Detert brings out big guns in Senate race
Things have not been looking good for Nancy Detert's bid for state Senate District 23. Last month, U.S. Rep. Connie Mack and Gov. Charlie Crist endorsed Rep. Michael Grant over Detert.
"People were confused with the Charlie Crist thing," Detert said Monday. "They asked, 'Does that mean he doesn't like you?' "
But Detert may have just one-upped Grant as the Republican primary nears. Today, at a well attended rally in Osprey, she scored the backing of Sen. Lisa Carlton, who currently holds the seat, as well as Senate President Ken Pruitt and Rep. Bill Galvano. (the trio wrote this letter.)
"Lisa really helps seal the deal," Detert told the Buzz. "It sends a message to the community that's who she wants to replace her." Noting that she assumed Carlton's House seat years ago, Detert added: "I am considered the natural replacement. I intend to fill Lisa's high heels."

I want to know Nancy's position on property taxes before I say if I want her in the Senate.

The Republican boys never really support their Republican woman. They only back the tken Republican women who are willing to follow and ask no questions. Glad she got a supporter, just sorry its a token R woman.
Nancy, you just work hard to get elected because the Senate is in need of many more women who will question everything the bad boys do.

10:38 She could not be worse then whats there now.
Posted by: | July 14, 2008 at 10:40 PM
Please - Enough with the RINO Republicans. Detert Go home! Nobody cares who Lisa Carlton and Ken Priuitt endorse anyway. How is that "one upping" Grant?
Posted by: | July 14, 2008 at 10:43 PM
"Could not be worse than who is their now" is a real ringing endorsement isn't it. For the Buzz that qualifies as a stronger endorsement than Connie Mack and Charlie Crist. Typical St. Pete Times blog BS.

10:43 Grant has been endorsed by some because he has pledged to support Atwater and Haridopeolis for Senate President. Its all politics and not about who is the best candidate. Grant will have to drink the Kool Aid. Atwater and Haridopeolis are two of the most plastic people you ever want to know.
Posted by: | July 14, 2008 at 10:53 PM
10:47 Still better than the boy the corrupt political hacks want to get elected. What else can I say
Posted by: | July 14, 2008 at 11:02 PM
Nancy, I like you but please get a up to date picture.
Posted by: | July 14, 2008 at 11:04 PM
Interestingly enough, there could be a pending restraining order for somebody that tried to fill Lisa's high heels.
Posted by: | July 14, 2008 at 11:06 PM
Nancy is going to win this race... not because of these endorsements, but because she is a long standing resident and well liked former elected official from Sarasota County. Grant is an unknow from Charlotte County. More than 80% of the vote is in Sarasota County.
Posted by: | July 14, 2008 at 11:19 PM
11:19 - She's a RINO. She'll lose.
Posted by: | July 14, 2008 at 11:22 PM
Don't bet against Nancy she has run in Sarasota county for years. Grant is from the wrong part of the district.
Posted by: | July 14, 2008 at 11:29 PM
Grant is the rino... new positions on every issue... kind of like another Massachusetts former moderate who is now a right wing conservative... the voters didn't believe him either.
Posted by: | July 14, 2008 at 11:35 PM
Seriously, that picture was either taken 30 years ago or photoshopped by a pro. The R's need to watch their step in this race. The Dem's have a surprisingly good candidate in Morgan Bentley. If the Detert/Grant race gets ugly, the R's just might lose this seat.

I am sure the picture was not supplied by the campaign (at least not the one this year). My guess is that this old pic was the only one the Times had on hand to run with the story.

Little Connie is a carpetbagger who left his District in Fort Lauderdale high and dry and without representation when he first ran for Conmgress on the west coast. And then proceeded to firmly ensconce himself up that little crook DeLay's b_tt. Anything he recommends - vote against it.
And as for Charlie Crist's recommendations ... dropping like a rock!

Nancy Deter is a winner. She will be a good Senator.
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 08:41 AM
Detert is the one who pledged to Haridopolos. Funny that he didn't endorse her. Why would voters in the area really care who Ken Pruitt (not in the district) and Lisa Carlton (termed out) pick? Don't voters have the right to pick who represents them? Since when do outgoing politicians and those in other areas of the state "pick" who they want to win? This party involvement is getting ridiculous. Let the voters decide.

No one even knows Lisa in Sarasota. She hasn't been on the ballot not one time for the state senate, and the last time she was on a ballot at all had to be more than 10 years ago.
I'll take a sitting governor over a lame-duck state senator any day of the week.
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 08:47 AM
Who is DWE endorsing?
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 08:49 AM
A previous entry should read as follows: The Republican boys never really support their Republican woman **(Republicans in Tallahassee elected a woman Senate President for 4 years and two woman Speaker pro tempore's and a Lt Governor) They only back the token Republican women who are willing to follow and ask no questions. **(False! Republican women have had major leadership positions in both houses and as Dept. heads in Florida Government.) Glad she got a supporter, just sorry its a token R woman. **(Sen. Carlton was never a token whatever. She follows in her mothers footsteps as a leader.)
Nancy, you just work hard to get elected because the Senate is in need of many more women who will question everything the bad boys do. **(The bad boys in Tallahassee are the tax and spend without accountablility Demoncrats. Nancy will surely vote often with them as she is a moderate Republican at best.)

