Obama coming to Tampa Bay
Details to come, but Barack Obama is set to do some kind of public campaign event in Tampa Bay on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 21.
Coming the day after he's likely to win a majority of elected delegates in Oregon and Kentucky (and a potentially logical day for Hillary Clinton to exit), Obama's Tampa Bay stop is is part of a three-day campaign swing through Florida. It's the first time since August that the Illinois senator has been willing do campaign in Florida outside of private fundraisers.

Officially, nothing has been set in stone.

Posted by: Ted | May 12, 2008 at 10:57 AM
All right. I'm looking forward to the candidate that plays by the rules and talks to Americans in more than 10 second sound bites. Lets put an adult back in charge and give our children a president to look up to. Hillary is a good senator and should get back to work on the Hill.
Go Obama!

It would be disgusting just to think about Barack Obama or Jeremiah Wright setting foot inside the White House.
NO FRIGGIN WAY I WILL EVER, EVER VOTE FOR OBAMA!
My vote goes to McCain. If he wins, Hillary likely would re-run in 2012.

Barack Obama's type of change will set race relations in America back 30 years.

Senator Obama will be in Florida for fundraisers on May 21st and 22nd in Orlando and Miami. Nothing has been confirmed about a Tampa visit. This is a rumor going around but we have nothing to confirm whether or not he will stop by Tampa.
Posted by: Megan Foster | May 12, 2008 at 11:45 AM
For those of us who seek a rational, thoughtful, intelligent debate on the issues that face our nation and the world, I welcome Senator Barack Obama to Tampa and to Florida.
For those of you who blame the Senator for ‘turning his back on us’, your blame is misplaced. It was the State Party and the State legislators - - - Democrats as well as Republicans - - - who broke the rules that had been established for the 2008 presidential primaries.
Let’s listen to what both our presumptive nominees have to say and then decide who should lead us through the next four/eight years. Personally, I see many ways that we can use our tax dollars to feed the hungry, initiate innovative ideas to improve our children’s education, maintain our infrastructure, and save our failing healthcare system. I do not want to see our economy bankrupted over what has become a civil war in Iraq. …But, that’s just a personal opinion.

Who the heck cares if Obama is coming to Florida. This is the deep South country & we could care less about that elitist.

I've been a fan of Obama since his speech at the Democratic convention and voted for him in the Florida primary. I'll be glad to finally see him in person. This white/low income/latte liberal (yes, we do exist) plans on finally getting off her rear and doing something to help get Obama elected and turn this country around.
Stop the drama, vote Obama!

WOW what a bunch of totally uninformed voters. First of all Obama is far from an elitist. He grew up in Kansas on and off food stamps. He put himself thru college on student loans and has nowhere the net worth of McBush or Hillary. McCain the son of a HIGH ranking Military father and multi-millionaire, and Hillary who is worth over 100 mil are the true elitist. Google Pastor Hagee & McCain. Oh by the way Rev Wright was at the White House, a guest of the Clintons. Get the facts before you make yourself look like a fool.

I doubt you are a repub, not because you said would vote for obama- but because, I am not sure a repub would vote for him...well, a left leaning repub would, but we have that in McCain
But more to the point of my issue...
racist Dems-
I found this in an article- "Josh Fry, a 24-year-old ambulance driver from Williamson, insisted he was not racist but said he would feel more comfortable with Mr McCain, the 71-year-old Vietnam war hero, in the White House. “I want someone who is a full-blooded American as president,” he said."

Okay, once again...the members of Florida's leadership turned their backs on us. Barack Obama merely followed the rules that all the candidates agreed to follow. I know it's a novel idea in politics - playing by the rules - but it's just one of the reasons he's got my vote. Hillary says Obama doesn't want a solution? BS. She's the one who rejected a plan in Michigan (you know, that place his name was not even on the ballot) that would have shifted only FIVE delegates from her column. Tell me again who doesn't want a solution? The only solution Hillary will except is the solution that gives her an overwhelming majority of the delegates in both Florida and Michigan...silly rules and fair-play be damned.
As a side note, when I planted arugula in my garden this year - the one I planted not only as a fun project, but a money-saving step due to the exorbitant cost of EVERYTHING - I had no idea it would brand me elitist. So be it.

