Rubio breaks out the tweed sportcoat
Marco Rubio is adding professor to his burgeoning resume.
The Miami Republican and outgoing House Speaker will begin teaching a course on state politics and elections this fall at Florida International University. Rubio has also just started a stint as visiting scholar at the school's Metropolitan Center, a think tank headed up by friend Dario Moreno.
"I'm very excited. It's a good opportunity to interact with people, get the perspective of young students," the 37-year-old Rubio tells the Buzz. Rubio went to the University of Florida for undergrad and got a law degree from the University of Miami in 1996.
(see the jump for his views on the latest Seminole Tribe gambling development)
Rubio said he respects the governor's right to ask the state Supreme Court for a re-hearing on the Seminole Tribe gambling compact. But he said the whole issue could have been avoided if Crist had brought the deal to the Legislature.
"If they would have offered that from the beginning , we wouldn't be here right now. We'd have an operative compact that is fair to the people of Florida and fair to the Seminole Tribe."
Rubio does not think the Legislature will get a crack at negotiating a new deal (one he said should be limited to slots only, not card games) this year, due to the complexity of the issue and upcoming elections.

Yep and he wanted to give $700 million to CSX and did give $410 million for a sports stadium, cut teachers, and cut child abuse investigators, nursing home inspectors, foster car workingers, and services to severely mentally and physically handicapped.
He cut $$$ for universities, but apparently NOT for his new teaching position. I bet he's not making "base."
Remember in November - all the Republicans are interested in is feathering their own nests!

Professor Ha Ha Ha Ha that is so freakin hilarious.

I give you credit 8:04. You have so little to do in life you can monitor this blog 24/7 to put up your tripe at lightspeed.
Good work, my friend, good work.

8:04 is like many Democrats. A non-productive member of society who lives with his computer and welfare check and doesn't want either compromised by those nasty Republicans!
Posted by: | July 18, 2008 at 09:21 PM
we all know they set themselves up in the budget for jobs when they leave, the smart ones do it two years out so it is not so apparent.
but why are we not discussing how the house majority is going to lose numerous seats because of the money they spend on a family trip to europe and not races
Posted by: | July 18, 2008 at 09:22 PM
Marco Rubio cut funding to FIU and now he is getting a job at the same university that has had to get rid of professors?
Posted by: | July 18, 2008 at 09:25 PM
Rubio is such a nobody that it really doesn't matter. However, it is pretty funny he is relegated to "teaching" at some third rate "university". One step above those online universities.
Posted by: | July 18, 2008 at 09:26 PM
I hope Marco Rubio gives a lecture on how he backstabbed Gaston Cantens so that he could be speaker instead of Cantens.
Posted by: | July 18, 2008 at 09:35 PM
I want to hear the lecture on raising tolls on the turnpike so that he can give his friend Max Alvarez 60 million dollars.
Posted by: taxpayer | July 18, 2008 at 09:38 PM
Who is Max Alvarez?
Posted by: Jen | July 18, 2008 at 09:39 PM
This is a great example of public service at its best. I wish I had had the benefit of a state House Speaker teaching a course when I was in college. What a wealth of information on state politics Marco Rubio will be! Great guy all around!

I thought people went to school to be educated, not to be made ignorant?
Posted by: Kool-Aid 101 | July 18, 2008 at 10:34 PM
Marco's making over $300K per year.
He should teach the course pro-bono.
Posted by: terminator | July 18, 2008 at 11:15 PM
Maybe he should teach Max Alvarez a course on how to hire lobbyists that aren't horribly bad.
Posted by: | July 18, 2008 at 11:29 PM
9:26 if he is so irrelevant then why are you up on a friday night blogging about him?
As for Max Alvarez all he was going to get is a chance to bid. Crist's veto just gave the contract to one vendor who I am sure gave him lots of $$.
And fake terminator who posted at 11:15, Marco makes $300K because he went to school and got a degree. Isn,t that the way it is supposed to work. You go to school, work hard get a degree and then make good money?
As far as I know, Marco does not have a trust fund or rich parents. He has earned everything he has, including the Speakership. If someone has proof that Marco kept Cantens from getting the Speakership, would you please post the evidence.
THANKS

A more relevant question is "Why is Marco Rubio up on a Firday night posting self-serving comments on the Buzz at 11:35 PM?"

If Rubio is teachg just one course at FIU, then he is only an adjunct professor, making maybe $3000 a semester. This isn't a full time gig, and its no big deal. The students will benefit greatly from his first-hand experience in politics, unlike the leftwing tenured professors who have never had a job in politics!
Posted by: jaguar | July 19, 2008 at 09:41 AM
Rubio is someone I just can't stand. I am certainly not jealous or envious. I am not a politician, nor a lobbyist. I just have happened to watch him over the last 8 years and he and his evil little minions disgust me. They are like little thugs who shake kids down on the playground for their lunch money. He didn't win his speakership, he beat up the smaller kids for it.
Disliking someone because they are not honorable is way different than being jealous. But, that is what you all always fall back on. Whatever.

why do you assume I am "fake terminator"?
I'm not and don't have anything against Marco making $300K, I'm just saying since he's financially able and the universities are struggling with their budgets, he should do it pro-bono.
Not to mention, it would look real nice to voters and taxpayers, would fulfill his pro-bono requirements as set forth by the bar and maybe even inspire many prospective students with the noble idea of service to one's community.
Although I think JFK was a lousy president, his immortal "Ask not what you can do for your country" resonates here.

