There's no real doubt Saddam would have restarted his weapons programs as soon as he got the sanctions off his neck, and the UN sanctions, already riddled with corruption, were falling apart. The Duelfer and Kay reports also made clear that Iraq was loaded to the gills with conventional weaponry and a lot of this, unsecured in the aftermath of the invasion and defeat of fascist Ba'athist regime, was looted and fueled the insurgency.

The only thing funnier than watching McCain's speech in front of the green screen (he kept switching back and forth between teleprompters like a human lawn sprinkler, and you could see him think "Okay, this is where I have to smile" on more than one occasion) is listening to the McCain trolls (aka Bush leftovers) try and pretend that Hussein was more than a regional threat. WMDs? He really *didn't* have anything to hit us with, and what he did have was left over from the 1980's and decaying and which *we* gave him so he could keep Iran in check. (Nice bit of geopolitical bumbling, btw - Iran isn't preoccupied with fighting off Hussein anymore, so they can concentrate on their wider Middle Eastern ambitions.)

Every intelligence agency in the world, including Saddam's own generals, thought he had the weapons...when it was apparent that the US was going to invade, the generals wanted to know where they were, so that they could prepare for war...i can only imagine their great let down, when Saddam told them there were none.
