Posey's daylight savings bill moves
There is no House companion, and still two more committee stops in the Senate, but Sen. Bill Posey got a small victory this afternoon when his bill to end Florida's participation in daylight savings time passed its first stop by a 4-1 vote, with Sen. Jim King opposed.
"The body just gets out of equilibrium," Posey said of the annual fall forward fall back tradition. "Our state would be better off not participating."
But King said in a state like Florida where the sunny days draw tourists, banning the practice makes no sense.
"For people who like the summer and the long days, daylight savings is a plus," King said. "For me, it's enough of a plus to live with the inconvenience of changing my clocks twice a year."

This is horrible. Why would we want to be on standard time all the time? We should buck the system and do just the opposite. Let's stay on Daylight Savings Time through the winter! Come on Posey! Let's focus on issues that matter!

not that I want to encourage the guy who posts in all caps about fixing insurance.
But this post would be apropos for his commentary.

That a way to tackle the tough issues Posey. You will do great in Congress.

Why are we doing this instead of fixing insurance and taxes? Are they trying to keep me in the dark for one more hour about what is really important in this town.

After waking up in the dark at 7:30 and taking my 5-year-old to school before the sun comes up the last few weeks, gotta say I'm with Bill on this one. Posey for Congress!

What a stupid bill.

Maybe next Posey will boldly sponsor legislation to switch traffic lights, so that we stop on green and go on red. Let us pray that he can summon the courage.

Posey should change his district to Atlantic time zone, then he could get one of those watches with two sets of hands like a real jet-setter...Brevard time & Tallahassee time.

Worst idea since Bring Your Gun to Work EveryDay.
Hey, here is another super idea: Give Posey a free ride into Congress.

Isn't daylight savings time ending anyway in a couple of years.
Posted by: | March 27, 2008 at 04:56 PM
This is totally backwards...
Posted by: | March 27, 2008 at 04:57 PM
When would happy hour be with this proposed change?

STOP DIVERTING ATTENTION AWAY FROM YOUR LIES AND FAILURES, AND FIX INSURANCE LIKE YOU PROMISED “THE PEOPLE”!
Posted by: | March 27, 2008 at 05:12 PM
There are other states that do not abide by Daylight Savings Time. Posey's idea is not a bad one.
Posted by: | March 27, 2008 at 05:34 PM
It is bad

5:12 - You're obviously very dramatic. I'll bet you scream at your wife and kids, and cry like a baby when you don't get your way. Ever thought of suicide, it is an option to your misery.
Posted by: | March 27, 2008 at 08:47 PM
Good idea - get our state out of sync with the rest of the nation and world so the tourists REALLY get confused trying to fly in and out of here. This has Russ's name all over it.

Does he not have better issues to tackle.
However the position of "sunny days" draw tourist is bogus though. I visit Puerto Rico quite often & enjoy their sunny days during the winter months as a tourist & they never change their clocks.

I agree with Senator Posey on this one. The extension of daylight savings time by Congress was absurd. The days will naturally get longer as summer approaches without switching the clock. Arizona doesn't participate in daylight savings time and it hasn't hurt tourism there, so that argument won't cut it. I hope the House takes up a similar bill and that we'll be able to end daylight savings time.

It's leadership like his that makes us the laughingstock. While he's at it, why doesn't he press to have the state moved to Mountain Time? Imagine Monday Night Football starting at 6:30! That would really improve my quality of life in Florida. Forget taxes and insurance reform and lets reform what time we live in. I think this post will let you know what time YOU live in - and it's not the present.

This makes all the sense in the world. Why in a hot southern State like Florida do we need the sun to set in June at 9:30pm instead of 8:30pm? Why do we need to wake up in the dark at 7am in March to patiently await the sun to come up?
There is no logical reason for daylight savings time for Florida. None.

It would seem to me the more appropriate time of year for DST is the winter not summer. Summer days are already longer. Wouldn't we want the extra light when it is less?
I've never understood this?

GO POSEY! For the first time somebody has stepped up to end this ludicrous STUPIDITY. For about half the year I wake up "upset"(for censorships sake) when I have to forcefully get up one hour earlier than usual. While this may have some kind of benefit for the sleepless, for the rest of the normal people it is a disaster. Not to mention the times when I woke up late and dangerously drove faster to make it to work on time. PLUS, I have noticed that i end up staying at work even longer! because I feel that it is still early in the day, just to go home with the sun still up to realize that It's almost time to go to bed!. I feel overworked, stressed and having less time to spend with loved ones. The ridiculous benefits do not outweigh the many costs and drawbacks of this policy. PLEASE POSEY continue the fight and people PLEASE open your EYES! stop trying to counter the system for no reason and support one of the few laws that actually MAKE SENSE!.

Daylight savings does not save anything, especially money. So, it is dark at 8:30, it is also light an hour earlier. Guess what, light at 6:30 AM means you don't need all of the light on in the morning.
It is time for the whole country to do away with this.
Oh, and genious at 10:47, PM. The other parts of the world that go on DST do not go on it the same time we do , and guess what----the airlines still manage to get them here.

Puting a end to Day Light savings time sounds like a good plan to me

I refuse to vacation in Florida if I have to think about what time it might be.
For those of you who have your electronic appliances set to automatically change with daylight savings time, you'll need to reset them to manual.

what time is it now?

If this is considered some sort of "Courageous Brain Child," no wonder the Republicans(I happen to be one) are in trouble (not to mention our country). Lets think of bigger picture problems like energy independence (ie. the courage to say we need to drill off the coast of Florida for oil, or in Alaska) or how about understanding some of the nuances of the housing mess, (ie. NO Pre-Payment Penalties to refinance your home loan, everywhere in America. Its Just UN-American!) You know, silly little things like that.... Bill M. (Kissimme, FL)
