop trying to divert attention away from their failure to date.

There is a much bigger problem with property insurance than with property taxes for those of us who own a homestead. We are the ones who vote. Fix it now.
Posted by: | February 29, 2008 at 11:42 AM
I think that Rubio would make a great dog catcher in a local city that cut that position because it was rightsizing.
Posted by: | February 29, 2008 at 11:44 AM
Termie would make a good clean up man to follow the mounted police in a town that keeps the position.
Posted by: | February 29, 2008 at 11:56 AM
11:42 is absolutely right---I hear no one complaining about property taxes; but insurance is through the roof. Sure, we all have homestead---but we're also the ones who vote.

1:03pm,
Are you kidding? Have you seen the polls. Property taxes have constantly been the number 1 issue that Floridians want reformed.
As a taxpayer, I want to see meaningful property tax relief. I also want to see spending caps put in our Constitution.

New Citizen's Initiative to completely repeal all Ad Valorem Tax (Property Taxes)

opinions?
It would really make it fair for all property tax payers

Has this guy never heard of the word "team"? The clock is running out on the Lone Ranger's Mini-Me...and not a moment too soon...think of what could have been accomplished if he actually worked with the Governor and Senate President instead of against them...
Posted by: | March 01, 2008 at 04:27 PM
The problem is Gov Crist has reneged on his promise of "dropping taxes like a rock"
Speaker Rubio is trying to get the people what they want: MEANINGFUL PROPERTY TAX RELIEF
Posted by: | March 01, 2008 at 05:19 PM
The blog headline says that Rubio won't back down to Pruitt on taxes, but the history is a little different on the issue.