I heard he was teaching a course on "Machiavellian Politics: How to Become a Self-Serving, Napoleonic Autocrat."
In the spring term, he will teach a course on "How To Be An Ineffective Leader."
Posted by: | July 19, 2008 at 11:48 AM
I suspect that Marco will make a fine adjunct professor and wish him well.
But for term limits, Marco would not have been Speaker when he was. But for his lack of experience, Marco would not have made many of the mistakes that he did. That said, Marco is a bright, social conservative with an ambitious nature, I suspect that he will soon return to the political arena.
Posted by: zenator | July 19, 2008 at 12:42 PM
Marco will have a tough time winning a seat in the state senate in 2 years. Robaina is going to give him a hell of a fight. He is very popular in South Miami.
I'm not saying Marco has no shot...only that his ambitions are disconnected from reality. Marco sees himself as governor when it's not clear that he has enough local support to be a state senator.

while not disagreeing with your assessment, what argument could you make for the many mistakes Charlie Crist has made?

The difference between the reactionary, inexperienced romper room former Speaker and the Governor is like comparing Little League to the Major Leagues. Rubio has failed because he is fake...he preached about the "process" and then ruled like a dictator.
Posted by: | July 19, 2008 at 05:01 PM
I thought cushy do-nothing university jobs were the exclusive domain of Democrat public officials. Messrs. Askew and Graham, please take note.
It's sort of embarrassing for a young Republican to stake out his claim on a portion of the public trough. At this point in his life he should be taking risk and creating jobs; you know the stuff we Republicans blather on about all the time.
But, this isn't the first disappointing performance by the young Rubio. He had a perfect opportunity to distinguish himself as the conservative alternative in the Republican Party, and yet squandered his natural gifts on a completely unremarkable tenure as Speaker. He didn't control the House, didn't execute on his clever Hundred Ideas, and generally displayed a lack of discipline and maturity that will consign him to footnote status in Florida political history. And now, with this university post, he seals his fate.
Marco, we hardly knew ye. And maybe that's a good thing.
Posted by: e tu marco? | July 19, 2008 at 05:08 PM
You are all crazy. I bet you the next speaker already set himself up in the budget with a job. Did Okaloosa Community College create a program for him to land in?
With term limits they are all going to do it.

Termie:
When Crist took office in January of 2007, he inherited a mess--a tax crisis, an insurance crisis, a real estate crisis and an economy going into recission, which is projected to last through 2009.
Please advise me as to what major mistakes you beleive that Crist has made over the course of the past 18 months? Was it a mistake to cut state taxes by $8 billion dollars? What about passing Amendment 1 to reduce local property taxes, another mistake?
Posted by: zenator | July 19, 2008 at 06:03 PM
zenator, you are not on topic. Put the bottle away.

You must be talking about the "fantasy league" or maybe fantasy fest if you're intimating Charlie Crist is a big leaguer! I mean, I know he was a hack lawyer for minor league baseball in St. Pete but are you for real dude? You obviously must not be living in Floriduh!
Zenator:
While I'm sure Charlie's governorship is paying handsome dividends let's get down to brass tacks as they say.
While true Crist did offer up the tepid tax cut known as amendment one, I don't think it has "kick started" the economy like he predicted.
And contrary to anything you say, property taxes didn't "drop like a rock" like Chuck promised.
Secondly, as you well know, he's made a total mess of the insurance market but let's not even go there.
Thirdly, while promising to "hold schools harmless" Chuck did anything but cutting school budgets by a billion and passing along an increase in local taxes through the RLE. He also signed a voucher bill tripling the size of the corporate scholarship voucher program in the wake of a massive recession.
The US Sugar deal stinks as bad as the polluted muck the state will be buying for $10K an acre if Chuck gets his way.
And expanding gambling when he called himself a "Jeb Bush Republican" is no way to grow your economy unless you plan on becoming Atlantic City or Vegas. And negotiating the Seminole compact by yourself and in direct violation of the Florida Constitution wasn't exactly the wisest thing to do.
Should I keep on going?
To add insult to injury, Chuck spits in Floridians eyes by spending a quarter of a million galavanging all over Europe with his faux girlfriend fiancee meeting with people like Prince Charles when he should be back in his office in Tallahassee conducting the state's business as he promised to do when he took the oath of office.
You know the state that is sinking back into the ocean because it's economy is dead and Chuck has no real solutions?
Man a lot of us hated Jeb but that guy sure as hell worked!
Posted by: | July 19, 2008 at 08:11 PM
8:11 your analysis is flawed from beginning to end....just admit it...if Crist developed a cure for cancer you would find fault with it...the economic condition today is not isolated to Florida and certainly cannot be blamed on Crist....
Posted by: | July 19, 2008 at 08:20 PM

