CW Bill Young's district: "Hey did you read this week’s newspaper article about your congressman, Bill Young steering federal funds to companies where his sons are employed? $73 million! That’s just not right. That’s why I’d encourage you to write a letter to the editor expressing your outrage. And know there is another choice this year, Democrat Max Linn."

Young is not being naive about his sons. 3 of them graduated from college. One with a Masters Degree, one with a Bachelors degree and one with an associates degree. They all had many options as to what direction they would head in their lives. they are grown young men and have been given, by the United States of Ameica, there right to choose where they eat sleep live and work. Not any one elses. Everyone has a right to work anywhere they want and anywhere in this county would be some kind of conflict in the eyes of the times. [Read this and understand why democrats must be vote out]

The Democrats are now an officially protectionist party.

That much was made clear when Speaker Nancy Pelosi changed the rules of the House to avoid being forced to bring the Colombian Free Trade Agreement to a vote:

The Colombia trade pact was signed in 2006 and renegotiated last year to accommodate Democratic demands for tougher labor and environmental standards. Even after more than 250 consultations with Democrats, and further concessions, including promises to spend more on domestic unemployment insurance, the deal remained stalled in Congress.

Apparently the problem was that Democrats kept getting their way. So on Monday, President Bush submitted the bill to Congress over liberal protests, which, under a bargain between Congress and the White House for trade promotion authority, mandated an up-or-down vote within 90 days.

Today Ms. Pelosi will make an ex post facto change to House rules to avoid the required vote, withdrawing from the timetable and thus relegating the Colombia deal to a perhaps permanent limbo. Democrats say it would have failed anyway, but at least a vote during the next three months would have forced them to show the courage of their protectionist convictions. Instead, they chose to shelve the bill in an election year while paying off organized labor and other antitrade yahoos.

The gambit is especially humiliating for Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel, a free-trader who has been trying to strike a deal with the Administration but keeps getting rolled by Ms. Pelosi.
Objections by organized labor revolve around the fact that there is no more murderous place in the world for union organizers than Colombia. The right wing Colombian death squads believe that anyone who is pro union is also pro FARC or pro-communist. The paramilitaries target these organizers and have killed 17 in the last few years.

While making a good point, labor refuses to acknowledge the fact that the situation has dramatically improved over the last 6 months with the Colombian military on the offensive against both FARC and the death squads. This has brought hope that the civil war can be brought to an end and Colombia granted a chance to become a close trading partner with the US.

The fact is, Democrats killed this agreement because they want to roll back free trade agreements across the board. Quite simply, this is madness. For every job they "save" (a dubious proposition), 3 jobs will be lost as a result of reduced exports and imports as nations bump up tarrifs and protectionism becomes the norm.

The Journal is right to take the Democrats to task for not having the guts to show their anti-free trade side to the voters. That's because upwards of 60% generally support free trade - as long as the playing field is level.

Trade may become something of a campaign issue this year with McCain coming out for free trade while the Democrats become obstructionists. It should be interesting to see who the people support.

My my, there are a lot of very passionate people posting here as well, from both perspectives. Bill Young is indeed an icon, and he should be honored for his service.

That said; it is time for him to let go, and go with grace. We simply cannot sustain a modern and functional government with 30-year old ideologies. Neither does our current economy allow for pork spending of any kind. If these organizations are truly necessary for the betterment of our military, then fund them accordingly, and not by way of earmarks (pork).

I don’t give a damn where his kids work, but to assert that there is no connection is purely naive. That’s all I have to say about that.

Congressman Young, as a District constituent, I thank you for your service and appreciate your efforts on our behalf. But I respectfully ask that you move on, so that our nation can as well. As a Democrat, I have supported you and voted for you many times. Of late, primarily due to the lack of substantive opposition. But I fear that too has run its course. Sometimes change must occur for the good of the whole, even if it comes at the price of a public servant with an honorable record. Please consider my thoughts, and again, thank you for your service.

For your information, I got a GED because my mother was sick and I needed to take care of her. Now I am a licensed nurse and take care of critically ill children. Please don't put people down that have gotten a GED. Sometimes there are reasons for that. It also doesn't mean you have a low IQ because you got a GED. What is wrong with you, what is America coming to. A GED is equivalent to a high school diploma and allows you to further your education, as I did. No, not because the demand went up; but because the supply has severely dropped… and why? Because of greed. Once our government began their latest corporate welfare program known as subsidies for corn growers to jump on the knee-jerk bandwagon called ethanol… wheat farmers cleared their fields and started growing corn in order to capitalize on the government corporate welfare program. Good for a few, bad for the many. Supply depravation driving demand costs.

The story is about Youngs kids getting jobs, that they are no more quaified for than any other 20-24 yr. old in this county with a GED. It just doesn't happen to anyone elses kids. Really it doesn't. Money passed hands, and these kids got great jobs that are unheard of in this day. Legally he may have done nothing wrong, but isn't funny how all these people with money and power, never have to start at the bottom, like the girl above who got her GED, then went on to become a nurse. Her parents didn't get her that job, she worked hard to get there. A GED is not a bad thing, but you can't get a job in a high clearance security level on just a GED. My brother joined the Navy when he was 18 years old. He left school early and got his GED so he could do so. He was granted a high level security clearance to work on nuclear submarines when he joined. So tell me again how 18 year olds with GED's aren't granted high level clearances? Oh, and before you say it, intel and defense agencies grant clearances in the same fashion as military branches. Therefore, an 18 year old with a GED could get one just as easily from them. As a matter of fact, it would be easier to give one to them because there is less to investigate.
