Obama pastor event in Tampa canceled
TEMPLE TERRACE -- Appearances this week by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. at the Bible-Based Fellowship Church of Temple Terrace have been canceled, the church's pastor said today.
The Rev. Earl Mason said the three-night revival featuring Wright was turning into an "event" and media circus, rather than the celebration of the church's 10th anniversary that it was intended to be, so Mason asked him to stay in Chicago. Wright, the former pastor of presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, has drawn national attention in recent weeks over inflammatory remarks he made from the pulpit, which Obama has disavowed. This week's revival was to have been his first public appearance since the controversy erupted. More here.

OBAMA DOG NIGHT:
Jeremiah was a preacher
He was an inspiration of mine
Now I never heard single controversial word he said
But he helped me get street cred
And in Chicago that's a real hard sled
But now
Reverend Wright is gone
Like Dracula at dawn
He sleeps with the fishes in the deep blue sea
So typical white people can vote for me!

White people like Obama because he makes Bryant Gumble look like Malcolm X.
Posted by: | March 25, 2008 at 04:49 PM
There was likely to be a lot of protest out there had the event taken place.
Posted by: | March 25, 2008 at 04:52 PM
I think the posters here prove that point.
Posted by: | March 25, 2008 at 05:29 PM
There is no question that Rev. Wright's comments were despicable and loathesome.
However, it's sad that Obama has to apologize for his preacher's comments while John McCain begs for the endorsement of equally ignorant and bigoted pastors like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell who have said not "God da_n America" but "God has dam_ed America."
Might that double-standard actually reflect the very racism Rev. Wright was railing against, albeit in a very ignorant fashion?
Posted by: Flagophile | March 25, 2008 at 05:36 PM
But they are/were not McCain's pastor(s). Something you lefties seem to want to ignore.
Posted by: | March 25, 2008 at 06:10 PM
That's not all they ignore. Nobody is "begging" for Falwell's endorsement because Falwell is deceased. Robertson endorsed Giuliani and is known to hold a grudge against McCain. Why? Because McCain in 2000 by name condemned the influence of Falwell and Robertson in the Republican party. That's one of the reasons McCain was on the outs with many Republicans. Obama for 20 years was a member of Rev Wright's congregation. For him to say he was not aware of Wright's views, his vociferous sermons and his racist demagoguery is nothing less than incredible.

5:36- The issue is that Obama didn't seem bothered by this type of vile, divisive hate-speech by HIS CHOSEN spiritual adviser and mentor. He chose to stick around for 20 years and listen to that garbage. If it was offensive to him, he could have left that church. He didn't. And just like Obama's kids, another young generation is poisoned against white people. So no, it's not like the other religious leaders who spout their opinions and endorse a candidate. Obama and his rev have a close, personal relationship. It's not the same.

The issue is that Hillary doesn't seem to mind husband repeatedly cheated on her - in their home, while she was there - no less than 9 times.
She CHOSE to stay married to him, because keeping the Clinton name is the only reason she is even talked about today, much less elected to the US Senate.
If it was offensive to her, she could have clearly left him.
Hillary and Bill have a close personal relationship.

Bravo to the TPD and HCSH for refusing to give this turd a police escort from and to the airport nor provide any more than three officers for the security detail.
I suspect Mr. Wright (a virulent racist and militant anti-American) may have been in for some tough sledding had he chose to speak in Temple Terrace.
Most likely the Obama campaign has put the good Pastor Wright in mothballs for the foreseeable future.
He can go back to South Chicago and hang with his buddy Louis Farrakahn.
I'm sure Obama's familiar with the swiftboat campaign. Should he receive the D nomination he's going to get "wrightboated"
Posted by: terminator | March 25, 2008 at 10:24 PM
If he would G-d Damn America here, he might have a totally different reaction from his audience. It is very good he did cancel. MLK would not be proud of this man.
Posted by: | March 25, 2008 at 10:29 PM
The best part is the Dems are still going to nominate this guy! Let me break it down for the O-bots:
Its not about what Wright directly said anymore. That just drew attention to what his church was based on. Guess what? Its founded on a little known marxist, black supremacy belief system know as Black liberation Theology (I strongly suggest you look it up). Obama joined and stayed at this church for 20 years because he agreed with their message. That makes Obama look like a racist too more and more people who are learning this everyday. In politics, this is a fatal flaw and especially for Obama because it questions some of the very reasons people are drawn to him. Obama is over and you refuse to see it.
Keep saying its a swiftboating. Before it's too late, nominate the imaginary bullet dodger. This is like watching a car wreck.

Is this the same church Katherine Harris attended?

I see rev. Wright as being the voice of christianity, YOU CHRISTIANS SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF FOR LETTING THIS GUY JOIN YOUR CULT.

