St. Pete pork in the budget
Magically, the Legislature found $2.5 million to complete the total $7.5 million in full funding to create the C.W. Bill Young Government Institute at St. Petersburg College.
The college got the first $5 million for its funding last year and the earmark was among projects spared when Gov. Charlie Crist vetoed a half a million in member projects last year. Young, himself, had lobbied for this institute, which the Times wrote about last year.
The issue appears to have surfaced during conference negotiations, as there's no record of the project going into budget negotiations.

GREAT! Now… all I have to do is head north on CW Bill Young Rd, turn west on CW Bill Young Dr., go over the CW Bill Young bridge, pass the CW Bill Young trail, turn east on CW Bill Young Ave, go pass the CW Bill Home for Homeless Veterans… ooops… scratch that one… I mean go pass the third government building or park named after CW Bill Young… and stop at the C.W. Bill Young Government Institute at St. Petersburg College.
Is that where I can get a BS in Narcissistic Behavior?

Looks like a Young has got a heck of a job in their future.

I wonder if the legislators can find some "magic money" and a little compassion for the abused children of Florida? If these cuts go through, we should all be ashamed.
Republican Women Urge Legislators to Continue Funding for Abused Children
The Florida Federation of Republican Women today announced their stance against the proposed $50 million dollar cut in the budget for Florida’s abused children. The group called for all Floridians to unite behind the issue.
“As our most helpless citizens, these children are entrusted to our collective care and have no one to speak on their behalf. As stewards for good government, we have a responsibility to be a voice for Florida’s abused children and advocate that they have every opportunity our tax dollars can provide. We hope all concerned citizens will join us in this effort. Ironically, April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Florida’s children deserve to be safe and cared for,” said Linda Ivell, President of the FFRW.
The proposed $13.8 million dollar cut in adoption assistance and $19 million dollars in to services are coupled with a proposal to completely cut off funding to 18-year-old high school students, forcing them from their foster homes prior to graduation.
“This is not a partisan issue yet, we belong to the party whose members often advocate for pro-life issues. I cannot imagine a more pro-life stance than advocating for state funding for living children who have been abused or abandoned by their parents. As Floridians, foster children are our collective responsibility,” said Ivell. “We respectfully implore our legislators to find the much needed budget cuts elsewhere.”

St. Pete Times:
It is so obvious what your motives are. You should be ashamed that you keep taking cheap shots at Young? why? what has he done to you? Wherever you got your erroneous information about the naming of the Government Institute At St. Pete College is wrong. There is no intention of naming that Institution after Mr. Young and you are intentionally, once again, attempting to make the readers believe something you cannot prove. Shame on you. Your integrity as an honest journalistic vehicle is definitely heading downhill. Just as you intentionally tried to mislead the readers about Youngs sons making 6 figures when both started at entry level salaries.
How do I know the Institute isn't going to be named after Young? I work at the college and I have integrity.

3:39p.m.:
Congtressman Young has supported the St. Pete Junior College and now St. Pete College thruogh his entire career. Yet you want to attempt to shame him for supporting furthering education to the people of Pinellas? What is your problem? they should name the whole college after Young. What have you done for the college, moron? or for furthering the education of our future leaders? Your just jealous and you suck.
Posted by: | April 30, 2008 at 10:20 PM
Hey Jennifer Liberto:
How long have you been around? Young supports everything and everyone in Pinellas county? Where did you get your education? I bet he had his hand in that school also. Maybe you should be thanking him for helping to further your education.

I'm with 10:17 : Times, you should have proof of the statements you make on these blogs before you try to sway "the ignorant" readers that have no mind of their own. Why don't you tell us what a great guy Reverand Wright is while your entertaining us.

This is interesting because there is no Bill Young Drive, Bill young Road, Bill Young Avenue, Bill Young bridge or Bill young trail. Yes he did get the money for many of those projects, but they aren't name after him. Get a life, jealousy and lies will make you sick.

Susan Smith of the Hillsborough County Executive Committee - Reverand Wright likes your style. maybe you should take your show on the road with him.
Posted by: | April 30, 2008 at 10:31 PM
Let's have some more information before we label this "pork." On the surface, it sounds like money for education, which is pretty hard to come by right now.
I mean if a Rep. goes to Tallahasee or DC to represent his constituents, does every approval vote qualify as "pork" for him? Isn't that his job?
SPT, please tell us:
Did it pass on it's own merits, or was it tacked on to an un-related bill?
Does it benefit primarily a special interest, or the constituency as a whole?
If not, is the primary beneficiary (SPC) a big campaign contributor to Mr. Young?
I'm a DEM, so I'd be the first to criticize Young if it's true, but I think we need some clarification here.
Posted by: | April 30, 2008 at 10:38 PM
The money for the Institute was in the Governors Budget Request, not Youngs. that is at a state level . St. Pete college doesn't contribute to political campaigns nor does the University of Florida, the University of South Florida or Florida State University or any other collegs that Young has supported. His campaign contributions are public record.
I am a democrat also, and am disgusted that the Times would print this garbage without verification. I will call the college myself in the morning and verify this, as we can't seem to trust the integrity of our newspaper anymore.

