Webster gives his farewell

Webstergeller

Florida Senators Daniel Webster (left), R-Winter Garden, Majority Leader, and Steven Geller, D-Hallandale Beach, both will be leaving the Senate. Scott Keeler | Times

After 28 years in the Legislature, term-limited Sen. Dan Webster gave his farewell this afternoon.  A strong social conservative with a genial tact, Webster, 59,of Winter Garden, became the first Republican House Speaker in more than a century in 1996.

The Senate agreed to name the Florida's Turnpike headquarters at the Turkey Lake service center for Webster, following an amendment by Minority Steve Geller, who also is departing. The House named a meeting room after him this week.

It got so rich that Sen. Bill Posey suggested the "lawmaker of the millenium" would be Webster. That was before Sen. Stephen Wise gave him an accolade for every letter in Webster's name.

Webster made no mention of his political future, but Sen. Jim King suggested Congress or the Orange County mayor's office will be the beneficiary.

Saying he had three don'ts -- "sorry Sen. King," shall we say a more active member -- and and three do's, Webster advised:

"Don't go to Clyde's. Don't make it personal. Don't burn any bridges. ... Do rise early. Do read the Bible. Do serve others."

Apparently he hasn't read that pesky little verse that says, "And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done [it] unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done [it] unto me."

He has certainly harmed children, the elderly, the handicapped, and the homeless.

He has certainly worked hard to change the middle class into the working poor - and boy howdy, has he been sucessful!

Dont let the door hit you on the way out!!. Its great that these wing-nut wacko types are leaving Tallahassee. Hope he packs up and moves to Mississippi where he can try to pass his STUPID abortion legislation. Its great the it FAILED and thats the message these idiots get when they depart. GOOD RIDDANCE!

Signed
A REPUBLICAN

buh bye Daniel...good riddance!

The people above obviously dont know Danny Webster. That is a good and decent man.
Spare us your blog entries and head to DailyKos to jack each other off.

3:40 - for all those like you who think religion should stay out of government, you sure like quoting the bible to justify your favorite government program - woops, shame on me for implying liberals are intellectually dishonest

Thanks for unsucessfully trying to push your world view and morals on the rest of us.

Maybe now, instead of trying to "save" everyone through governmental intervention, Mr. Webster can spend his time volunteering at a soup kitchen, raising money for the needy, and mentoring an underprivileged child.

WWJD

I remember when I first started working in Tallahassee, I was told about how honorable the Senator was. Then I watched as Senator Webster lied to my face on more than one occasion, and his staff would do the exact same thing and worse. Let's hope that in the future we elect people who not only talk the talk but walk the walk.

Another repub happy to see Webster term limited.

Yes, 4:03 he lied to me on more than one occasion.

Superficially seemed like a nice guy, but in terms of trying to shove his religious views down the throats of the infidels, he had more in common with the Taliban than with the average guy from Tampa. Good riddance.

oh, didn't know rev. jeremiah wright (4:17) blogged on here

I heard Webster already has a new job lined up as Vice President of Governmental Relations at CSX.
He starts Monday.

So long as Geller goes you can take anyone else you want with you. Talk about a nasty individual not to mention his propensity for religious bigotry. His references to legislation gaining amendments as loading up the bill like Christmas Trees always struck me as disrespectful given that he represented himself as a Jew.

Hers another Republican that Webster has lied too. He is not what he used to be, but then maybe he was never the saint they paint him to be. He lies. I also agree that he had no problem taking money away from the most needy for the CSX deal. That was so bad and he facilitated it. Bad way to leave the legislature. Glad your government intrusion died on the floor also. Time to go.

meant "Here's"...

4:00 - I know "Danny" and I am a Republican. It is time for him to go...in fact, he should have left 8 years ago.