Reiterating Megan's comment from a couple of hours ago:
Senator Obama will be in Florida for fundraisers on May 21st and 22nd in Orlando and Miami. Nothing has been confirmed about a Tampa visit. This is a rumor going around but we have nothing to confirm whether or not he will stop by Tampa.
Secondly, two major themes in this comment thread:
1. Obama "turned his back" on FL in January.
2. blah blah...black..blah blah... blah...elitist..blah blah...redneck talking points...blah.
1. Obama did not turn his back on this state; he operated within the parameters of the DNC rules. In effect, this state's Democratic party broke the rules and was penalized. HRC only cared about FL (and MI) when it became politically expedient (and necessary). But all of this is neither here nor there: Obama will be our nominee and the time for this bickering has past. We need to coalesce, unite, and win this election.
2. It's 2008, guys. I am confounded by all the bigotry and racism in this comments thread. And still yammering on about Rev. Wright is just thinly veiled pretext for your own racial prejudices. Any uneasiness about that simply isn't borne out by the facts. Get over it. Join the rest of here in Not-a-Redneck-Racist-Land. It's nice here.

Sure - Obama played by the rules and that's why he will be beaten in November. He is a very beatable, easy target for all the smearing that the Republicans will do.
Hillary and Bill know how to smear the Republicans back and play their own game and they could beat McCain.
I also think they could win in a 3 way vs. Obama and McCain. Hillary ought to drop out of the party if they do not count FL/MI and run as a 3rd party. Her & Bill coan find the 270 electoral votes.
If the party counted thge deligates the same proportional way the electoral college counts votes - Hillary would already be the nominee. But the Dems count Guam more then FL/MI so they will lose again.

funny johnny that you mentioned Rev Wright, didn't oprah go to the same chruch for a few years in the 80s? Yeah, she left because she felt that the tone of the church, well- this is what newsweek said -
"tone of Wright's more incendiary sermons, which she knew had the power to damage her standing as America's favorite daytime talk-show host. "Oprah is a businesswoman, first and foremost," said one longtime friend, who requested anonymity when discussing Winfrey's personal sentiments. "She's always been aware that her audience is very mainstream, and doing anything to offend them just wouldn't be smart."
Funny, she knew in the 80's that it was smart to distance herself from that racist...but it took Obama 20 years to realize it, and he wants to be President?????

Re: Rob - May 12, 2008 at 12:43 PM
Get your facts straight: Born to a Kenyan father and an American mother, he spent most of his childhood and adolescent years in Honolulu, Hawaii.
At age six, he moved to Jakarta, where he lived with his mother and Indonesian stepfather for four years. After her divorce, Dunham married Lolo Soetoro, and the family moved to Soetoro's home country of Indonesia in 1967, where Obama attended local schools in Jakarta until he was ten years old. He then returned to Honolulu to live with his mother's family while attending Punahou School from the fifth grade until his graduation in 1979.
[Note: Punahou is private, co-educational, nonsectarian college preparatory school located in Honolulu in the U.S. State of Hawaii. Tuition is $16,675 for the 2008-2009 school year, not including optional and mandatory fees. Tuition charges do not cover the entire cost of the education of a student, and this "deficit" is met by the school's endowment.]
A graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, Obama worked as a community organizer, university lecturer, and lawyer before serving in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004.
So much for he grew up on food stamps - honey, his background is more privileged than Hillary's. You're being sold a bill of goods and like the uniformed consumer you are - you are buying it hook, line, and sinker!!!!

That may be the worst type of elitists, those that grew up poor & made it bid and now snub his nose at the hard working middle class people in rural America.
America wants a President that understands the people, not one that looks down on them with starch shirts & GQ suits asking “Anybody gone into Whole Foods lately and see what they charge for arugula?” “I mean, they’re charging a lot of money for this stuff.”

The past years have been been hell for most us us but most Pres. do not start terms under conditions Bush did. All of these candidates we have to choose from will not change anything I can not wait until 2012 when we hopefully have a better selection. As for Obama acting like Mr. Smith going to Washington, where he comes from, Chicago is on of the most corrupt cities in the USA and the dems have groomed him and his wife to run this country. It does not bother me he is black it bothers me he acts like he is above the rest of all the politician's which is not true. As for Wright, it is his judgement, his wife's comments when you listen to her responses it all comes down to ME...ME...ME... not us as a country. Remember Hillary supporters if Obama gets the nomination, WE VOTE FOR JOHN MCAIN!
If Obama loses in Nov., she can re-run in 4 years and could win big.
(After June 6th, no matter how much Hillary says he supports Obama, WE STILL VOTE FOR MCCAIN! She has no choice but to say she support Obama)

The year that democrats could take the White House in a big way & we get a crap candidate like Brack Obama.
I will vote for John McCain in November. He is a bona-fide true American hero that has compassion(look at what they did for the 2 children the brought back from Bangladesh & got adopted)
Not a bad person to see in the White House in my opinion. While this was happening, Obama was marching with the Black Panters in Washinton D.C. in the Million Man March.
Go McCain.

