Traviesa steps into education role

4356_4 As the Rubio era transitions to the Sansom reign, there is growing speculation over who will land leadership positions. Two are pretty clear:

Rep. Adam Hasner of Delray Beach will remain as Majority Leader. And Rep. Trey Traviesa of Tampa will take over as education chief. Traviesa was at Rep. Joe Pickens' side this week as Pickens struggled to explain the House education budget was not a property tax increase, rather a "fund shift." Traviesa, 38, got an undergraduate degree from FSU and an MBA from the University of Texas. Sansom is also toying with the idea of splitting policy and budget, going back to the old system.

its a tax increase.

Yep, it is a "fund shift" alright - from the homeowner's personal fund to the government - otherwise called a TAX!!!!!!!!!

it is an increase and a decrease at the same time, resulting in less overall money collected.

Hopefully, after all the Republican Leadership has done this session, Sansom will be the next Minority Leader of the House!!!!

We need to END WELFARE!!! $700 MILLION TO CSX, $110 MILLION FOR AN AIRPORT FOR ST. JOE PAPER COMPANY, $12 MILLION FOR A ROAD FOR ST. JOE PAPER COMPANY!!

We just can't afford these jokers anymore!!!!!

Increasing the LRE is not wholly a tax increase. It means school districts must provide that X number of funds. How they do so is left up to them - they may or may not have to raise taxes to do it.

HOWEVER, the state mandating LRE increases is an unfunded mandate.

Pickens is right, though he is parsing words. He will never admit to it being an unfunded mandate, but has certainly made it easier to point the blame at local school districts who do rely on a tax increase - one caused by his actions, albeit indirectly.

It's a win win for the Legislature politically - despite it also being extremely hypocritical.

Hey 2:31, quit crying (must be a Dem) and actually read. The CSX amendment got pulled. Maybe we can use that money to pay for some crack babies or to put some knocked up inner city teens through community college?

Quit being so naive 3:39 - CSX isn't dead yet.

3:39 th eonly teens reported being knicked up are "white" texas cult girls and Britney Spreas "white" teen sister. Looks like the welfare support should be focussed on the "white" suburban community.

Say it ain't so!!!

Treviesa is a far right wing Republican.
Pickens while loyal to the speaker was much more moderate.
This isn't good news for Florida public schools.
Treviesa has little real world experience with Florida public education K-12 and falls easily into the "Jeb clone" category.
Been there done that.
The Senate led by Gaetz will become the more progressive public education body.

2:44 oh yes, I understand - the state cut their funding so the school boards don't have to raise school board taxes to replace the funds - no indeed, they'll just go to the money tree out in the school yard and pick the money leaves from the branches!!!!!

Your contenpt for the taxpayer is just breathtaking!!!!!

Remember their contempt for the average person this November and vote accordingly!

I can't believe Traviesa can stop looking at himself in the mirror long enough to get any work done. That guy loves himself.

I see plenty of knocked up black welfare recipients. Just go walk around FAMU or TCC's campus...

When you get your TRIM notice, it will reflect that the Legislatively mandated RLE will be increased while the Legisaltively allowed local property capital outlay tax will be reduced. This reflects less local control and greater state required taxes. It IS a tax increase no matter how THEY want to spin it.

Steppin right into the pile of do-do left by Jeb.
