Hometown Democracy sues to get on ballot
Florida Hometown Democracy has filed a federal lawsuit in the Southern District of Florida seeking the "proper certification of ballot status for the Hometown Democracy constitutional amendment."
They're seeking to get on the November 2008 ballot through an injunction. The group says they've collected more than 820,000 signatures.

so hometown democracy is trying to bypass the democratic way (petitions) and using the republic form (checks and balances) to get on the ballot, does anyone else see the humor of this one?

Lesley Blackner is suing somebody? Are you serious? That's so out of character...

Hometown Democracy: "Power to the People!"*
* Except when we disagree with the people, or the people somehow derail our radical agenda. In these instances, "Power to the Courts!"

820,000 signatures is a lot of "power to the people". I hear some panicky builders and realtors on this blogs, I think.

Chris W, if you read their complaint, I think you'll find some desperate, yet highly litigious, extremists trying to save face. I'd call it a Hail Mary, but I'm sure that would offend their Wiccan Goddesses.

Its funny Hometown Democracy is the common ground between Republicans and Dmeocrats, they both hate it.

Not everyone hates Hometown Democracy. Some of us hate realtors and developers quite a bit, though.

The lawsuit essentially contends that HD didn't meet the legal deadline for verified signatures, and now their panties are in a wad, and it is the duty of courts to ignore the law when people are unhappy.
Classic anti-democratic liberalism.

Maybe the Supreme Court should ignore the law and step in to stop their lawsuit. There is a precedent for it, although illegal.

If Hometown Democracy is so off the wall then why has the Chamber of Commerce crowd expended so much effort and gold to derail it?
The legislature changed the rules in midstream and took a lot of Democracy out of the equation. Since when should your vote or petition not count because a clerk got so many they couldn't count them all by a deadline?
Good for Hometown Democracy not to lay over and pipe down. There are a lot of us "electors" out here that have had enough of the political pay off crowd.

If you want to see Hometown Democracy in action, take a looks at the mess Hometown Democracy's front group (CRG) has made of the political process in St Pete Beach = stagnation!!!

The realtors and developers were able to marshall their supporters to this blog very quickly...bravo!
Bottom line is this is the clock is ticking on your windown of opportunity to shake down the people of Florida. Hometown Democracy will be on the ballot in 2010, if not 2008. If it gets on, it passes easily. Because we are tired of being abused. Please go back to New England and enjoy your yacht. We don't want you here.

I cannot believe the detractors writing in opposition to Fla Hometown Democracy. What a display of ignorance! None of these people have researched the legalities of what happened to FHD and they stand there making uninformed judgments. How unfortunate that they speak from ignorance.
John F. Kennedy once said "The ignorance of one voter in a democracy impairs the security of all".
Please do some homework people before you rant and scream about something you have not researched.
You people who lack knowledge and shoot from the hip deserve $5/gallon gas and all the rest including the two Patriot Acts which are anything but what they claim by name. Go research those and stop attacking those who fight for your freedom.
I guess we take freedom for granted in this country. Only hardship and oppression that affects you directly gets your attention. How unfortunate.