His Church celebrates Kwanzaa
http://www.globalpolitician.com/24157-elections-obama
Posted by: | March 26, 2008 at 07:17 AM
Kwanzaa was invented in 1966 by a black radical, Ron Karenga, aka Dr. Maulana Karenga. Karenga a former black militant, a Marxist and a convicted felon was a founder of United Slaves, a violent nationalist rival to the Black Panthers. Claiming to have the unity of black people in mind, Karenga committed most of his crimes against blacks. Just five years after his invention of Kwanzaa, he was convicted of torturing two black women by stripping them naked, beating them with electrical cords, placing a hot iron into the mouth of one and mangling the toe of the other in a vice. During the ordeal, he forced them to drink detergent. See: Why Black Christians Shouldn’t Celebrate Kwanzaa by La Shawn Barber

Whether they were McCain's pastors or not, the fact is that McCain has sought the endorsement of Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson.
It's also true that both Robertson and Falwell are ignorant hate-mongers who have said, in substance, that God da_ned America because of homosexuals, American lifestyle, etc.
It's also true that endorsements reflect on the candidate because it is perceived as a reciprocal endorsement by the endorsee of the endorser's views. If that wasn't the case, than why did Obama have to reject and denounce Farrakhan's endorsement? Farrakhan wasn't his pastor.
Falwell and Robertson are/were equally as repugnant, if not more so, than Rev. Wright. Rev. Wright at least has a reason to be angry. Lest we forget that he grew in an era where people like him were hung from trees simply because of their skin color. And, although we have made some progress racism is still alive and well in the U.S.
It's a double-standard. Pure and simple.
Posted by: Flagophile | March 26, 2008 at 09:26 AM
9:26 - you friggin idiot - "the fact is" that FALWELL's DEAD - how stupid are you?
Posted by: | March 26, 2008 at 11:15 AM
11:15,
Very insightful comment. Seriously.
Please explain how the fact that Falwell is dead is relevant in any way.
McCain sought his endorsement while he was alive. He gave a commencement speech at Falwell's Liberty University on May 13, 2006. Falwell didn't die until May 15, 2007, almost one year later.
Posted by: Flagophile | March 26, 2008 at 11:22 AM
flagofile. Obama may have rejected his Farrakhan's enodorcement, but his church's magazine, the Trumpet, can't stop giving him enough love (http://www.trumpetmag.com/current_issue.cfm). Obama is a walking, talking double standard.
Posted by: | March 26, 2008 at 11:43 AM
I am not saying that Obama wasn't wrong.
All I am saying is that there is a double-standard.
Obama has to apologize for Rev. Wright and denounce Farrakhan, while McCain seeks the endorsment of equally bigoted and ignorant people like Falwell and Robertson.
Why are you people so hard-headed?

He denounce all he wants. all that does is make him look more and more like a liar as more ties to him and these extremists are pointed out. But, I'm sure he never even knew the church had a newsmagazine, but now that its out there he will call on all of us to examine race relations in our own lives. Nothing but an arrogant hypocrite

BTW, Mccain had denounced the people you mentioned and they endorced him on his terms, not theirs. I don't think Obama can claim the same thing at all

12:10,
You are wrong. He denounced them in 2000 and his assessment then, likening Robertson and Falwell with Farrakhan as intolerant bigots was spot on. This time, he tucked his tail and sought, or at least, accepted their support.
The fact that he has not changed his positions on the issues is wholly irrelevant. Obama has not changed his position on issues in order to placate Wright or Farrakhan.
Think of it this way: McCain himself grouped Falwell, Robertson and Farrakhan together. What would you say if Obama sought Farrakhan's support and went to deliver a speech at Farrakhan's university.
Give me a break.

That might not be a bad idea. It would get Clinton out of the way, and McCain could knock down the bigot Obama.
GOP has it all wrong. Obama is making it easier for them, not Shrillary.

Hey 10:12, you seem a little confused about my post. Nowhere in it did I defend Hillary Clinton for anything.
Posted by: | March 26, 2008 at 04:30 PM
flagofile. The problem you fail to see is that Obama's positions are the same as Wright's after listening to his "uncle" over the past 20 years. And lets not forget, Farakhan is Trinity's "Rev. Wright lifetime award" winner. McCain making nice with the religous right isn't even in the same ballpark, heck it isn't even in the same sport as Obama's association with know bigots and racists.
Keep drink the kool-aide of a man you know nothing about. We've just started scraping the surface on this fake.

Posted by: | March 26, 2008 at 04:35 PM
4:34,
Your post long on conclusory statements and short on substance.
McCain himself grouped Farrakhan with Robertson and Falwell. If you choose to ignore that now, fine. But let's not talk about Kool-Aid.
What would you say if Obama went to Farrakhan's university to curry-favor and give a commencement speech?
Posted by: Flagophile | March 26, 2008 at 04:42 PM
What would you say if McCain described his association with Robertson and Falwell like Obama does his with Wright?
"What I value most about Pastor Wright is not his day-to-day political advice. He's much more of a sounding board for me to make sure that I am speaking as truthfully about what I believe as possible and that I'm not losing myself in some of the hype and hoopla and stress that's involved in national politics."- Barack Obama

4:46,
For the last time, I am not suggesting that this is not a problem for Obama, generally.
However, your quote proves that Rev. Wright was more a spiritual advisor than a political one. That should be somewhat comforting to you.
Nevertheless, what would you say if Obama went to Farrakhan's university to curry-favor and give a commencement speech?
Your silence on that point is deafening.

You don't have to listen to talk radio to have very serious and grave concerns about Senator Obama's influences.
