Florida under state of emergency

FayGov. Charlie Crist issued a state of emergency on Saturday afternoon in the wake of impending Tropical Storm Fay. Buzz wonders if this could be the governor's first statewide declaration of a state of emergency, given hurricanes have spared Florida for so long.

Comments

Scary. Could a hurricane have a worst path for Florida?!

good luck and god bless!!

Scarier than Charlie as Governor??

It's a tropical storm. No big deal. We used to have these all the time in Florida and they were never big news. Now the news stations make them big stories and try to get everyone freaked out about them. Cat 3-5 hurricane is something to worry about, not a tropical storm.

What a Fa__oT

5:28, you ought to know that once the storm crosses Cuba and hits the Straits, the warm SST's have the potential of sparking a big intensity jump. Models are forecasting Cat 1 winds of up to 80+ if it landfalls on the Fla. west coast. My own opinion is that the model tracks are too far east and this will be a panhandle storm. If so, the longer over water, the stronger it would get, up to Cat 2 or even 3. Watch for where it crosses Cuba...if the center goes east of Havana, the west coast of the peninsula is in the firing line. If west of Havana, I think the panhandle solution will make more sense.

If you really want to know more about what might happen, go to storm2k.org or flhurricane.com and look at what the professional and knowledgable amateur mets are saying. Don't let the TV news idiots get you in a panic...find out for yourself what is really happening.

Finally, an opportunity for a meaningful Republican response.

Time to position Jim Greer in the middle Keys and and instruct him to blow the storm into the next hemishphere.

5:28 is a raging MORON!!!!

A tropical storm is still dangerous you idiot. People still die and most important to our state is the fact that ANY STORM COULD BANKRUPT THE BUDGET!

5:42, You are are tad smarter but still pretty dumb. Forget those sites and go to the proper source at www.nhc.noaa.gov/. That is the Hurrican Center and you will find an accurate 3-day forecast that shows the greatest probability of landfall around the Sarasota area. Anybody reading this: DO NOT GO BY THE STRAIGHT LINE!! FOLLOW THE CONE!! If you live in the area of the cone, DO NOT TAKE A TROPICAL STORM LIGHTLY!!

Buy water (not too much), fill your car with gas. Buy gas for generators. Fill up your freezer with ice (Home-made). Make sure you have non-perrishable food and cooking supplies to last at least 4 days without electricity. Plan on boarding or shuttering at least your South-Facing windows (North ones may not be necessary). Trim any large trees. See if you can still get your power company to come out and trim anything near the power lines (DON"T DO THIS YOURSELF!!)

Lastly, the strongest possiblity of death is from people who go outside after a reletively weak storm and get electrocuted by fallen powerlines or other hazzards. As long as you are prepared to ride it out inside you house for several days, you will be safe and fine.

let's blame trey traviesa

now that Chuck isn't going to get the VP nod and news of his "engagement" to Ms. Rome is old news, this is Chuck Crist's way of trying to stay "relevant".

Poor Chuck, what's he going to do now?
Stuck as the Captain of the SS Florida Titanic, a job he never really wanted and is in way over his head, not going to get the VP nod and stuck in an engagement he really didn't want either with his real love pining away back home in SP at Dad's house living on the boat in the back yard while Chuck only comes to visit once in awhile.

Let us not forget.Florida needs that sales tax. COuld be Charlie's saving grace. And the PR pictures to boot. You all know what this smells of.....

yeah, 11:36, lol -- big boost in sales tax !

State employees - just before and during the hurricane when the memo comes around asking you to "volunteer" to work for free to man the various emergency centers - DON'T!!!!

When the Governor's office send the memo begging that you donate money and supplies - DON'T!!!

For over 8 years the Governor's office (both Jeb and Crist)and the Legislature has viewed you as lazy, inept, and with contempt - they have effectively cut your salaries by not keeping up with the cost of living. And, they are planning on more lay-offs after re-organizational session!!!!

The Governor and members of the Legislature just got back from a state-paid trip to Europe staying in $1,800 per night rooms!

The Legislators just got back from out of state week-long conferences at YOUR expense.

The Governor withheld 4% of the agencies' budgets but HIS travel budget is not impacted!!!

Agencies have laid off essential personnel but NOT those former members who now have plum jobs at top pay for which they DON'T qualify!!!

Florida State employees are the least paid in the nation. Per capita Florida is in the bottom 5 of number of state employees per population - Florida already does it all on the cheap and wants you to give even more - just so the politicians can have a sound bite!!!

So, when the memo comes - give a silent but effective NO!

Humm - well state employee - Remember in November!!! Otherwise it won't change!!!

Don't worry! Barack will cause the skies to open up and save us from the dangers of Mother Nature. Now if he can't quit studdering when giving an answer, he as POTUS, will be worse than anything Mother Nature could throw at this nation.

Gee, Charlie, you must be getting desperate for sound bytes to declare a state of emergency for a Tropical Storm in Cuba.

George Bush needs to be re-elected for another term.

Watch for signs of weather modification between now and landfall.

Hey 6:10, hope you stocked up on lots and lots of batteries and water for this horrible storm!