Rep. Marco Rubio, is history. He left with the restrooms on the gallery level not accessible to people in wheelchairs.
Many House Members, housed in the floors above the fifth floor in the capitol also do not have restrooms for people in wheelchairs. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has been asked repeatedly to file suit against all the Tallahassee State Buildings with same and similar barriers. DOJ does not have a history of filing suits against republican strong holds in state government. Rep. Rubio just passed the unaccessible restrooms onto the next Speaker of the House. See the Capitol Report at www.dignity4disabled.com. Rep. Rubio and the Speaker of the House has had the report for years.

Hey Termie, at least zenator is no one-trick pony. He's a voice of sanity that's getting harder and harder to find amid all the juvenile name-calling and chiche-tossing.
And to cynical: had I to do it over again, I would run for office myself, and try real hard to win. Sure, there's be a couple years of inconveniences, but worth it in the end!
Posted by: | July 20, 2008 at 11:02 AM
Terminator...you hatred for Crist is well known which makes you incapable of any objective analysis of his performance in office. He has, in fact, cut taxes more than any Governor in history and controlled spending with a significant number of vetoes. What no one could anticipate was a national meltdown of the housing market teamed with the sub-prime issue that has caused all investment capital to disappear. If the world of finance was the same today as it existed when the tax cut/portability was inacted it may very well have had an even greater positive impact on the economy. What has not been widely reported has been the increase in housing sales over the last few months. You can usually see this information in the Business Section of your local paper, but not the front page. Things are already turning around. As for property insurance, rates have come down but what isn't widely reported is how much more they would have gone up if it weren't for the efforts of Crist. In addition, 30 new companies are in Florida writing insurance as a result of reforms he pushed through. Your arguments about the US Sugar deal and gambling are so weak they don't deserve a retort. The most important thing the Governor can do at this time is promote the State for economic development and growth purposes...and he is doing just that. Spending 250k on a trip that will result in new jobs and millions in revenue to Florida is a very good investment of time and money. As for education, he proposed education funding increases...and has always demonstrated a commitment to education. You can continue to try and rewrite history if you want...but there are many of us who know the facts.

I bet Ray Sansom fixes it. I'm serious, not joking. He has a very different perspective than Rubio, Crist and some others in T-Town.

Wow amazing to me that people have nothings better to do on a weekend then comment about the Speaker becoming a professor. Pretty pathetic.
Posted by: | July 20, 2008 at 09:27 PM
Rush,
you sound like one of Chuck's press office staffers.
I'll be watching closely over the course of the next year as to how much business/how many jobs were created from Crist's summer vacation (gratis of Florida taxpayers).
While not blaming everything on Crist, the man lacks the remotest semblance of any policy solutions to ease Floridians economic suffering.
Spending half his time chumming around with McCain and the other half on trips here and there that aren't even remotely associated with the problems facing Floridians won't do much to impress "the people".
I remember back in 2004 when Jeb actually didn't attend the GOP National Convention because it was hurricane season and he felt a duty to be in the state representing Floridians just in case. That's the kind of leadership Charlie Crist has never exhibited.
As far as the insurance issue and no retort, I think we all know the position we're currently in due to Chuck's insurance policies. I just hope the big one doesn't blow your double wide away out there in Seffner!
And if you have any kids attending public schools this year I can tell you their teachers aren't going to be happy campers!

Hey, did terminator called out Marco by saying that he shouldn't charge for teaching at FIU? Is there trouble in paradise?
Posted by: | July 21, 2008 at 10:18 AM
This is a pretty long blog trail for such an insignificant person?
What are you guys so scared of?
I thought Rubio was the only one in the Capitol over the last two years who had any connection with reality.
His age is always a factor (hence the inexperience stuff) but he handled alot of controversial stuff that came his way ( Arza, Bob Allen, two deaths) I thought in pretty good way.
His only failure was that he reached for the stars and fell shot through no fault of his own. If he had just played along and had modest goals he would have been termed a success? but then that is what is wrong with politics. It is better to try only modest things so that you dont fall short. but then nothing ever gets solved.
Rubio is not perfect. But the people who blog on here are what we call haters. People with nothing better to do than hide behind a screen and attack other people. Almost everyone who posts on this is a lobbyist or staffer. In essence insiders.
Get ahold of yourself.

the blog is the greatest thing that has happened to communication in the past twenty-five years (at least from the advent of the internet)for the average person.
it's the epitomy of free speech. What are you so afraid of?
I loved former President Harry Truman because he used to give everyone "hell".
One of his most famous axioms was "if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen"!
Ps Marco is generally an admirable guy but he should teach the class for free. It's not like he needs the money and just imagine the amount of positive pub he'd get by doing so.