10:30 pm: Your oops is way off, again susan or gene. There is a Home for Homeless Vets. It sits right in the VA at Bay Pines. Young had his hand in that also. How do I know? I volunteer at the VA with these homeless vets to try to help them get back on their feet. You obviously don't care about the vets or you would put your hostility into volunteer work and help them yourself, and if you are too lazy to do that, throw some of that money you have laying around at a vet.

We think you need to be talking to dear Charlie about this issue. this is his baby. but you will have to pull him away from a photo op or cocktail party first.

Hey susan:
Young has said he agrees that Florida Democrats should not be disenfranchised at their national convention in Denver this summer. Better have another drink to help you find a snide remark over this one.

Ok Young boys, get to work. Our taxes bought you those jobs, the least you can do is work 'em!

Continually creative, aren't we? Who bought you your job? My taxes pay for your food stamps and welfare, get off of your butt and get a job. Don't say you have a real job, because if you did, you wouldn't be blogging.
Posted by: | May 01, 2008 at 09:56 AM
8:26 aka Susan Smith of the Hillsborough County democratic executive committee. Shouldn't you be getting to work yourself, trying to buy your way into Obama's failing campaign? Put your energy there. Also, Hillary thinks your a disgrace to the party but then again, she only got her info from your co-workers.
Posted by: | May 01, 2008 at 09:58 AM
There's only so many lows Obama would go to, and one is Susan. He wouldn't take her money, the good ole preacher has brought him enough embarrassment, he doesn't need her incoherrent babbling.

If by chance this is the Young boys, they are pretty good at what they do.

8:26 - MY taxes would be happy to pay for your Anger Management Classes.
By the way, I am assuming you are an adult, or should be, and it amazes me that you can't focus on anything but hatred and jealousies for the Young boys. do you know them? have they personally done something to offend you? Please share with us. they have a right to work, and we know that they both started at a pay scale on entry level, yet you keep saying "you bought their jobs". Well then, you didn't buy them very profitable jobs. They are someones children, they are not in politics nor did they choose their fathers profession, but yet you feel so compelled to attack them. I am quite sure that most of us that want to be able to express ourselves on this post feel embarrassed by your constant harrassment of the young men who have nothing to do with you or your animosities towards them. Have you no shame? Is it Barak Obamas childrens fault that their father is associated with An American who hates America? Is it Obamas childrens fault that their mother is embarred by America? what About Chelsea - shouldn't you be attacking her. she makes 6 figures for a Hedge Fund and her mother is heavy into the stock market as well as a Senator. Is it Chelseas fault her father publicly called a young woman a liar years ago? Of course not, your personal beef is with Young and he won't give you the time of day, so you attack his kids. I would pretty much bet those Young men wouldn't give you the time of day either, and just chuckle over your stupid, repetitive comments regarding them.
and as for the SP Times, who monitor this blog, shame on you also. I am sure many of you have children and wouldn't want your children blamed because you have no journalistic integrity. that is not the fault of your children.
Posted by: | May 01, 2008 at 10:43 AM
Hello out there! anyone consider the "thought" that maybe, just maybe one of the journalists are making those comments? they are the ones that printed the story omitting the entry level pay scale. Hello - wonder why they forgot that? convenience - it sells papers. affecting young adults lives are not considerations.

I would agree Young has done some excellent things in his tenure. But this state money to SPC ( not Young's doing) is a pork deal no matter how you cut it.
No, SPC does not give political donations - they just put every Republican connected individual they can find on their board of trustees. Karl Kuttler flies to Europe on the Vice president's plane at tax payer expense and no one can deny there are existing - well run - well respected government institutes available throughout the state already.
Agreed Young should not take the hit for this pork - but Crist and Kuttler sure should!
Posted by: | May 01, 2008 at 04:48 PM
No Kuttler DIDN'T fly to Europe on the Vice Presidents plane at taxpayers expense. Check his expenditures -- he paid for it. Once again, must be SP Times staff comments. It's their ink.
Posted by: | May 01, 2008 at 10:46 PM
the Times built the blog, comments on the blog, harrasses on the blog and sits back laughing at what this world has come to. compliments of bad journalism. At least the Tampa Tribune has class. The "report inappropriate comments" would put the Times out of business. Kind of twisted, don't you think? I'll change to the Trib. Honest journalism at it's best.
