Education overhaul close to Senate vote | Main | House passes 'guns at work' bill »

Last-ditch effort to stop guns-to-work

Florida's top business organizations have made a final, direct appeal to House members who are slated to take up the guns-to-work bill today.

"Attempts to water down constitutional property rights and employer – employee contract negotiations in favor of gun owner rights can only be viewed as an attack on the business community and the jobs it creates and sustains," reads a letter signed by Mark Wilson, Rick McAllister, Barney Bishop and Carol Dover.

"We have seen no egregious examples of gun rights being denied. No problem currently exists in Florida worthy of the proposed big government solution mandating less freedom, less property rights and more regulation. We respectfully ask that you vote “no” on this bill and invite the rifle association to stand with those of us who want smaller government, less red tape, fewer lawsuits and more personal freedom. Please vote no on this over reaching legislation."

Still, it appears the measure is headed toward passage, given House leadership approval of the amended version of the bill. Only employees with concealed weapons permits would be protected under the bill.

"I think the issue has been refined, not to a level where you're going to have the Retail Federation support it, but certainly it's a much better piece of legislation than it was just a year ago," House Speaker Marco Rubio told reporters yesterday. "I think individuals who have concealed weapson permits are by and far very responsible gun owners."

STOP DIVERTING ATTENTION AWAY FROM YOUR LIES AND FAILURES, AND FIX INSURANCE LIKE YOU PROMISED “THE PEOPLE”!

Do what you want legislature. As soon as this bill gets signed, I am firing every one of the employees I have that carries a gun and keeps it anywhere on my property.

Smart move. You always should fire well-armed people because they are exercising their constitutional rights.

Genius.

This is Crazy!

Can anyone tell me... that if you have a perp pointing a gun at you, HOW IS THAT GUN, THAT IS LOCKED AWAY, IN YOU CAR GOING TO HELP YOU?

Protect my REAL Property Rights!

NO GUNS AT WORK.

Well, you can fire anybody for just cause in FLorida, so heck, if a business owner wants to fire someone for the heck of it, so be it.

If the whole purpose of this bill is to arm people incase of external threats or even internal threats, when hire security guards. That is what they are there fore. That is fine with me.

How many maniacs do we work with inside of 'work' are ticking time bombs waiting to go off? If everybody brought in guns to protect themselves, then everybody is target and now you've created a mess. Who else is going to get hit in the crossfire?

Genius.

And I am exercizing my right as a businessman to hire and fire whom I please when I please.

Besides if one of them flips out, my wife will get a nice life insurance policy as well as whatever lawsuits she will file.

Is it true that Black on White Crime is 139 times Greater than White on Black Crime?

Google it!!!!

1:40 - I already work for you and I currently carry a weapon in my car... you just don't know it... and you will never know it.

1:58 better do the best you can to make sure I never do find out or else your through and working somewhere else.

republicans are gonna regret going up against business. Who funds their campaigns?!? Not the nra...

1:43 are you for or against? Seems like you're suggesting that firing armed employees (within an employer's constitutional rights, btw) could lead to tragic consequences. More reason to defeat this ridiculous pandering for campaign contributions.

Shame on all who support this.

1:38 are you serious? every single thread.

support the Florida Chamber, forget about due process and that ridiculous illegal search and seisure garbage. Who needs that anyway.

2:22 - they get plenty of money from other sources...doctors, lawyers, realtors, etc. They will gladly will the void...if ther eis a void which I doubt.
