Vice President Bill Nelson
US News & World Report: "...Another possibility being discussed on the Democratic circuit is Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida, a steady, popular leader who could give Obama a big lift in the Sunshine State. Nelson isn't an exciting campaigner, but he is probably a safe choice who would do no harm to Obama's prospects, which in the end could be a key consideration."
[Chris Zuppa, Times files]

Senator Nelson would be a safe pick for Obama, but I don't believe he is powerful enough to put FL in the Blue column.

And McCain better not pick Charlie as Vice!
Posted by: | June 27, 2008 at 01:59 PM
Oh you mean the same idiot Bill Nelson that wants to undo the part of the Founders' brilliance that is the Electoral College to let the mindless whims of the masses decide the President?
Yes please pick him so the rest of the country can see what an absolute idiot he is...let's put his idiocy on display for all of America.
Please...that would be all that would be needed to guarantee a McCain victory.
Obama, PLEASE put Nelson on the ticket!

Good Lord, 2:04... you are an idiot. Do you lemmings even know what you're saying anymore... are you that frightened by the black man... or is that just when you folks are in pblic restrooms with a twenty in you hand?
Posted by: | June 27, 2008 at 02:19 PM
2:19-
No, like Madison, Jefferson and the other Founders, I am frightened by majority/mob rule because there are far too many idiots like you.
Posted by: | June 27, 2008 at 02:25 PM
A popular leader? If that guy didn't skeeze himself a spot on the Shuttle, no one would even know who the hell he is.
Posted by: | June 27, 2008 at 02:40 PM
2:25 And I'm apalled at the current rule of the corporations. The founding fathers were equally afraid of political dominance by a few wealthy men. I doubt they were able to anticipate the disaster that has come about when some fascist fool gave citizenship rights to mindless, selfish, irresponsible business contrivances called corporations. And before you blather your tired old line about this being a Republic - republics require a cadre of well-intentioned, well educated leaders who will represent the will of the people. Bush, Cheney, and any other so called leader put forth by the corporatist conservative machine is as far from that ideas as it is possible to be.
Posted by: | June 27, 2008 at 02:44 PM
Although I like Senator Bill Nelson a lot, he would not be the VP candidate to draw significantly more votes within Florida or elsewhere.
Posted by: | June 27, 2008 at 02:51 PM
Nelson is an idiot. A repug in Democrat's clothing.
Posted by: Barb | June 27, 2008 at 02:59 PM
Corporations are made up of people and provide most of the jobs that are the engine of the economy. Government needs to get out of the way to allow them to work properly.
Where do you work? The government? Not that there is necessarily anything wrong with that, except for the fact that you suck off the taxpayers' teat. You don't produce anything or service that anyone really needs or wants.
Not sure what you are talking about regarding "citizenship rights" to corporations...they can be made up of citizens, but not sure where you are going with this...
Anyway, we ARE a Republic (why is this a bad word?) and they don't require any of the sort of qualities you speak of...it would be nice, but the idea is that if you don't like what your leaders do, you can vote them out.
But we as a nation gave Bush 8 years. I know it sticks in your craw and you never got over the 2000 election, but it's really time to "move on".
Posted by: | June 27, 2008 at 03:00 PM
3:00 pm: WELL SAID!!
Posted by: Disgusted Republican | June 27, 2008 at 03:23 PM
"But we as a nation gave Bush 8 years."
And we'll be paying for that mistake for decades to come... over and above the thousands who have already died for corporate profit and daddy's revenge.
I can smell the fear in you malleable minion republicon dopes...
It's time for you pinheads to move on so we can fix the damage your ignorance and greed has caused this great nation.

He's been on the moon for Godssake, he can do anything!!
Posted by: LP | June 27, 2008 at 04:19 PM
To begin with, 4:19, Nelson has never been to the moon. Period. Secondly, Nelson would be a perfect VP candidate. He is a moderate, he is well spoken, not charasmatic enough to overshadow Obama (but then who is?), and he will help in Florida as much as any VP candidate helps in thier home state.
I think Nelson would be Obama's best pick possible!
Posted by: Bryan | June 27, 2008 at 04:26 PM
Gad! Some of you people are either stew-pid or so blinded by your own propaganda that you can't see for having your head up your bum....
Nelson is not a bad guy, personally, but the pejorative term, "empty suit" describes him magnificently...
That he wants to abolish the Electoral College is an attempt to prevent the actions of folks who would bend the the E.C. for their own will, like Tom Feeney....
The problem with our form of government are the hacks who populate the political parties...
Wake up people.