The R boys just don't like woman. They call any one they can't control a RHINO. Honestly, that is getting real old.
They hated Evelyn Lynn (until she went over to the dark side) and they still call her all kinds of names, Dockery, Argenziano, Storms, and the only other R woman there is is Carlton and they dont say anything to her face, but then again she just does what she is told. Now Detert. Say what you want about the Dems, at least they respect their women.
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 08:54 AM
8:49 You are so very wrong. Lisa, that you? Republican men treat the women like they in their way. The R women are not usually corrupt and they make no bones about it. The men don't want these pesky lil women to get in the way of "business as usual". Have you ever read the papers? Read the blogs when a R woman is being trashed, over and over again? They are treated like annoyances. You, do not know what you are talking about.

8:46 ..."Detert is the ine who pledged to Haridopolis"... In your dreams Hari!
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 09:00 AM
Nancy Detert is a RINO, votes RINO, and always gets the endorsements in the primary elections of the left wing news media (who always support their Democrats in the general election).
A vote for Detert is a vote for RINO.

Let’s talk about who is on who’s team. Grant supports Bennett who is tied to all the liberals in the Senate and who in his own twisted logic is rooting for Atwater to lose because he thinks that gives him a chance to be Senate President. Detert supports the conservative team of Atwater and Haridopolis.
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 09:29 AM
WOW! Bennett is rooting for a Dem to knock off Atwater! I guess I see it, but if that is true I believe the cavalry will be riding in to carry Detert to victory.
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 09:34 AM
Haridopolous won't be an issue in two years...
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 09:58 AM
9:58 = Sen. Bennett
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 10:11 AM
Mayfield will be beat Haridopolous in 2010....but the D's will probably take control of the Senate in the Election anyways. Won't make much difference.
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 10:47 AM
Mayfield will be Agriculture Commissioner
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 11:33 AM
Sen. Bennett better start recognizing Haridopolos as his senior before it's too late and he ends up with no committee asighnments. Haridopolos has been in the proses longer and is an expert on government and taxes. Sen. Bennett is neither.
Posted by: Gene | July 15, 2008 at 01:36 PM
Gaetz doesn't much like him either. Bennett has never been in leadership so he should just learn to follow orders and be a good soldier.
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 01:39 PM
1:39=Gaetz
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 01:44 PM
Hmmm, Detert gets backed by HAS BEENS and Grant gets backed by people that are actually still making laws and have some name recognition in the entire district. Go ask a Charlotte voter who the hell Pruitt or Carlton is...I can bet you they have no clue. Carlton hasn't stepped a "high heel" into Charlotte County ever. She hasn't done a minute of campaign work in Sarasota in over 10 yrs, so her endorsement means her daddy and friends vote for Nancy? Sorry guys, this one doesn't really amount to much! Just Detert crying to her buddy John McKay to fix things for her. She is a RINO!
Furthermore...no one reads the Buzz but the RPOF kids and Dem kids.
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 01:50 PM
Everyone knows Pruitt. He is the KING maker. He picked King, Lee, Atwater, Haridopolos, Gaetz, and now Detert. I would say that is impressive.
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 02:06 PM
2;06pm-Everyone WHERE? In Tallahassee? Your post clearly shows that you are one of the RPOF kids. Do a poll in any township in Florida to see if they have ever heard of Pruitt...tell me what you find. Go back to work doing something other than blogging.

From the letter: “Congressman Vern Buchanan, four Republican Sarasota County Commissioners, the Mayor of Sarasota, Sarasota Clerk of the Court, two former State Senators from Sarasota, and present and past Venice City Council Members.” and now the incumbent Senator she is running to replace. The point is Nancy is very popular in the district and has an overwhelming amount of support from local leaders.
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 06:02 PM
Pruitt backs winners? Yeah, getting the Senate to back Richard Corcoran just two years ago was a stroke of genious! I wonder if Senator Dean still believes that!
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 10:00 PM
Detert is an old battleaxe - that pic has got to be 30 years old - that smoke-crusted skin in two inches thick and the color of tobacco - she's got the backing of a has been Senate Prez and the lame duck Senator Carlton - wow, that's just a landslide.
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 10:02 PM
Bennett better get with the Haridopolis program. He needs to know his place, and that is under President Haridopolis. I hear he is telling people he has the votes to knock Haridopolis out. That is not going to happen. If Bennett doesn't want his office to be on the lower level he better get with the plan. I hear Haridopolis is going to make Bennett Vice Chair of the Ag committee.
Posted by: | July 15, 2008 at 10:31 PM
10:31 You don't get it. The incoming leadership does not want Bennett in any key positions. He will just be one of the followers. Pruitt was and is supporting Atwater and Haridopolis and Bennett was to unaware to know that. He has no leadership place and he is treading on thin ice trying to take out Haridopolis.