**Terrorist-group HAMAS supports Obama’s foreign-policy vision and hopes he wins:
“We don’t mind–actually we like Mr. Obama. We hope he will (win) the election and I do believe he is like John Kennedy, great man with great principle, and he has a vision to change America to make it in a position to lead the world community but not with domination and arrogance,” Yousef said in response to a question about the group’s willingness to meet with either of the Democratic presidential candidates.

I'm truly surpised all you people admit to supporting McCain. He supports all Bush's failed policies; so I guess your reasoning to conitinue these policies makes sense?
Lets get smart and support a leader with intelligence who can make logical decisions for our country. Also, please stop listening to Rush, Hannity, and these other clowns.
Vote OBAMA

I'm really glad to see all you wingnuts throwing all your "ist" charges - racist- Marxist, elitist at Obama. I'm glad because the RNCC just tried that in the special House election in Louisiana, in a seat held by Republicans for 33 years - and lost.
So while you carry on with all this foolishness, Barack Obama is going to be talking about tax cuts for the middle class (paid for by rolling back the Bush / McCain tax cuts for the rich - which most of us aren't), providing health care for all Americans, an energy policy that reduces our dependence on foreign oil and creates innovation based jobs here at home, and oh yes, ending the occupation in Iraq so that we can refocus on the real war against the terrorists who actually attacked us and who are still in the Afghan / Pakistan border region.
President Barack Obama - has a pretty good ring to it. You guys better get used to it.

Keep drinking the Obama kool aid Gene. I didn't realize you were one of those socialists. But I bet you also think Jimmy Carter was a great President. You have something against rich folks? Maybe you should get off your lazy a.. and go out and earn some money the way many people doing better than you have. Envy and no motivation seem to be hallmarks of the Obama backers. Take from those who do well and give it to the slackers like you. Obama will get creamed in November!

Wait until Obama's affair with an intern is finally broken by the media and then it will hit the fan. They are doing to Obama exactly what many thought they would. Build him up and then tear him down with all the information they have been sitting on. This ain't gonna be pretty.

Obama’s major weakness to be taken advantage of by the Republicans is his absolutely retrograde economic policies.
Raising taxes in the midst of an economic slowdown and abandoning the U.S. commitment to a system of more open trade (a system of which the U.S. has been the number one beneficiary for the past 50 years) would be an absolute disaster for the future growth and job creation opportunities of the U.S. economy.
McCain should make advocacy of low tax rates, free trade and economic growth and Obama’s opposition to all three the centerpiece of a winning campaign. McCain does not need Rev. Wright et al to defeat Obama. Obama’s socialist and archaic approach to our economy is enough to give McCain the edge....at least with me and several other conservative Democrats.

Dems for Mac,
Agreed on most of your points. However, much of the economic slowdown has been caused by massive debts that have in turn weaked the US dollar. If McCain is truly committed to economic recovery via tax cuts, he must also pledge to rein in government spending as well. Treasury announced today that the federal government is at it's largest number...ever.
Since McCain is committed to war spending, committeed to tax cuts - where is it he plans to cut? Or will he cut at all?
Also - what is his view on Bernanke's job, success/failure? Would McCain be open to a Fed Chair who has the guts to raise interest rates, which is what helped stabilize us in the 80's.

Since 1916, no Democrat has ever been elected President without winning West Virginia. Tonight, Hillary Clinton has destroyed Barak Obama there! If the Dems want to win the Presidency, we must nominate Clinton. Obama is just not electable. She is the only Democrat who can beat John McCain.

It will be a blowout for John McCane if Obama gets the nomination. He can't wing the swing states.
You heard it here first.

I'm in Tampa and would love to go and show my support. Just wish someone would announce the time and place. Obama will crush McSame in the general.

Do you believe everything you see posted by random strangers on the internet? His Bush tax figures appear accurate enough (except you don't pay taxes on what you "make"...you pay taxes on your "taxable income," and we all receive at least a personal deduction.) His Obama figures, however, are pulled from thin air. Instead of making such a momentous decision based on a post by a stranger on a message board, why don't you research it yourself? This is a perfect example of the reason we're in this mess today...that's where blind faith in every negative, fear-mongering, sound-bite we hear gets us...