“Not that there is necessarily anything wrong with that, except for the fact that you suck off the taxpayers' teat. You don't produce anything or service that anyone really needs or wants.”
One Civil Servant, pay just as much toward the tax roles as anyone else. They are the ones rushing to a fire, deal with the carnage of carless drivers, or driving to a blocked creek during a torrential downpour. Civil Servants are the people that keep the streets clear for traffic, sewers, water and gas flowing, they keep the rain from washing away your home. They connect you to the police, hell they are the police, the fire and paramedics. Most citizens don’t know what to do when the traffic lights go out, or what to do during a hurricane. They call the Citizens Information Center which is manned during all Civil Emergencies from the moment of a declaration until the emergency has passed. Some Civil Servants have to put down the unwanted animals on 40 hour a week schedule, let’s see you do that. Some have to climb in sanitary sewers full of waste, or wade in alligator infested waters to collect data. These are just a few of the many thankless functions that are rendered by Civil Servants while they suck off the taxpayer’s Brest.
Oh, hell I guess you are right they don’t produce anything or service that anyone needs or wants.

if the st pete times wants to do more than a lip service endorsement of the oo train of obamanation racism they should stop putting something stupid he does or says in the paper EVERY DAY.
It's very transparent.
Mccain will pick charles-in-charge and we'll just see how the stpete times continues to subtly trash obamanation.
Love a john edwards fan.

America loving Cubans remember well that Fidel Castro was not a communist either when he was up in the Sierra Madres with Che Guevera. The Cuban people who accepted Castro as their rock star hero soon ended up dead, in prisons, or fleeing the country. Check out Obama, his associates, his background and his wife Michelle. He is another Fidel Castro. Don't believe for a minute that it can't happen here. But Che was a helluva lot smarter than empty suit Nelson.

As the space ship got close to the moon, Nelson bent over to buckle his moon boots. Unfortunately, the unanticipated power of the moon's gravity sucked Nelon's brains right out of his butt.
Posted by: | June 27, 2008 at 05:44 PM
I am neither, but I see you like pointing out other people’s weakness. That’s right I can’t read or write its called dyslexia, you are so superior.
I was just pointing out that the person that taught you how to read was a Civil Servant. A small percentage of our society, takes on the challenge of keeping the lights on and the watch running for the rest of us. How do you get to work every day, by osmoses, or do you use the street like the rest of us? Do you have to dispose of your own bodily waste, or do you flush and forget it? Why doesn’t that big dude down the street come over and take everything you own? Start asking yourself some serious questions smart guy the answers might be humbling.
Posted by: Aquaserpent | June 27, 2008 at 06:15 PM
I don't believe Bill Nelson is a good pick. Obama needs a candidate that can deliver some states like Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania.
Having said that, I think McCain is the second coming of Bob Dole. He appears to be losing his grip on what is going on. So I think as long as Obama doesn't sink himself with his words and action, which is very possible, he should be able to win.
If I am Obama I would debate John McCain and look at a politician from one of the states listed above that is a moderate. Obama is too far left, he needs to set that off a little.
Posted by: Eric | June 27, 2008 at 09:29 PM
Okay, I'll bite.
When I 'dispose of my bodily waste,' it goes into a septic tank, not a central sewage treatment plant manned by union goons. And, as far as that big dude down the street, I'd prefer to handle that myself rather than rely on my friendly neighborhood morbidly obese cop.
My only interaction with firemen is when they stick their empty boots in my face at stoplights, begging for change. The only interaction I have with cops is when they hand me speeding tickets between their doughnut breaks.
Get off your high horse, Danno. It's bad enough that I pay your salary with my taxes. Don't insult me by trying convince me it's money well spent.

He had the worst plastic surgery I have ever seen. He should sue the pants off the doctor that messed his face up.

Do you think if we peel off his face we would find either Tammy faye or Jimmy Hoffa?

It would be generous to say we were stunned," says a Republican House Judiciary Member, describing his response when Congressman and Obama Superdelegate William Delahunt (MA-10) yesterday asked the vice president's chief of staff David Addington about water boarding of terrorists. Addington declined to comment, citing President Bush's refusal to discuss techniques used to attain vital intelligence, and added that another reason not to respond was that Al Qaeda is probably watching.
Congressman Delahunt's response: "I'm glad they finally have a chance to see you." (Emphasis added.)
But the House Republican and Judiciary member was not so stunned to notice that no Republican rose to defend Addington, or to call out Delahunt for essentially inviting al Qaeda to impart physical harm to a senior member of the Bush Administration. "It was shameful that we didn't do anything. I can't explain it," says the GOP member.
Just as shameful, according to a Democrat Judiciary staffer: Delahunt was congratulated for "zinging" Addington after the hearing. "Zinging was the term used. These guys are tired of the same old lines and excuses. I mean how many times can they pull out that old bogeyman of al Qaeda. The American people aren't buying it anymore, and certainly Delahunt doesn't."

Obama would be stupid to pick Nelson for one simple reason - Charlie Crist would get to pick his replacement:
100.161 Filling vacancy of United States Senators.--Should a vacancy happen in the representation of this state in the Senate of the United States, the Governor shall issue a writ of election to fill such vacancy at the next general election; and the Governor may make a temporary appointment until the vacancy is filled by election.
(from the Florida Statutes)
Somehow, I think the Obama people know this and aren't going to take one D out of the Senate and put an R in when we have an outside shot at making Joe Lieberman inconsequential.

I could careless who NOBAMA picks for VP. I'm a Hillary supporter that's going to vote for John McCain!
Posted by: Robert Hartung | June 28, 2008 at 12:59 AM
NObama will probably pick someone for for VP today and 48 hours later will change his mind and pick another VP candidate!
Obama = Most liberal = Socialist = Failed Carter presidency
Professional panderer and hates being questioned....
Flip flops recently:
Private financing after railing against private interests
2nd Amendment flip-flop
Will consider nuclear now after railing against it
"I'll meet with anybody...even those we consider terrorists. Well, not anybody - just the guy that's just the figurehead of the terrorist country". (Iran)
NAFTA flip flop after giving HRC a hard time on her position
"Rev Wright is a long-time advisor of mine." "He's not an advisor, he's a close-friend." "Rev Wright is...well, my grandmother... I distance myself from Rev. Wright."
"I'll stay at the church."
"Oh, I resign from that church."
"It's time for unity and bi-partisanship"...
Really? Obama got the most liberal record for 2007 and were among the most liberal senators the other 2 years. He doesn't reach across party aisles, doesn't keep his word, and doesn't have a clue on oil, energy, foreign policy, economics, and more...
Obama>Carter in setting the nation back.

Bill Nelson? Are you freaking kidding me?
Posted by: | June 28, 2008 at 08:24 AM
Well spoken? Ever listen to this guy speak? His cadence is so slow he would never get through two questions in a debate without the moderator dozing off. Between Obama's three step speech cadence and this guys slower than a turtle speech pattern the whole country would not need any sleep aids anymore. Those who claim Obama is a great speaker really need to listen to him. Between his one...two...three...one...two...three..cadence and his left look, right look metronome...geeeez. I knew Reagan and this guy is no Reagan!

Barry doesn't need a VP. He's the chosen one - meaning he, alone, is the answer. Did Jesus need a Vice Christ? Did Alexander need a Vice Emperor? Did Genghis need a Vice Khan? Even Hitler didn't have a VP. So enought talk about Barry's VP. He doesn't need one to turn the country down the Socialist path to greatness!
Posted by: Donald Lance | June 28, 2008 at 08:55 AM
Write this down. In the tradition of Winnie Mandela, Hillary Clinton and Eva Peron - Obama is going to name Michelle Obama as his VP and run as a twofer. She has everything required of a VP - plus succession. The perfect storm: black, left wing female from a major state. Just think, what this country will be after 16 years of Obama rule. Rubble.
Posted by: | June 28, 2008 at 10:46 AM
Nelson is such a cautious and inert politicians he makes McCain seem youthful and vigorous. As VP he'd be a Dr. Scholl's pad in Obama's Ferragamo.
Posted by: Rockabilly | June 28, 2008 at 12:12 PM
Quick, look at a picture of Nelson and then look away. Now describe him...bet you can't. He is transparent and so is his philosopy, with a policy depth about as deep as the Rio Grande.
Posted by: | June 28, 2008 at 05:21 PM
The only reason Nelson was reelected to the Senate, is because our other given choice was Katherine "Cruella" Harris. I'm a democrat and that was a hard choice.
Fla dems are hurting over so many issues, the last thing you need to suck the last of the air out of those left who will work, it to stop considering Bill "the shill" Nelson for VP, even for a second. Nelson? No vote, period!!

Lovenguth says links to Florida Dept of Stare - Division of Elections http://election.dos.state.fl.us/candidate/CanList.asp show active candidates for 2010 Florida United States Senate of which he is one. Please visit: http://www.ElectGeorgeAnthonyLovenguthFloridaSenate2010.org Lovenguth links to open government conservative Democrat who advocates for disabled residents disabled veterans who need to have their primary home property tax placed on par with the current Florida law which allows all 100% military service connected disabled veterans. Seeks to sponsor an admendment which will provide every service connected military disabled veteran a reduction equivalent to their Department of Defense or VA rating. This will encourage out of state disabled veterans to move into Florida as well, off setting the many people now leaving Florida at a record pace. Dis abled veterans living in Florida are not seeking employment and the compensation they and their familes receive will more then offset the property tax reduction ad a wholer number. Lovenguth has been working to stop the destruction of the 300 + mile St. Johns River basin and is seeking concenus on keeping the Florida youth educational reading programs intact as Lovenguth beleives that reading is the common denominator of learning. This need not be cut from the educational budget. Lovenguth may be biased here in that he has his degree in English with a specialty in literature, he beleives reading is everything when many others want to cut that program. How do you feel about the Florida educational reading programs? Lovenguth has a writing contest taking place at Scribes Cafe .com A coffee shop he and his wife own which serves 90% vegetarian food called Heartworks Cafe in Historic 5 Points Riverside, Jacksonville, Florida 32204.
